Microsoft dumps Vista virtualization limits

Microsoft Corp. on Monday dropped its prohibition on running the least-expensive versions of Windows Vista in virtual machines, doubling the choices for Macintosh owners who run the rival operating system in VMware Inc.'s Fusion or Parallels Inc.'s Parallels.

Beginning immediately, Vista Home Basic and Vista Home Premium can be run in a virtualized environment, Microsoft said Monday. The pair are the cheapest editions of the operating system available at retail, selling in full versions for $199 and $239, respectively. Yahoo is planning to lay off hundreds of people as part of an effort to refocus its sprawling Internet services to compete with rivals like Google and Facebook, according to a source close to the company. It's unclear whether the cuts will be deep enough to satisfy Wall Street, which has been urging the Internet company to shed as much as 25 percent of its workforce of about 14,000. VMware Versus Microsoft - Let the Battle Begin!

Microsoft has recently announced it interest in pursuing the virtualization market that is today dominated by VMware. A new report from Forrester Research claims that Microsoft is organizing a huge amount of resources into creating - at the very least - a data center model that can respond dynamically and quickly to the needs of business.

But clearly a fire has been lit under Microsoft, which was comparatively late to the virtualization game, despite its 2003 purchase of Connectix. The moves come as virtualization is entering the mainstream on the server side and a looming presence on the desktop. Forrester said a recent survey showed half of businesses using server virtualization currently, with two-thirds planning to by next year.

GIGABYTE Launches Numerous Dynamic Energy Saver Motherboards

GIGABYTE has just announced the launch of their full range of Dynamic Energy Saver motherboards, including X48, X38 and P35-based motherboards, delivering unparalleled power savings of up to 70% and up to 20% improved power efficiency with the simple click of a button. Unlike traditional power designs that keep all power phases active at all times no matter what the loading, GIGABYTE’s Dynamic Energy Saver features multiple gears, allowing the CPU to maintain optimum power efficiency from light all the way to heavy loading. In a traditional power phase design, each gear needs to operate at less than optimum efficiency, causing gaps in power efficiency. With the ability to switch on and off gears before they start to loose efficiency, GIGABYTE’s Dynamic Energy Saver is able to provide up to 20% improved power efficiency.

“With more than one year of intensive design and testing, GIGABYTE’s Dynamic Energy Saver represents a truly amazing revolution in motherboard development,” said Johnson Lin, CEO GIGABYTE UNITED INC . “With one little click, users are able to take advantage of up to 70% CPU power savings without sacrificing computing performance. Imagine the potential for power savings on a global scale if every motherboard in the world was able to provide similar power savings.”

Microsoft targets VMware with new strategy

Microsoft has acquired a start-up company called Calista Technologies and expanded its alliance with Citrix Systems, targeting VMware's early lead in virtualization technology. Microsoft unveiled the news on Monday as part of a broader call to arms against VMware that includes adopting virtualization technology, which allows one computer to act like many "virtual" machines, across its core software lines.

Virtualization is one of the most talked-about technologies in the software industry, because it disrupts the traditional business model that marries one machine to one piece of software like an operating system. The technology allows companies to save on hardware costs by running existing equipment more efficiently. Microsoft, the world's largest software maker, said it acquired Calista for an undisclosed sum. Calista designs technology that helps compress and deliver "virtualized" desktops running on a remote computer server.

Another Intel dual-core Celeron in 2Q08

Having recently launching its first dual-core Celeron E1000 series CPU, E1200, Intel is ready to launch another family member with a faster core frequency in the second quarter of 2008, according to sources at motherboard makers. Intel is planning to launch E1400 with a core frequency of 2GHz, 800MHz FSB, L2 cache of 512KB, and maximum TDP of 65W. The chip is based on a 65nm Conroe core and supports Intel 64, XD Bit (Execute Disable Bit) and Speed Step technology. Pricing will be set at US$53 in a thousand-unit tray quantities.

In the first quarter of 2008, Intel will let the dual-core Celeron E1200 and single-core Celeron 440, 430 and 420 defend the entry-level segment, while in the second quarter, the company will let the Celeron E1400, 440 and 430 continue the job, while phasing out the E1200 and 420. During its first quarter of sales, the Celeron E1000 series accounted for around 3% of Intel's total desktop CPU shipments, and the ratio will not exceed 10% in 2008. The series is expected to completely replace single-core Celerons by the second quarter of 2009, noted the sources.

