Toshiba and SanDisk to Reallocate NAND Memory Production
Toshiba today announced that Toshiba and SanDisk have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding on the reallocation of wafer output and equipment ownership and funding at their two joint ventures producing NAND flash memory on 300 millimeter (mm) wafers at Toshiba’s Yokkaichi Operations in Japan, in response to a proposal from SanDisk. The move is designed to enhance the production flexibility of NAND flash memory in line with the rapidly changing marketplace and to optimize each company’s business strategies.
Fab 3 and Fab 4 at Toshiba’s Yokkaichi Operations are currently operated by Flash Partners, Ltd. and Flash Alliance, Ltd., the production joint ventures between Toshiba and SanDisk. Investment in the manufacturing equipment installed at the two fabs is equally shared by Toshiba and SanDisk through the JVs, with the same capacity allocated to each company. The revised allocation will make Toshiba the sole owner of some 30% of the total capacity. The remaining about 70% will still be owned by the JVs, and the production capacity allocated to the JVs will be divided equally between Toshiba and SanDisk. As a result, Toshiba’s overall allocation of capacity in the two fabs will increase by about 30%. By expanding its production capacity efficiently, Toshiba aims to increase sales of NAND flash memories.

AMD Co-Founder, Ed Turney Dies
Ed Turney, one of the eight founders of semiconductor-industry giant Advanced Micro Devices, died yesterday at the age of 79. Brain cancer was the cause, said his brother, George. His years at AMD, which ultimately became a major force in the semiconductor industry and industry-leader Intel’s major competitor, were the zenith in the high-low career of Edwin James Turney.
Known as “Fast Eddie,” Turney’s initial assignments at the fledgling AMD involved buying equipment and overseeing construction of the company’s first chip factory. At the same time, as director of sales, Turney was charged with building a sales organization, including developing a network of electronic distributors – a vital step in enabling the company to compete with established companies such as Intel, Fairchild, National Semiconductor, Texas Instruments, Motorola and other companies that no longer exist.

NVIDIA GeForce 9300 Launch Roundup from Motherboards.org and other reviews from around the web can be found by visiting our forums!
In terms of overall graphics performance, the GeForce 9300 is in a class by itself on the Intel side of things. While the G45 struggles to maintain any kind of playable frame rates in the games that I tried and crashed 3DMark Vantage altogether, the GeForce 9300 was able to finish the test and have decent frame rates throughout. The GeForce 9300 chipset is 20% faster than the Intel G45 chipset across the board. By this performance metric, it is likely that the faster 9400 boards will outstrip the G45 chipset by 35% or more across the board. This is a very impressive feat for an integrated graphics card to say the least. Had the GeForce 9300 and 9400 come out when the G45 launched, Intel might have had a real problem. Intel is rumored to have a new CPU coming out for the high-end and we'll see how that translates with integrated graphics at that time.

Video games feature ads for Obama's campaign
Barack Obama has become the first presidential candidate to buy ad space inside a game! Eighteen video games, including the extremely popular "Guitar Hero" and "Madden 09," will feature in-game ads from the Obama campaign in the final weeks before the election. The ads — appearing on billboards and other signage — remind players that early voting has begun and plug a campaign Web site that encourages people to register for early voting.
The timing of the Obama ads within the video game varies from state to state. Players in smaller states may see the Obama ads for almost an entire month, while users in bigger states may see them for a shorter period. "It reaches an audience that is typically hard to reach — young males, roughly 18 to 34," said Rockwood. "That's very appealing to our advertisers."

Kingston sees surge in demand for NAND flash products in China
Memory module maker Kingston Technology expects a staggering increase in shipments of NAND flash products in October as demand in China is growing strongly. Kingston said its shipments of NAND flash products will increase 250% on year in October, with sales from the segment expected to hit the highest level of the year.
The maker explained that following the country's long National Day holiday, the China market has been actively seeking to refill its inventory. Demand is exploding following a weak third quarter that failed to see a seasonal upturn. Although the NAND flash market is still in oversupply, the surge in demand is also helping prevent NAND flash prices from falling further in the short term, it added. Prices are also being stabilized by production cutbacks by Hynix Semiconductor and Micron, as well by Toshiba's decision to reduce its capital expenditure (capex), Kingston said. The NAND flash suppliers' moves have given the market a strong signal that they are starting the address the serious problem of oversupply, the US-based maker commented.

October 10 News from Around the Web
The Overclockers Club posted their review of the XFX 9800GTX+. Find this and other reviews from around the web by visiting our forums!
"Since this card higher speeds from the start I had to wonder how much was left in the tank. As it turns out the tank had some gas left. I kept bumping it up and up until I hit the wall on the core and then the same with the memory. Then I had to find the best combination of the three clock speeds. Once I reached about 840-850 MHz on the core I was getting crashes, so I used RivaTuner to unlink and back down the shader cores a touch to move the bar a little higher. This yielded an increase on the GPU core of 123MHz and a final speed of 863MHz. The shader core clock increased by 235MHz and 150Mhz on the memory. All pretty substantial increases on air cooling. Speaking of cooling the stock cooler does a great job cooling this smaller core."

