Nvidia to be the first TSMC customer to run 55nm designs

With Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) announcing its readiness to begin production on 55nm process, sources at Taiwan motherboard makers noted that Nvidia is very likely to be the first customer to introduce production on this half node geometry.

Given its long established ties with TSMC, Nvidia started pilot runs on 55nm in early 2007 and samples should be available for customers in the second half of 2007, the sources detailed. The graphics chip maker should introduce 55nm in volume production in the first quarter of 2008, the sources added. A Chinese-language Commercial Times report also cited sources at equipment makers as saying that AMD has also started pilot runs on 55nm. Chips fabricated on 55nm are to hit the market in early 2008.

AMD pushes IT automation - SIMFIRE

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) released a software tool Monday that could allow hardware and software vendors to meet a new industry standard for IT management and security.

Technology vendors can use AMD's SIMFIRE to test whether their products meet a standard called DASH, for desktop and mobile architecture for system hardware. The Distributed Management Task Force Inc. unveiled the new DASH specification on Thursday as a replacement for the four-year-old Alert Standard Format (ASF). This jumble of acronyms is important to IT managers because the new standard will allow them to manage a diverse pool of corporate computing gear even if it includes desktops and notebooks made by various vendors, said Margaret Lewis, director of commercial solutions at AMD.

Google Beats Belgian Lawsuit Claiming That Google Linked to Cracks

A Belgian court dismissed a lawsuit filed by a company that said a feature for Google Inc.'s search engine offers up password-cracking tools and serial numbers to unlock their software.

The lawsuit, filed in May 2006, sought to make Google modify Suggest to not offer up piracy-related terms but did not seek financial damages. On March 1, the Commercial Court in Leuven, Belgium, dismissed the suit, saying Google can't be found liable for finding Web pages that may be involved in illegal activity based on search terms. The court also rejected an argument the Suggest feature offered a misleading advertisement, since that's not the intended function of Suggest, said Trevor Callaghan, Google's senior product counsel for Europe.

Judge halts patent case against Palm

In a preliminary victory for Palm, a federal judge halted proceedings Thursday related to a patent infringement lawsuit brought against it by NTP. The ruling, handed down by Judge James R. Spencer of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, essentially means Palm can continue to sell products in question--the line of Treo smart phones, the Palm VII, Palm i700 and Palm Tungsten.

All additional discovery, motions and depositions were also halted until the PTO rules on the validity of NTP's patents. Palm originally filed its motion to stay the proceedings on January 31. "We are extremely pleased with the court's decision to grant a stay. We hope and expect that the PTO's review of NTP's patents will confirm the decision of the examiners to reject them all and so avert the need for further litigation of this matter," said Mary Doyle, Palm's senior vice president and general counsel, in a statement.

Rumor: Apple to postpone Leopard to support Windows Vista

Apple is expected to launch its next generation Leopard operating system (OS) in April, but according to industry sources, the release of the new OS will be postponed to October to allow Apple to make Leopard support Windows Vista through an integrated version of its Boot Camp software. This would be an interesting situation if it holds true!

he sources pointed out that the launch delay is not due to software design problems with Leopard but instead is attributed to Apple's plan to have its new OS support Windows Vista through an integrated version of Boot Camp. Boot Camp is an Apple software application that currently assists in the installation of Windows XP on computers using Apple's latest OS. The company hopes with support for Vista, Mac computers using the new OS can grab more market share, according to the sources.

U.S. judge blocks 1998 online porn law

A federal judge on Thursday dealt another blow to government efforts to control Internet pornography, striking down a 1998 U.S. law that makes it a crime for commercial Web site operators to let children access "harmful" material.

In the ruling, the judge said parents can protect their children through software filters and other less restrictive means that do not limit the rights of others to free speech. Technology experts said parents now have more serious concerns than Web sites with pornography. For instance, the threat of online predators has caused worries among parents whose children use social-networking sites such as News Corp.'s MySpace.

Google Takes Click Fraud Action

Google is experimenting with a new way for advertisers to pay for listings. The company said late Tuesday that its new pay-per-action, or PPA, model allows advertisers to specify how much they would pay Google for attracting users who go on to do certain things at a Web site they find through a Google search.

