Nokia delays Ovi gaming service launch to early 2008
Nokia has again pushed back the launch of its gaming service N-gage due to delays in software testing, a spokesman said on Thursday, in the latest blow to the Internet services ambitions of the world's top cellphone maker. The gaming service, together with a music shop and mapping services, is one of the cornerstones of Nokia's drive into mobile Internet services under its new "Ovi" brand.

Nokia has also pushed into next year expansion of its digital music store offering. Also Warner Music Group Corp has been withholding content from Nokia's only store in Britain. At the same time it has signed up Vodafone, Telefonica and Telecom Italia for Ovi. Nokia unveiled the gaming service in August, saying at the time it would be available globally in November. But in November it was delayed into December.

NASA To Build Space Ship to Mars in New Orleans - Orion
The route to the moon and perhaps to Mars now goes through New Orleans -- and the detour couldn't come at a better time in the city's struggle to rebuild its shattered economy after Hurricane Katrina. Bethesda, Maryland-based Lockheed Martin will build the Orion crew module at the 43-acre plant in Michoud. Chicago-based Boeing Co. will be building the $1.13 billion upper stage of the Ares I launch rocket and the rocket's $799.5 million navigation and control system there.

The outlook is much brighter now that three contracts associated with NASA's Constellation program have landed this year and last at Michoud. James Bray, director of Lockheed Martin's Orion project at Michoud, called the facility "a sleeping giant" for the New Orleans economy. The first test flight of Orion will occur in 2014, and astronauts could return to the moon by late 2019 or 2020 with possible later missions to Mars, NASA says.

Russia launches final satellites for its own GPS
Russia successfully launched a rocket on Tuesday carrying the last three satellites to complete a navigation system to rival America's GPS. The military-run GLONASS mapping system works over most of Russia and is expected to cover the globe by the end of 2009, once all its 24 navigational satellites are operating.
Work on GLONASS -- or Global Navigation Satellite System -- began in the Soviet Union in the mid-1970s to give its armed forces exact bearings around the world. The collapse of the Russian economy in the late 1990s drained funds and the plans withered, but President Vladimir Putin has ensured the project is now being lavishly funded from a brimming government budget. Officials said GLONASS would mainly be used alongside the U.S. global positioning system, which Washington can switch off for civilian subscribers, as it did during recent military operations in Iraq.

AMD to launch triple-core Phenom CPUs in March 2008
AMD has recently adjusted its triple-core CPU model numbers and launch dates, according to sources at motherboard makers. AMD will launch two B2 stepping triple-core CPUs, Phenom 8600 and 8400 in March of next year, while in the second quarter, the company will launch three more models, Phenom 8700, 8650 and 8450.
The Phenom 8400 and 8600 will feature core frequencies of 2.1GHz and 2.3GHz, respectively, while the Phenom 8700 will clock at 2.4GHz. Phenom 8650 and 8450 will be based on B3 stepping cores, and will have frequencies of 2.3GHz and 2.1GHz, respectively. All five CPUs will have a 95W TDP. The high price/performance ratio of the triple-core CPUs could force Intel to cut prices of its quad-core products which could cause higher-end models to cut into sales of lower-end CPUs, noted the sources. However, AMD could also face the same problem, they added.

Wikia search to launch Jan. 7 - Will it Challenge Google?
Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has set Jan. 7 as the launch date for an open-source search project that eventually hopes to challenge Google and other established players.
The Wikia Search project has assembled the basic technologies for a search engine, including a search application, search algorithm and Web crawler. The project will allow technology enthusiasts to help filter sites and rank search results, using a community model akin to that of Wikipedia. The idea is to challenge the established players by offering a search service that is more transparent to end users, meaning they can see how search results are arrived at. Wales has described Yahoo and Google as opaque services that don't explain how results are arrived at.

Vonage and AT&T settle patent dispute
Digital phone service Vonage said on Friday it has settled a patent dispute with AT&T. Vonage did not disclose the nature of the settlement, which it said occurred on November 7. The settlement was finalized on Friday.
Vonage was hit by a string of patent suits since going public in May 2006. It settled a suit with Sprint Nextel and another one with Verizon Communications Inc in October. AT&T sued the company, accusing it with using packet-based telephony products, which allows voice conversations to be carried over the Internet, based on products that use technology covered by AT&T patents.