Google launches AdSense for Games
If Google's entry into a field of advertising doesn't legitimize it, nothing can. And that's why the in-game advertising industry just got a huge shot in the arm. On Tuesday night, Google announced the beta launch of its new AdSense for Games program, the search giant's first foray into the video games market, and the long-awaited answer to the question of what the company planned to do with AdScape Media, which it bought for $23 million in February 2007.
According to Christian Oestlien, the senior product manager for AdSense for Games, the program's beta launch will focus on the placement of a variety of forms of ads in Flash-based casual games and some larger titles. In the beginning at least, Oestlien said, Google will work with partners like PlayFish, Mochi Media, Demand Media and Konami. The latter, Oestlien said, would use AdSense for Games to place ads in well-known titles like Frogger and Dance Dance Revolution. And among the initial advertisers participating in the program are eSurance, Sprint, and Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Make sure you get both the 64-bit beta driver and the 64-bit beta driver patch. For some reason there is already a patch for something that was just released last night. I'm not even going to ask!

“Advances in hardware and software allow today’s games to offer consumers an exceptional entertainment experience, and we wanted to take the next step by immersing gamers into these environments with the innovative new NIA,” stated Ryan Petersen, CEO of the OCZ Technology Group. “The NIA radically changes the ways that gamers can interact and control elements within games, and can be configured in a matter of minutes for any game that is already published or will be released.”

Synology DS408 4-Drive SATA RAID Gigabit NAS @ Benchmark Reviews and other reviews from around the web can be found by visiting our forums!
As a network administrator for several small and medium businesses, I am used to seeing pedestal servers with expensive Windows Server edition Operating Systems running for the sole purpose of serving files out to the workgroup or domain. Such environments has made it necessary to look for money-saving opportunities in the office environment. A few years back Network Attached Storage server hit the scene with a price tag comparable to the alternative, but the NAS products offered in today's market are far superior and cost far less than before. Synology has pioneered the NAS server into mainstream, and now offers devices to fit every range and environment from home to enterprise. Benchmark Reviews has the good fortune to performance test the 4-drive SATA Disk Station DS408 RAID NAS.

Nvidia can't shake MacBook, chipset unit rumors
Nvidia has become a Silicon Valley hot spot for rumors. One is tied to an analyst downgrade Monday, the other to the rumored Apple MacBook refresh. An analyst rekindled speculation Monday that the world's largest graphics chip supplier would sell off its chipset business, while rumors persist that the company would play a larger role in an expected refresh of the Apple MacBook.
Nvidia shares fell Monday after a Pacific Crest analyst issued a negative report on the company's prospects. In the report, the analyst said "our checks confirm" that Nvidia will exit the chipset business next year. Nvidia chipsets--sometimes referred to as MCPs--serve as supporting silicon for the company's graphics processors. In the past, Nvidia has denied that

Ford feature will let parents set limits for teens
So you think junior is a little too lead-footed when he drives the family car? Starting next year, Ford Motor will give you the power to do something about it. The company will roll out a new feature on many 2010 models that can limit teen drivers to 80 mph, using a computer chip in the key.
The feature, called "MyKey," will be standard on an unspecified number of Ford models when the 2010 cars and trucks come out late next summer. The feature will spread to the entire Ford, Lincoln and Mercury lineup as models are updated, spokesman Wes Sherwood said. Ford arrived at the 80-mph limit even though freeway speed limits are lower in most states because it wanted to leave a margin in case an unusual situation arises, Buczkowski said. In some states, freeway speed limits are above 70 mph, Sherwood said. "Just lopping it off at exactly 70 mph was felt to be too limiting," Buczkowski said.

AMD to Spin Off Manufacturing Operations and Forms Capital Region Plant with ATIC
AMD and the Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC) of Abu Dhabi today announced the creation of a U.S.-headquartered, leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing company to address growing demand for independent, leading-edge foundry production capabilities. The new global company, to be temporarily called “The Foundry Company”, will serve this need by combining advanced process technology, industry-leading manufacturing facilities and aggressive plans to expand its global capacity footprint. At the same time, the Mubadala Development Company will increase its current investment in AMD to 19.3 percent on a fully diluted basis. Mubadala, an existing 8.1 percent AMD shareholder, will increase its stake to 19.3 percent of outstanding AMD shares on a fully diluted basis. This will be accomplished through the purchase for $314 million of 58 million newly issued AMD shares and warrants for 30 million additional shares. Mubadala will also have the right to appoint a designee to AMD’s board of directors.
AMD will contribute to The Foundry Company its manufacturing facilities, including two fabrication facilities in Dresden, Germany, as well as related assets and intellectual property rights. ATIC will invest $2.1 billion to purchase its stake in The Foundry Company, of which it will invest $1.4 billion directly in the new entity and the remainder will be paid to AMD to purchase additional shares in The Foundry Company. The Foundry Company will also assume approximately $1.2 billion of AMD’s existing debt. ATIC has committed additional equity funding to The Foundry Company of a minimum of $3.6 billion and up to $6.0 billion over the next five years to fund the expansion of The Foundry Company’s chip-making capacity beyond the manufacturing facilities initially contributed by AMD. These funds will be used by The Foundry Company to proceed with capacity expansion at its fabs in Dresden, Germany, including an upgrade of one of its fabs to a state-of-the-art facility, and begin construction on a new state-of-the-art facility in Saratoga County, New York, subject to the transfer of previously-approved New York State incentives. The New York facility is expected to create more than 1,400 direct jobs, and, through its operation, to generate an additional 5,000 jobs in the region. Once operational, the New York facility will be the only independently-managed, leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing foundry in the United States.

