CIA and FBI computers used for Wikipedia edits
People using CIA and FBI computers have edited entries in the online encyclopedia Wikipedia on topics including the Iraq war and the Guantanamo prison, according to a new tracing program. The changes may violate Wikipedia's conflict-of-interest guidelines, a spokeswoman for the site said Thursday.
The program, WikiScanner, was developed by Virgil Griffith of the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico and posted this month on a Web site that was quickly overwhelmed with searches. WikiScanner revealed that CIA computers were used to edit an entry on the United States-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. A graphic on casualties was edited to add that many figures were estimated and were not broken down by class. Another entry on former CIA chief William Colby was edited by CIA computers to expand his career history and discuss the merits of a Vietnam War rural pacification program that he headed.

Adobe Flash may be good for cell phones
Adobe's two biggest products for mobile are Flash Lite and Flash Cast and they are pushing them hard in the mobile market. Flash Lite, which is being updated this fall, makes it easier for phone users to access video, games and wallpaper. Flash Cast enables phones to have separate video channels, like on a television.
While Adobe's Flash is already offered on some mobile phones, the company wants to overcome these market barriers and make the technology ubiquitous. This year, Adobe expects 270 million Flash-enabled devices to hit the market, and many of those will be mobile phones. That number is expected to reach 1 billion by 2010, Kovacs said.

Take-Two Interactive Software announced Wednesday that the Securities and Exchange Commission may file charges and seek monetary penalties against the game maker, in connection with the investigation into the company's stock option granting practices. Take-Two, maker of the Grand Theft Auto video games, has been under investigation by the SEC over allegations that the company engaged in improper stock options pricing practices.
"The company continues to cooperate with the staff and continues to expect to resolve this investigation by means of a settlement rather than a contested litigation of charges, and believes that the "Wells" call represents a significant step forward towards that resolution," Take-Two stated in its SEC filing.

DRAM Prices Expected to Peak in September
While the hot PC selling season has arrived, end demand from the spot market has remained relatively weak. A perfect example is the lackluster sales seen in China during July, which traditionally is a period of high demand. Although conditions have improved recently in the spot market when compared to the previous month, prices have not experienced an upswing.
In the forthcoming months, DRAMeXchange believes the Samsung incident will affect the original DRAM and NAND Flash capacity allocation plans of Korea makers in 2H07. Coupled by the ongoing transition to the 70nm process by relevant manufacturers, DRAM prices are expected to peak in September. Fortunately, the subsequent price downtrend should be softer, as some of the capacity will be switched to NAND Flash.

Universal Bypasses Apple to Sell Unrestricted Songs Online
Universal, the world's largest music company, is bypassing the iPod maker, Apple Computers, to sell songs in an unrestricted digital format online through music stores such as Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Google, and Amazon.com. Hopefully, this will be the first of many moves to lead to more widespread "unrestricted" music distribution.
During its trial run, the Vivendi subsidiary said it will make "thousands" of its albums and songs available for download without so-called digital rights management, or DRM, restrictions, to observe consumer demand, price sensitivity and the impact on piracy. The songs will be sold in the MP3 format, which can be played on any handheld music player, including the market-leading iPod from Apple as well as on any cell phone that can play music. The test run will begin Aug. 21 and will run through the end of January.

Google says white-background does't waste more energy than a black one
Not to be outdone in the "green" category, Google says that the white background on its home page doesn't use more energy than a black background would.
The research he has found suggests that LCDs, which are the most common type of monitor, typically consume only slightly less or in some cases slightly more energy when displaying black screens. The biggest energy savings from black screens appears to come from CRT (cathode ray tube) displays, which are common in some places of the world but overall make up about a quarter of computer screens, he said.

ProMOS to speed up transition to 70nm
ProMOS Technologies is said to have sped up the transition to 70nm at its second 12-inch fab (Fab 3) a month ahead of schedule, a move that some industry players interpret as an attempt to grab more market share while Samsung Electronics tweaks its production mix following the recent power outage incident.
ProMOS rival Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC), which had already raised its capital expenditure (capex) partially due to its 70nm progress, is expected to have yields at 70nm reaching 85% in the third quarter, the sources projected. Some industry players have speculated that ProMOS' transition to 70nm is not only driven by good yields, but is also an attempt to grab more market share while Samsung is facing NAND flash production issues caused by the recent power outage incident.

The Fake Steve Jobs Blogger Comes Clean - Daniel Lyons
For the last 14 months, high-tech insiders have been eating up the work of an anonymous blogger who assumed the persona of Steven P. Jobs, Apple’s chief executive and one of the world’s most famous businessmen.
Mr. Lyons said he invented the Fake Steve character last year, when a small group of chief executives turned bloggers attracted some media attention. He noticed that they rarely spoke candidly. 'I thought, wouldn’t it be funny if a C.E.O. kept a blog that really told you what he thought? That was the gist of it.' Mr. Lyons says he recalled trying out the voices of several chief executives before settling on the colorful Apple co-founder. He twice tried to relinquish the blog, but started again after being deluged by fans e-mailing to ask why Fake Steve had disappeared.