4G inches closer with Nokia Siemens tests
The fourth generation of mobile broadband has moved closer to reality, following fresh trials by Nokia Siemens Networks. Nokia Siemens Networks' tests, announced last week, involved Long Term Evolution (LTE), a potential successor to 3G. Offering theoretical data rates of up to 173 megabits per second, LTE is in something of a race to market with mobile WiMax, only promises which around 70Mbps but has a significant head start. The fastest currently available mobile broadband, HSDPA, offers around 7.2Mbps.
In its announcement, Nokia Siemens Networks said it had completed the world's first multiuser field trial of LTE in an urban environment. The trial, which was in Berlin, utilized 20MHz of bandwidth in the 2.6GHz spectrum, which is set for a hotly contested auction in the U.K. next year. "(The trial confirmed) that LTE performance requirements can be met using 3GPP standardized technologies and it realized data rates of more than 100Mbps over distances of several hundred meters, while maintaining excellent throughput at the edge of typical urban mobile radio cells," the company's statement read.

AMD Phenom CPUs to see further delays - TLB Erratum Again
AMD has recently notified its partners that the launch of higher-end quad-core Phenom processors, including the 9700 and 9900, will be postponed to the second quarter of 2008 from the original schedule of early 2008, according to sources at motherboard makers. However, whether AMD's triple-core Toliman series CPUs will also see delay will be the key decision for the company, since Toliman offers a high price/performance ratio compared with Intel's quad-core CPUs. A delay for Toliman will hurt AMD the most, noted the sources. Legit Reviews just wrote a little piece on the AMD TLB issue, so check it out.
The sources commented that the reason for the delay of 9700 and 9900 is because AMD has not yet been able to solve the translation lookaside buffer (TLB) erratum found in the chips. However, they added in saying that, in the long-term, AMD's decision is correct since pushing products that are not ready will only hurt the company more. AMD declined to comment on this report. The company pointed out that it has not made any official announcement regarding a delay of the mentioned CPUs.

Forbes Company Of The Year: Nvidia
FORBES has named NVIDIA Company of the Year today for all of 2007. This is a huge honor for NVIDIA and they have made themselves known this past year. When I wear something with the name NVIDIA on it people I don't even know ask me what games I play.
In a PC industry racked by deflation, Nvidia has managed to increase its gross margin from 29% in 2004 to a current 46%. In the fiscal year ending in a few weeks Nvidia will gross $4 billion, up 33%, and net $900 million, up 50%. Since Huang took the company public in 1999, Nvidia's shares have risen 21-fold, edging out even the mighty Apple over the same time period. Such accomplishments, over the last 12 months and the past five years, earn Nvidia the title of FORBES' Company of the Year.

Toshiba, Sharp form LCD pact amid industry shake-up
Japanese electronics conglomerate Toshiba said it will buy large liquid crystal displays from Sharp as part of an alliance likely to help spark a realignment of the flat panel TV industry. Under the pact, Toshiba will procure liquid crystal display (LCD) panels from a 380 billion yen ($3.4 billion) factory being built by Sharp in western Japan, and then use them in LCD TVs larger than 32 inches to be sold under its own brand.
Toshiba, which currently procures panels from IPS Alpha and LG. Philips, said it aimed to meet 40 percent of its demand for LCD modules in the business year starting April 2010 with supplies from Sharp. At the same time, Sharp hopes to satisfy 50 percent of its total demand for system LSI semiconductors from Toshiba.

IBM buys in-memory database company Solid
IBM is buying Solid Information Technology, a maker of high-performance databases and a close partner of IBM rival MySQL. Solid makes an embedded database with in-memory database engine, which means it can store and retrieve data from main memory, giving faster performance than traditional disk-based systems. That makes it popular for applications that require very fast processing times, such as routing calls in a phone network or trading stocks. Solid's customers include Cisco Systems, Siemens, TeliaSonera, and Nokia, according to its Web site.
IBM agreed to acquire the company for an undisclosed sum and expects the deal to close in the first quarter of 2008, IBM announced Friday. It said the deal will enhance its database line-up by adding real-time data access capabilities. IBM rival Oracle acquired an in-memory database two years ago, from TimesTen. The IBM acquisition may be seen as a setback for MySQL, since it marks the loss of independence of another company that makes a high-performance transaction engine for MySQL's database.

