Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 delay won't hurt enterprises

Although Microsoft may not have the first service pack for Windows Vista ready at the end of this year as some expected, financial analysts say that a delay should not have a negative effect on enterprise adoption of the OS.

Many large enterprise customers have said they will wait for the first service pack for Vista to deploy the software across their companies. Some were expecting SP1 before the end of the year after Microsoft Senior Vice President Bob Muglia said in a published report last November it would be released with Windows Server, code-named Longhorn, due by the end of 2007.

Q&A with Kingston NAND flash director, Darwin Chen

Despite its relatively late presence in the NAND flash sector, Kingston Technology, which is well known for its DRAM module business, sees its late presence as giving the company a clearer direction to pursue – that of the mainstream. The company's strategy seems to be paying off as evident from Kingston's rising role in the NAND flash sector.

We successfully built up in a short time our brand name in key regions that we had DRAM business. In 2003, our sales in NAND flash were US$80 million and this amount rocketed by almost ten times in 2006. We aim to achieve sales of US$1 billion in 2007. Although we don't have a concrete sales projection at the moment, the US$1 billion goal is achievable

Nvidia Readies Hybrid SLI Technology

There is always a trade-off between power consumption and performance in the world of 3D graphics cards. If one solution delivers high framerate per second, it most probably consumes significant amount of power, whereas another, which power consumption is minimal, cannot offer really high performance. But Nvidia recently announced that its new technology will meet low power consumption with high performance.

Even though Nvidia’s multi-GPU SLI technology enables significant performance increases, it also boosts power consumption, which means additional heat and higher noise levels. In this case, hybrid SLI’s power saving mode will allow to disable two high-performance graphics boards, such as Nvidia GeForce 8800-series when their 3D graphics firepower is not needed, Nvidia explained. The same mode will allow to integrate higher-performance graphics cores into notebooks without sacrificing battery life, as in case of battery operation only IGP will be used.

Sony PSP Firmware Upgrade Boost Processor Speed

Sony has released the latest firmware update for its PSP handheld console that will boost the its processor's clock speed from 266MHz to 333MHz. Most people didn't even know their processor was rated this fast. Big props to Sony for allowing this "unlock" for their handhelds.

Analysts say 'Manhunt 2' suspension could boost interest

The decision by Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. to suspend distribution of the violent video game "Manhunt 2" could actually end up boosting demand from curious gamers, industry analysts said Friday.

"It's free publicity," Sebastian said. "Consumer backlash is a risk but at the end of the day if it's rated `M' the retailers will take it." Added Rick Munarriz, a senior analyst with The Motely Fool: "If anything, with this suspension there's going to be a demand for it because of the controversy." Investors also seemed unfazed as Take-Two shares rose 21 cents, or 1 percent, to $20.82 in trading Friday.

IBM pushes 32-nm chips with BASF

IBM will work with the German chemical company BASF Group to produce a new generation of chips with feature sizes of 32 nanometers, the companies said Friday.

IBM is also using the new deal to ratchet up competition with Intel, which plans to bring its own 32nm architecture chips to market by 2009. The two companies have been locked in an increasingly public race to design faster chips since they both picked the same day in January to issue news releases about advances in "high-k metal gate" technology. That approach employs rare materials to construct smaller, more efficient transistors than the silicon dioxide used in modern chips.

Take-Two's 'Manhunt' Gets Manhandled - Adult Only Rating

Video-game publisher Take-Two Interactive is on the hot seat again. Two years after it faced a barrage of criticism from consumer advocates and even Sen. Hillary Clinton for hidden graphic pornographic content in its Grand Theft: Auto San Andreas game, the company is undergoing a fresh round of scrutiny in another one of its games, Manhunt 2.

U.S. game certification agency, Entertainment Software Rating Board, has rated Manhunt 2 "Adults Only," or appropriate for, and with sales limited to, users 18 years and older. That's the strictest rating the board can issue, and it's accompanied by a content descriptor: "Titles in this category may include prolonged scenes of intense violence and/or graphic sexual content and nudity."

AT&T quietly introduces $10 DSL plan

Without any sort of fanfare, AT&T Inc. has started offering a broadband Internet service for $10 a month, half the price of its cheapest advertised plan. The service provides download speeds of up to 768 kilobits per second and upload speeds of up to 128 kbps, matching AT&T's $19.95 plan. The agreement with the FCC required the company to offer the plan for at least 2 1/2 years. Coe said he could not comment on future advertising plans for the offer.

The $10 offer is available to customers in the 22-state AT&T service region, which includes former BellSouth areas, who have never had AT&T or BellSouth broadband, spokesman Michael Coe confirmed Monday. Local phone service and a one-year contract are required. The modem is free. The agreement with the FCC required the company to offer the plan for at least 2 1/2 years.

IBM to unveil stream computing system

IBM is introducing a high-performance computer system that is intended to rapidly analyze data as it streams in from many sources, increasing the speed and accuracy of decision making in fields as diverse as security surveillance and Wall Street trading.

IBM deems its System S research project ready to make its way into the marketplace. The planned announcement to the Wall Street group is the beginning of its effort to find industry partners. The initial system runs on about 800 microprocessors, though it can scale up to tens of thousands as needed, IBM said. The most notable step, researchers say, lies in the System S software, which enables software applications to split up tasks like image recognition and text recognition, and then reassemble the pieces of the puzzle into an answer.

AMD pushes new naming scheme - Confused Yet?

AMD is preparing to replace its current processor numbering scheme for desktop processors with a new naming scheme which combines two letters and a four-digit number, according to Leslie Sobon, director of product and brand management in AMD. AMD's new naming scheme will start with a letter to indicate the product level; G represents premium product, B represents intermediate product and L represents value product. A second letter will indicate the product's power consumption, with P representing over 65W, S around 65W and E less than 65W, noted Sobon.

The first digit of the proceeding four-digit number will indicate the product family; 1000 represents Sempron/Athlon single-core, 2000 represents Athlon dual-core, 6000 represents Phenom dual-core and 7000 represents Phenom quad-core. The second digit indicates relative core frequencies within the product family while the two remaining digits will be used for the future upgrade functions, pointed out Sobon.

Intel Says No Special Pricing for China

Intel Corp. Wednesday dismissed reports it plans to change its pricing policy and set different prices for processors sold in China. The new processor packaging, in Chinese, will be introduced on June 20 with boxed versions of the Pentium Dual-Core E2160 and E2140, which run at clock speeds of 1.8GHz and 1.6GHz, respectively. Safari for Windows Hacked Within Hours

It took a matter of hours for hackers to exploit more than half a dozen bugs and vulnerabilities in the beta browser for Windows. Many security researchers are blaming Apple's "hostile attitude towards security researchers" for the problems. Whatever the cause, you might want to think carefully before installing Safari for Windows.

First off the mark was David Maynor of Errata Security, who posted notice of a bug about two hours after Apple made Safari 3 available for Windows. By the end of the day, Maynor had racked up six bugs. Four could be exploited to crash the browser and/or PC in a denial of service; the other two, Maynor claimed, were remote execution vulnerabilities. "I can't speak for anybody else, but the bugs found in the beta copy of Safari on Windows work on the production copy on OS X as well," he said in a posting on the Errata site. "The exploit is robust mostly thanks to the lack of any kind of advanced security features in [Mac] OS X."