Asustek Computer shipped around 700,000 Eee PCs in September this year, a new monthly high for the company. Slower growth expected in tech industry
Lower prices on consumer electronics may help carry the tech industry through a difficult holiday shopping season. But analysts believe corporate spending on computer servers, PCs and business software is entering a period of slower growth that will last well into next year.
With banks failing and the stock market in turmoil, holiday shoppers may be nervous about spending too much on laptops, mobile phones or video consoles, analysts say. And businesses and government agencies — which spend three times more on technology in this country than individuals spend on consumer electronics — had delayed some purchases even before the chaos on Wall Street. In recent quarters, the tech industry has seemed immune to the larger economic downturn, as major companies like Apple, Hewlett-Packard and Oracle reported soaring profits and double-digit revenue growth. But industry analysts say the impact has only been delayed, not avoided.

Asustek accounts for 80% of P45-based motherboards shipments
Asustek's P45-based motherboards occupy an 80% share of worldwide shipments, according to sources at the company. The company's motherboard shipments in the third quarter are estimated at 6.12 million units, a growth of 20% and higher than original expectations of 15%. In the fourth quarter, hopes are high that next generation X58-based motherboards will continue to drive company sales.
However, sources at channel vendors pointed out that since Asustek only shipped 17.22 million units in the first three quarters of this year, the company would need to ship 6.78 million units in the fourth quarter in order to reach its target of 24 million for 2008, a difficult task

Albatron Announces The KI780G Mini-ITX Motherboard - AMD 780G Chipset
Albatron Technology has just announced the KI780G Mini-ITX mainboard featuring the AMD 780G chipset. This is one of the few mini-ITX boards on the market that support this chipset, which means it offers support for powerful 4-core, 3-core AMD Phenom processors with AMD AM2+ socket. Not only does the KI780G define a new class of performance Mini-ITX mainboards, it boasts the most complete set of functionality on par with many ATX boards on the market. The board looks pretty nice and if you are building a system with a mini-ITX platform, then be sure to give this board a look.

As for serious 3D gaming, the KI780G provides a PCIe X16 slot which employs four of the lanes but can still accept any PCIe X16 VGA card. As the 4-lane bandwidth is not as important as having a good GPU for 3D gaming, the KI780G has been shown to handle hardcore 3D games as long as it is used with an adequate VGA card.In addition to the great graphics facilities, the KI780G has everything you need to build your Home Theatre PC; a complete set of monitor connectors including HDMI; full 8-channel audio capabilities plus SDPIF in/out; and up to 10 USB 2.0 channels for the rest of your hi-tech gadgets.

DRAM price continues to weaken despite production cutback
DRAM makers such as PSC, Elpida, and Hynix have separately announced production cutbacks on September 8th , 9th , and 18th. If the cutbacks proceed as scheduled, we expect to see a reduction in worldwide DRAM production by 5 to 6% around end of October to November.
Spot market was encouraged - rose from 1.32 USD on September 8th to 1.4 USD on September 10th for an increase of 6% - initially when the first cutback was announced. However, the rebound was short-lived; by September 11th, price on spot market began to fall again. After the last announcement of cutback from Hynix, spot price failed to continue the rise with average price increasing slightly by 0.01 USD then weakened by the continued slow demand.

Sapphire HD4850 Dual Slot Heatsink Review @ OCC and other reviews from around the web can be found by visiting our forums!
"The Sapphire HD4850 Dual Slot is a slightly different animal than the standard HD4850 from Sapphire. It maintains the same GPU (RV770) and amount of memory (512MB GDDR3 on a 256 bit bus), but is built on a Sapphire designed and built PCB, rather than using the reference design PCB. In addition to the non-reference PCB, there is the non-reference cooling solution to go with the board. There are no memory heatsinks used, but there is one additional heatsink at the front of the PCB. The clock speeds stay right at the factory specified 625MHz on the GPU core and 993MHz on the 512MB of memory. The card is slightly shorter than the standard PCB so this should allow some additional clearance in tight cases."