January 21 News from Around the Web

Find reviews from around the web, including this review on the Asus Blitz Extreme from OCC, by visiting our forums!

"I never thought I would be able to pull more performance out of my existing hardware. My CPU has hit walls from 440 to 470 FSB on other boards but usually I could coax another 5 FSB from it with extreme voltages. As it turns out, the old Quad had a little more life left in it after all. 490 x 7 was stable in Memtest 1.70 but would crash upon loading Windows. Lowering the clocks a little further resulted in a boot into Windows at 484 x 7. Not only did this clock speed boot into Windows, but was Prime 95 stable for over 24 hours as well. Voltages on the northbridge, CPU and CPU PLL were increased to gain stability at this clockspeed. A nice little feature in the BIOS is the color coding of the miscellaneous voltages. Green, of course, for normal, Yellow for high and Red for crazy. This gives you an indication of what levels Asus thinks are "safe" and which are not. Overclocking the memory did not require a whole lot of tweaking to get the memory to perform. By focusing on the CPU clocks I ran the memory slower than it is capable of. This memory does indeed push to 940MHz on this board with timings of 8-7-6-20 at 1.96volts. Pushing the limits on the Asus Blitz Extreme was not a problem. The crash recovery requires just a shutdown and reboot. This takes you back to the default settings, so the next boot is trouble free. Kind of refreshing if you ask me. If it does get to the point where the simple reboot does not work, there is always the clear CMOS button on the I/O panel just in case. The final clock speed of 484 x 7 is the most "Extreme" clockspeed that my Q6600 has ever been able to achieve."

China Internet users top 200 million

The number of Internet users in China soared past 200 million in 2007, a new report from the country's quasi-government Internet overseer said Thursday. China's Internet population stood at 210 million at the end of last year, up 53 percent from the same time in 2006 when there were 137 million, the China Internet Network Information Centre said in its semi-annual report on Internet use.

That figure puts China just 5 million users away from becoming the world's largest wired nation -- and with only about 16 percent of the population online. At its current growth rate, China will become the world's top Internet market sometime in the next few months.

U.S. game sales rise 28 percent in December

U.S. sales of video game hardware and software rose 28 percent in December from a year earlier as holiday shoppers snapped up new consoles like Nintendo Co Ltd's top-selling Wii, market research firm NPD said on Thursday.

"While I wouldn't count on similar growth in 2008, I would expect to see ... more growth proportionately coming from software sales," NPD analyst Anita Frazier said in written commentary on the data. "While we will continue to see strong hardware sales, particularly if prices come down again, the spotlight now turns from hardware to software."

Consumer slowdown may hit IT this year!

The American consumer has ridden to the rescue of corporate revenues for years. Buoyed by highly valued homes that served as virtual ATM machines, consumers indulged their appetite for goods and services, particularly consumer electronics and computer-related devices. That's starting to change. As the economy slows, there are signs that the pace of consumer spending is not only slowing, but actually shrinking for the first time in years.

Bad news for consumer-oriented tech companies? Of course. But don't think that enterprise IT providers are necessarily exempt. Spending ripples through the economy; dollars spent at restaurants may ultimately result in the purchases of inventory management software from Oracle, or servers from Sun for use at corporate headquarters. American Express, for example, is an enormous consumer of enterprise software, hardware, and services, but with late payments on the rise, the giant credit card company could well dial back IT spending.

Microsoft reports security hole in Excel 2003

Microsoft Corp. said hackers have found a way to use some older versions of its Excel spreadsheet program to take over control of people's computers. Microsoft said late Tuesday that it is investigating reports of such attacks, but has not yet determined whether it will patch the hole, or when.

People who open a specially crafted Excel file from an e-mail attachment or visit a compromised Web site could be inviting hackers to take over their PCs for malicious purposes such as stealing passwords and other personal information, or sending out spam. Microsoft Office Excel 2003 Service Pack 2, Excel Viewer 2003, Excel 2002, Excel 2000 and Excel 2004 for Mac all contain the security hole.