The PPA system would build upon the highly popular pay-per-click, or PPC, system Google currently offers. In the PPC model, advertisers specify how much they are willing to pay for each user that clicks through to their site. In both systems, advertisers pay only for ads that are clicked on. One appeal of the PPA model is that it could cut down on click fraud, where competitors click on links in order to drain advertising budgets. Google's test is reportedly limited to about 75 Web sites and 75 advertisers thus far.

Computing pioneer John Backus dies - Fortran

John Backus, whose development of the Fortran programming language in the 1950s changed how people interacted with computers and paved the way for modern software, has died. He was 82.

Backus' early work at IBM included computing lunar positions on the balky, bulky computers that were state of the art in the 1950s. But he tired of hand-coding the hardware, and in 1954 he got his bosses to let him assemble a team that could design an easier system. The result, Fortran, short for Formula Translation, reduced the number of programming statements necessary to operate a machine by a factor of 20.

ATI R600XTX Scores Just 200 Points Higher Than The 8800GTX on 3DMark06

The guys over at VR-Zone have published some benchmarking numbers of what they claim is a retail R600 graphics card that is codenamed the Dragonhead 2. They also talk about the poor 65nm yields and claim that just 20,000 pieces will be available by the middle of April. With drivers that are still under development the card was able to score 200 points higher than the mature GeForce 8800GTX, but what will happen when NVIDIA bumps up the speed on their cards?

we got hold of some preliminary benchmarks figures of the R600 XTX card with core clock at 800MHz vs a GeForce 8800 GTX card. Using a Core 2 Extreme 2.93GHz processor on an Intel 975X board, the 3DMark06 score at 1600x1200 resolution is 97xx on the R600XTX compared to 95xx on the 8800GTX. Seems like R600XTX is running slightly faster than 8800GTX on the early release of drivers for R600. AMD is still working hard on the drivers and there are some more performance left to unlock. However, the DX10 benchmarking war between ATi and NVIDIA has not started yet. The targeted display driver version for launch in May is 8.361 or later (Catalyst 7.4 or 7.5).

Study Shows Video racing games may spur risky driving

People who play car racing video games may be more prone to drive recklessly and get into accidents, according to a study that adds to evidence that video games can influence the behavior of some players. I would have to agree with them, but since I don't have an unlimited budget I tend to not hit trees, buildings, people or other cars trying to get around them!

The researchers first questioned 198 men and women. Those who played the games most often were more likely to report engaging in aggressive and risky driving and getting in auto accidents. Those who played these games less often reported driving more cautiously, the researchers said. The researchers then studied 68 men and found those who played even one racing game took more risks afterward in traffic situations on a computer simulator than those who played another type of game.

It was a tale of two companies in the semiconductor industry in 2006, with leading chip supplier Intel suffering a revenue decline, while rival AMD nearly doubled its sales, according to iSuppli. Everyone expected this, but the technology industry is used to events like this.

For US microprocessor giant Intel, 2006 was the worst of times, as its global semiconductor revenue dropped by 11.1% from 2005," said Dale Ford, vice president of market intelligence for iSuppli. "The revenue decline, which was due to Intel's bleak performance in its core PC microprocessor and flash-memory businesses, erased nearly all of the company's sales gains from its strong year in 2005. Intel's 2006 revenue of US$31.5 billion was less than half a percentage point higher than its sales in 2004.

Anticlimactic end to HP case - Charges Dropped

In dropping felony charges against former Hewlett-Packard Chairwoman Patricia Dunn over the HP spying scandal, the state of California acknowledged Wednesday that despite the bravado and bluster of its charges, it just didn't have a very strong case.

After weeks of behind-the-scenes negotiations among prosecutors and defense attorneys, the state dropped all four felony charges against Dunn, who was vilified for starting a spying operation on her board. California Attorney General Jerry Brown, who inherited a case that was filed Oct. 4 by then-Attorney General Bill Lockyer, also agreed to reduce the four felony charges against each of the three remaining defendants to one misdemeanor each.