Are gadgets, and the Internet, actually addictive?
The debate over whether technology addiction, and especially Internet addiction, is a real mental disorder has been going on for years, but it seems to be gaining ground. At its annual conference last month, members of the American Medical Association considered a proposal to label excessive video and online game playing as an addiction, but decided to table it until further study.
A survey conducted late last year by researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine found that more than one out of every eight users of the Internet in the United States reported having at least one of these and other possible signs of "problematic Internet use." Almost 6 percent, for example, said that "their relationships suffered" as a result of their overuse of the Internet. The researchers called for more study of this "little-studied, negative by-product of the Internet revolution of the last decade."

Its recently announced Bobcat processor will combine computing processing horsepower with graphics acceleration, in a package that AMD says will run on less than one watt of power. AMD says Bobcat will be released in 2009, putting it behind Intel, which is expected to release Silverthorne in the second quarter of 2008.

Congress to probe Yahoo over jailed China journalist
A U.S. congressional committee plans to investigate whether or not Yahoo lied during testimony over its role in a human rights case in China that sent journalist Shi Tao to jail for 10 years.
Shi received a 10-year jail sentence, but has appealed the verdict to the Hunan Higher People's court, arguing that he was unaware that the information was classified. He is also suing Yahoo and its Hong Kong subsidiary in U.S. federal court for damages. Yahoo has denied the involvement of its Hong Kong subsidiary, saying instead that its China unit was forced to hand over the emails in compliance with local laws.

TSMC reportedly to make only GPU part of AMD Fusion
Motherboard makers predict that AMD will retain production of the CPU portion of its Fusion processor at its own fabs or that of Chartered Semiconductor until at least 2009, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to produce the graphics processor unit (GPU) portion of the processor.
AMD's Fusion processor will consist of a GPU manufactured on a 55nm process by TSMC plus a silicon-on-insulator (SOI-) based CPU manufactured on a 45nm process at AMD's Fab 36 and Fab 38 or outsourced to Chartered. A packaging and testing plant will then package the CPU and GPU together as a Fusion processor.

Hynix claims no NAND flash orders shifted from Apple
A Hynix Semiconductor PR spokesperson has refuted claims made in a recent report that Apple has turned to Samsung Electronics to fill NAND flash orders originally placed with Hynix, due to Hynix running into production issues with its 60nm multi-level cell (MLC) process.
While Hynix does admit it had an earlier problem with a certain quantity from a batch of 60nm-made MLC, the spokesperson indicated that the issues have been completely resolved and the Korean memory maker currently has no problems providing products to Apple. The spokesperson added that Hynix confirms that Apple has never shifted orders from Hynix to Samsung.

Microsoft’s HD Photo Could Be Next-Gen 'JPEG XR'
Microsoft Corp. welcomed the decision, announced today by the Joint Photographic Expert Group (JPEG), to introduce a new work item for the standardization of Microsoft’s HD Photo file format. Formal balloting of this work item is being submitted to the JPEG national delegations for approval. Standardization of HD Photo, tentatively titled, “JPEG XR,” will ensure that camera, printer, display and software companies will be able to develop products with the confidence of a consistent scheme that ensures interoperability across their properties.
"The proposed JPEG XR technology simultaneously enables dynamic range extension and preservation of precise details in highly compressed images. This capability is particularly important for applications that demand the high image quality made possible by Foveon’s X3 image sensors,” said Federico Faggin, president and CEO of Foveon Inc. “We are very excited that there is finally a compression technology that is consistent with our goals of getting the most information out of digital images and enabling uncompromising quality for the full range of digital imaging devices and systems."

Dow Jones OKs sale to News Corp. for $5 Billion
Rupert Murdoch is set to achieve his decades-long dream of running the venerable Wall Street Journal after Dow Jones & Co.'s board agreed to News Corp.'s $5 billion buyout bid on Tuesday.
The board decided to accept the offer at a meeting Tuesday evening, according to a source familiar with the matter, shortly after News Corp.'s board approved the deal. The 76-year-old media mogul spent the past three months courting the Bancroft family, which has controlled Dow Jones for more than a century. The Journal and other Dow Jones properties add to Murdoch's sprawling media empire--from the Fox television stations and MySpace online social network to the Times of London and New York Post--and would aid the launch of a Fox business channel later this year.

FCC embraces open access for 700MHz auction
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) set the conditions for next year's wireless spectrum to auction on Tuesday, putting open-access rules on a third of the spectrum.
The FCC voted to require that the winner of 22MHz of spectrum allow any wireless devices to connect to the network, meaning wireless telephone customers could bring their handset devices from other carriers. The FCC, in so-called open-access rules, also prohibited the winning bidder on the 22MHz block of spectrum from blocking or slowing wireless and Web content from competitors.

Thousands of AMD Graphics Cards Recalled From Channel - BIOS Issues
AMD's official graphics card diagnostic and validation software was recently discovered to have a bug that failed to detect defective ATI Radeon HD 2400 and 2600 graphics cards, according to sources at graphics card makers. Channel vendors pointed out the problem with the cards was due to an error in the BIOS application process.
The issue was not only encountered by small makers, Asustek Computer, Micro-Star International (MSI) and Gigabyte Technology all experienced the problem too, noted the sources. Although the problem can be easily solved by reapplying the BIOS, because AMD's software did not detect the defect before shipping, the cards will now need to be returned to the makers to be restored. One first-tier maker has recalled over 20,000-30,000 units already, noted the sources.