Rolling Stones May Leave EMI as Financier Guy Hands Cuts Jobs

The Rolling Stones may leave EMI Group Plc after more than 20 years on the label, said a person with direct knowledge of the matter. The band would be at least the fourth to express unhappiness with owner Guy Hands's job cuts. Mick Jagger and the Stones are considering options for the rights to their song library and new recordings after the band's contract with EMI expires in May, said the person, who asked not to be named because the plans are confidential.

The band has ties with Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group, the world's largest music company. Yesterday, the Rolling Stones said in a statement that Universal will distribute the soundtrack for Martin Scorsese's film ``Shine a Light.'' The movie was shot at the band's performance at the Beacon Theatre in New York in 2006, and includes archival footage. Apple Patches iPhone, iPod, QuickTime Security Flaws

Apple has released its first security updates of the new year, fixing bugs in its QuickTime media player and iPhone and iPod touch devices. As with previous updates, the iPhone 1.1.3 software patch sent those who had installed the unauthorized Jailbreak software-- used to run third-party applications on the iPhone-- scrambling to get their phones up and running. These updates will be rolled out to customers over the next week via the devices' iTunes update mechanism.

According to the Unofficial Apple Weblog, it is possible to run third-party software following this latest update, but the process is complex. A simpler Jailbreak 1.1.3 script is expected to be posted eventually at the iPhone Wiki, which is the hub of much iPhone hacking. The iPhone update fixes two flaws in the Safari browser, including a critical bug that could be exploited to run unauthorized software on the device. A third bug could let an unauthorized user bypass Passcode Lock and launch iPhone applications. The iPod touch is susceptible to the Safari bugs, Apple said.

Intel optimistic despite some economic uncertainty

Though cable news pundits may predict hard times ahead, reports from IBM and Intel for 2008 show the technology industry isn't ready to mimic the banking industry's financial woes just yet. Intel announced its second consecutive record-breaking quarter Tuesday, though earnings just barely met the company's own projections.

The company said revenue for its computing products was on target; revenue for NAND memory was below expectations; and while total microprocessor units set a record, average selling prices were flat for the quarter. It's not great news, but unless CEO Paul Otellini is throwing a smoke screen as bad as anything from the denial stage of the dot-com bust, Intel doesn't see the sort of tech sector meltdown that some fret could occur. "In the fourth quarter we saw that computing-related products actually grew as we expected...on the back of a very strong (third quarter)," said Intel CFO Stacy Smith. "The part that caused us to be a little below (the) midpoint (of expectations) was the demand pricing environment was worse than we expected." He said demand in its CPU business in particular continued to grow in the fourth quarter, and the company said there were no unusual cancellations of orders or build-up of inventory. "All felt pretty healthy," Smith said.

Apple also said it would let people rent films over the Web with upgrades to its iTunes online media store, a technological challenge to a movie industry still largely focused on DVDs.

Jobs said the new notebook was the thinnest available, measuring 0.76 inches at its thickest point and tapering to just 0.16 inches. Priced from $1,800, the Air bridges the gap between Apple's entry-level and high-end laptops, but analysts voiced concern that it could steal customers away from pricier products.

Apple stock falls as fans rave

Steve Jobs gave it his best, delivering a new must-have gadget called the MacBook Air, deals with a full house of compliant Hollywood studios, and more bells and whistles on his existing products and services in a 90-minute speech than most technology companies do in a year. But Wall Street was not impressed; shares of Apple (AAPL) got hammered, falling more than 10 points during the course of the keynote despite the impressive sales figures Jobs rattled off: 4 million iPhones, 5 million copies of the Leopard operating system, 4 billion songs, 125 million TV shows, 7 million movies.

And even in the products Jobs did deliver, there were almost as many questions as there were answers. How much, for example, does the 64 GB solid-state version of the MacBook Air cost? Jobs didn’t say and none of the Apple reps on the floor seemed to know. (The answer can be found on the Apple Store: $3,098 with the high-end 1.8 GHz chip, a whopping $1,299 premium over the standard 80 GB hard drive model.) How do you replace the battery on the MacBook? (It turns out that, as with the iPhone and iPod, you can’t — it’s sealed into the gadget.) Where’s the Ethernet plug? (There isn’t one; you have to buy a USB to Ethernet adaptor.)

