Intel has ARM Architecture in its crosshairs

Intel could not have signaled its target for the next five years any more clearly than it did at last week's Intel Developer Forum. The world's largest chipmaker didn't make a whole lot of news at the latest edition of IDF, but it did send a message to the legion of chipmakers that build chips based on the ARM architecture: We're coming for you.

A few years ago, Intel tried to get into mobile phones with a product called Manitoba. That project was an attempt to waltz into the mobile phone industry by integrating one of its XScale applications processor (based on ARM's instruction set, coincidentally) a communications processor, and some flash memory into a single package. It was a flop. Intel was never able to convince phone makers to take a risk on its products, and it sold the business to Marvell last year for $600 million.

Google Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin are Each Worth $18.5 billion

Googlers Larry Page and Sergey Brin, both 34, tied for fifth on the new Forbes 400 list of the richest Americans released Thursday. According to the magazine's survey, they are each worth $18.5 billion, placing them just behind Oracle's Larry Ellison, 63, who is worth $26 billion.

That makes Page and Brin the youngest ever to crack the top 10 on the Forbes list. Their net worth has more than quadrupled since they first made the list in 2004, when their fortunes were "only" $4 billion each. And at the speed their fortunes are growing, the only question now is whether they can topple Bill Gates, 51, ranked first for the 14th straight year with $59 billion.

Apple iPhone has potential security problems

Apple's iPhone is a tough target for hackers, but a security researcher warned Friday that there are ways the sleek device could potentially be compromised. The iPhone has no security software, but Apple doesn't let people load third-party programs on the device, reducing the risk of infection from malicious software. But when the iPhone is connected to the Web, possibilities emerge, said Marius van Oers, a security researcher with McAfee's AVERT Labs in Amsterdam.

"It's fairly easy to send someone an SMS (Short Messaging Service) or an e-mail with a Web link," he said. "And once you go to the Web link, then that server can inject code into the iPhone, and if that happens, [a hacker] can have full control." That's what happened with a Safari flaw found by Independent Security Evaluators, a company that detailed its findings at the Black Hat security conference in August. By constructing a malicious Web site, the researchers injected code into the iPhone and pilfered recent text messages, phone numbers and e-mail. Apple has since patched the flaw.

Power supplies have come of age in the last few years. This new coming of age is due mostly to the new energy standards set forth by the government. These new changes allow the end user to have a more reliable and efficient piece of equipment, which brings me to a new energy efficient power supply I have from Ultra. This is from the line of power supplies named the X3 collection, which range from 600 watt to 1600 watt. The unit I have for review is the 600 watt model. These power supplies are 100% modular, and the 1000 watt model comes in two style: either for SLI or CrossFire. The new line of X3 power supplies will convert as much as 85% of the used AC current into useable DC current, the rest being lost to heat and other electrical anomalies. Being fully modular also eliminates any unneeded cable inside the enclosure, thus giving the end result a cleaner look.

Google Unveils Mobile Ads Service

Online search giant Google Inc. is expanding the volume of advertising that it delivers to mobile devices, hoping to make more money from the expanding audience of consumers surfing the Web when they're away from home or the office. Google has been offering a version of its AdWords search marketing program for mobile placement since last year, but this week, it formally introduced AdSense, which serves up contextually relevant ads on content sites, in some markets.

The move means any Web site accessible by a mobile Web browser will be able to become part of Google's ad network. Previously, only search queries directed at Google or third-party sites it provides search technology to could generate mobile ads.

Apple Launches iPhone in UK

Apple Inc.'s iPhone will go on sale in Britain and the UK on Nov. 9 will have the O2 network as its exclusive carrier, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said Tuesday. The 8-gigabyte model will sell for $536 (269 pounds), Jobs said at a news conference in London. Still, in many people's eyes, the iPhone’s most obvious weakness is that it does not operate on third generation (3G) mobile networks, which offer higher web browsing speeds compared with their 2G equivalents.

The iPhone will face tougher competition in Europe from Nokia and Sony Ericsson, who have already unveiled their range of phones with high-quality music and Internet browsing functionality. Steve Jobs, who said that he plans to announce "a few more" operators in Europe next quarter and when asked about lack of subsidies, said: "Sometime you get what you pay for too."

Intel X48 Express Chipset Has Competition - Boeing X-48B

The Intel X48 Express chipset might have support for 1600MHz FSB and DDR3 memory, but it has nothing compared to the X-48B from Boeing. In the design of Boeing's experimental X-48B aircraft, it's hard to know where the fuselage stops and the wings begin.

In this picture from August 14, an X-48B prototype is flying over Rogers Dry Lake at Edwards Air Force Base in California, in its fifth trip aloft since its debut flight in mid-July. Following a sixth flight not long ago, the aircraft is now on hiatus till sometime in October as Boeing--and partners NASA and the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory--perform maintenance, update software and flight control systems, and evaluate data from the first round of flights. Among the physical changes under way: engineers are taking off removable leading edges with extended slats and replacing them with slatless leading edges, NASA said.

AMD Phenom triple-core processors show up on their desktop roadmap

Delivering a multi-core triple threat, AMD today announced the addition of AMD Phenom triple-core processors to its desktop roadmap. AMD Phenom triple-core processors, expected to be the world's first PC processors to integrate three computational cores on a single die of silicon, can help deliver the visual experience, performance and multitasking capabilities of true multi-core technology to a broader audience. Offering state-of-the-art platforms and a next-generation architecture with expected availability in Q1 2008, the industry's only x-86 triple-core desktop processor shows why AMD's the smarter choice, with its expanded portfolio for customers to offer platforms with unique multi-core options. AMD Phenom quad-core processors remain on schedule to ship in 2007.

AMD Phenom processors with three cores are a response to demand for increased performance delivered by multi-core processors when running state-of-the-art applications. According to Mercury Research, quad-core processors represented less than two percent of desktop shipments in Q2 2007. AMD believes this suggests a need for a wider selection of multi-core solutions. Triple-core AMD processors may stimulate broader multi-core adoption with a product family that scales to more points-of-entry for the customer.

Microsoft suffers decisive EU antitrust defeat

Microsoft suffered a decisive antitrust defeat on Monday when a European Union court upheld a landmark ruling that the world's largest software maker had abused its dominant market position to crush rivals. The second-highest EU court dismissed the company's appeal on all key points against the 2004 European Commission ruling and upheld a record 497 million euro ($689.9 million) fine.

"Its clearly a major defeat for Microsoft. There is no doubt it will spur the Commission on to regulate Microsoft much more significantly," said Chris Bright, a British competition lawyer. The court said Microsoft was unjustified in tying new applications to its Windows operating system in a way that squeezed out rivals and harmed consumer choice.