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770 CPU pushed back to Feb-March 2008, say sources

ntel has pushed back the volume shipment date of its Core 2 Extreme QX9770 processors for the high-end desktop segment to February-March 2008 instead of January as reported previously, according to sources at Taiwan motherboard makers. The quad-core 3.2GHz QX9770, which will be available at US$1,399 in thousand-unit quantities, is to replace the Core 2 Extreme QX9650 processor launched in November 2007, the sources noted.

However, Intel is yet to phase out the 3.0GHz QX9650 despite the planned launch of the QX9770, said the sources noting that the two quad-core CPUs will be available simultaneously, although the 1k-unit price for the QX9770 will be US$400 higher than that for the QX9650. The QX9770 will be Intel's last high-end desktop CPU to support FSB technology before Intel's first Nehalem-microarchitecture CPU, Bloomfield, based on QPI (quick path interconnect) technology is launched in the fourth quarter, the sources noted.

Intel 4Q Results Disappoint Wall Street

Intel Corp.'s profit leaped 51 percent as sales of microprocessors accelerated in the fourth quarter, but the world's largest semiconductor company's stock plunged after hours because the results fell short of Wall Street's expectations. Intel shares plummeted more than 14 percent, falling by $3.27 to $19.43 after the results were released. During regular-session trading, Intel they had lost 39 cents, or 1.7 percent, to close at $22.69.

The Santa Clara-based company made $2.3 billion, or 38 cents per share, in profit for the three months ended Dec. 29, missing analysts' estimates by two cents per share. In the same quarter a year earlier, the world's No. 1 maker of the microprocessors that act as the brains of personal computers posted net income of $1.5 billion, or 26 cents per share. Intel said it sold a record number of those chips during the typically robust holiday quarter but noted their prices remained flat.

Intel Faces Demand Doubt - fourth-quarter earnings reported today!

It's been a rough start to the year for Intel's stock. After only two weeks of trading, the chipmaker's shares are down more than 12% in 2008, closing Monday at $23.08. Now, the company will get a chance to answer the bears when it reports fourth-quarter earnings after Tuesday's close.

The big question hanging over Intel -- as well as the overall tech sector -- is whether a slowing economy will derail sales of PCs and other electronic goods. Some investors fear a recession is around the corner; others believe consumer spending is already drying up. The bear case was in full force earlier this month when two financial analysts hit Intel with back-to-back downgrades, warning of weakening PC orders and rising inventory levels.

Coming to the Mac in 2008: 'Spore' by Electronic Arts

In its early stages, Electronic Arts' forthcoming and much-anticipated game Spore was code-named Sim Everything, a play on its heritage as the newest game by The Sims creator Will Wright. But now, "sim everything" has another meaning for the company: EA is set to announce Tuesday it will release Spore later this year simultaneously for PCs and Macs.

The announcement is timed to coincide with the Macworld Expo, which begins Tuesday in San Francisco. At the convention, EA will show Spore running on Macs. In a joint announcement last year at Apple's developers conference, it was revealed that the video game giant would be bringing some of its biggest franchises to the Mac. The news that Spore will be one of those titles and that it will hit Macs at the same time as PCs is a big move for the company.

AMD Says Customers Demand Low-End Power-Efficient AMD Phenom Chips.

As those who wanted to have high-speed AMD Phenom processors ask why the chipmaker decided to delay their desired microprocessors, the maker of central processing units just claims that hardly anyone expects high-performance chips by AMD now.

Advanced Micro Devices said on Friday that customers demanded the company to release lower-end lower-power AMD Phenom microprocessors instead of higher performance AMD Phenom 9700 and 9900 central processing units. The world’s largest x86 chip manufacturer did not unveil whether its customers did not want to get higher-speed Phenom chips, or the company had to delay the release of its higher-speed chips, or it could not get the new steppings of chips in time.

China Mobile Ends Talks With Apple to Sell IPhone

China Mobile Ltd. said it ended talks to sell Apple Inc.'s IPhone in China, stalling Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs's plans to introduce the handset in the biggest market by users. Rainie Lei, a Hong Kong-based spokeswoman for China Mobile, said she is unaware of any plans for further talks with Apple. She wouldn't say why the discussions stopped. Jill Tan, a Hong Kong- based spokeswoman for Apple, declined to comment.

The negotiations ended because Apple wanted more revenue from game, music and video downloads than China Mobile would offer, the Sina.com Web site said today. Apple shares rose the most in more than a year in November after China Mobile Chairman Wang Jianzhou said the companies were in talks to sell the iPhone. "It's bad news for Apple," said Johnny Yeh, an analyst at Quam Ltd. in Hong Kong, who rates China Mobile's shares "buy." "China Mobile would have helped immediately sell lots of iPhones because they have such a large user base; Apple entering China without China Mobile won't be as substantial."

Near-final Microsoft Vista SP1 goes public

Microsoft has made Vista's Service Pack 1 near-final "release candidate" available for download to the general public, after initially choosing to restrict it to 15,000 beta testers when it debuted last week.

The update is largely a collection of bug fixes and performance and compatibility improvements, but includes some minor new features. SP1 RC Refresh, as the update is known, requires previous versions of SP1 to be uninstalled before it can be replaced with Refresh, which may entail waiting for the computer to "reboot multiple times," according to Microsoft. After multiple rebooting, a period of an hour is required to allow the installer service to "clean up and complete the uninstall" to prevent possible installation errors.

Intel has recently released details of its Shelton'08-based low-cost notebook platform (Basic Platform) to partners and has set the launch schedule for the third quarter this year, according to sources at PC makers. The platform adopts Intel's single-core Diamondville CPU with a core frequency of 1.6GHz, 533MHz FSB and power consumption of 3.5W. The platform's total power consumption is around 8W, translating to battery usage time of between 3-4 hours.

The platform also consist of a 945GSE chipset, which includes built-in DirectX 9 graphics and supports single channel DDR2 memory. A 802.11g Wi-Fi module, USB/PATA port SSD (solid state drive), and a 7- or 8-inch panel will typically round out the platform, noted the sources. At initial launch, the notebooks will be priced between NT$10,000-16,000 (US$300-500) depending on finial hardware specifications and design. Intel is planning to launch a dual-core version Diamondville CPU in the second or third quarter next year, the sources added. Currently, Micro-Star International (MSI) and Gigabyte Technology have already started product development, while Dell, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Acer are expected to follow at a later time, noted the sources.

Traders Speculate Microsoft Takeover of Logitech

In the world of computer users, there are two types of mouse and keyboard users – those who prefer Microsoft and those who prefer Logitech. Oddly enough, Microsoft itself may prefer Logitech as stock traders speculated that the software giant would launch a takeover bid for the Swiss-based peripherals maker.

"I am a co-founder of Logitech. Would you be willing to sell your child?" Borel told Reuters in an interview. "I have no reason to sell. But I will not be the one to decide. I own only some 6 percent so I will neither enable nor prevent a sale of Logitech."

AMD Phenom Quad-Core Processor Update

You may have seen a few online headlines today indicating “AMD Phenom processor delays.” AMD sent Legit Reviews an e-mail as they would like to clarify where things stand with this on-going roll-out of AMD true quad-core and triple-core processors. Check out what they have to say below.

  • AMD launched its highest-volume versions of AMD Phenom quad-core processors in mid-November (models 9500 and 9600), and we shipped hundreds of thousands in Q4 2007. OEMs demonstrated production AMD Phenom processor-based desktops during 2008 International CES this week.
  • For the enthusiast market, AMD then launched a performance tunable “Black Edition” of the 9600 model in December 2007 to address the enthusiast market. This was an additional quad-core product added to our Q4 roadmap and is now available on major e-tailer sites.
  • AMD will now introduce the AMD Phenom 9700 and 9900 models in Q2 2008. This decision was based on OEM input on how AMD should prioritize its next two waves of AMD Phenom processor models. Based on these customer inputs, AMD will continue to prioritize volume-based Phenom products, including the AMD Phenom triple-core processor introduction for consumer and commercial markets this quarter, and now a new energy–efficient 65W AMD Phenom 9000e series processor in this quarter (instead of Q2). AMD Phenom 9700 and 9900 models will immediately follow next quarter.
  • Our OEM customers are placing more priority on our energy-efficient and triple-core processors, where the volumes and ability to differentiate products take precedence over the more prestigious, but much lower volume, higher performance quad-core products.