iSuppli Trims 2008 Semiconductor Forecast
The research group says concerns about the U.S. economy will reduce market revenues in the first half of 2008. While the global semiconductor market is expected to grow in 2008, concerns about the U.S. economy—especially the sub-prime mortgage crisis—is leading market research company iSuppli to reduce its revenue forecast for next year.
In a Dec. 20 report, iSuppli now reports that worldwide semiconductor revenue will grow 7.5 percent in 2008, to $291.4 billion. In September, the company had called for a revenue increase of 9.3 percent. If the semiconductor market slows, then iSuppli predicted that the sales of a wide range of hardware, including desktops, laptops and handheld devices, could also lag in 2008. For most of 2007, PC revenue increased thanks to both enterprise buyers and consumers buying notebooks in record numbers and a renewed interest in lower-priced desktops.

AMD CrossFireX Graphics still a go on Intel P45 chipsets
Intel has received an license to support CrossFireX on its upcoming P45 chipsets, according to sources at motherboard makers. This is good news as support was actually up in the air. The cooperation between the two CPU makers is expected to put pressure on Nvidia, added the sources.
Although ATI originally said it would be open to licensing CrossFire to those who wanted to, the acquisition of the company by AMD, followed by the resignations of Dave Orton and Rick Hegberg, former CEO and vice president of worldwide sales of ATI, respectively, sparked concerns among motherboard makers that AMD would completely cut its cooperation with Intel.

AMD Phenom Processors Too Slow - Intel Holds Off New Processors
Digitimes is reporting that Intel is going to delay the launch of three 45nm quad-core processors because there is no threat on the performance from from AMD. The three CPUs that Intel plans to delay are the Core 2 Quad Q9300, Q9450 and Q9550. These are the processors many enthusiasts have been waitng for as they are sure to be friendly on the pocket and overclock like no other.
Intel has already notified its partners that it will push back the launch of the three CPUs to February or March next year, depending on AMD's schedule for triple-core and the upcoming Phenom CPUs. Launching the CPUs now will not benefit Intel much in its battle with AMD, while they could cause damage to Intel's 65nm quad-core CPUs, therefore the company has decided it is in no rush to release new products until AMD is able to present more of a threat.

Samsung said to be slashing graphics memory pricing
Samsung Electronics is unloading its graphics memory inventory by offering prices that are much lower than competitors' production costs for the segment, according to industry sources. Samsung's low-price move for graphics memory comes as a further blow to Taiwan's DRAM makers, which are already suffering from plunging prices in the commodity DRAM market. Graphics memory provides higher margins than commodity DRAM, but Samsung's move may now trigger a free fall for graphics memory prices.
The sources claim that Samsung 256Mb (16Mbx16) DDR2 is selling for only US$0.50. Other DRAM makers think that the price is unbelievably low, as typical costs for this type of DDR2 graphics memory chip, from the wafer to back-end production, would usually run about US$1.40.

Apple Extends iPhone World Tour - NTT DoCoMo Approached in Japan
Following much fanfare in Europe's largest consumer markets, Apple is laying the groundwork to launch its iPhone in Asia. The company is reportedly talking to Japan's top tier telecom carriers about selling its popular multimedia phone for use on their networks. A report by The Wall Street Journal says Apple has approached NTT DoCoMo, Japan's largest carrier, and Softbank, currently the No. 3 player.
The move would take the iPhone to one of the world's most tech savvy populations. Japanese consumers are avid gadget fans, especially when it comes to pricey multimedia cell phones. Many store credit card and banking information in their phones, which can then be used to make purchases by swiping the phone in front of sensors at cash registers. The challenge for Apple is to get Japanese consumers, who are used to fast mobile Internet connections, interested in a phone that operates on a slower 2G network.

Nintendo sees strong DS sales, frowns on Wii bundles
Nintendo, already struggling with shortages of its Wii video game console, is also seeing signs of higher-than-expected demand for its DS handheld device, a top executive said on Monday. Nintendo, which is striving to meet Wii demand more than a year after the machine first went on sale, had also advised retailers that it did not approve of the practice of bundling the consoles with extra games and accessories and selling the package at a higher price.
"The DS continues to perform exceptionally well, with some retailers voicing concerns about DS inventory going into the holiday," Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, told Reuters in an interview. The DS has been the best-selling piece of gaming hardware this year, moving 1.5 million units in November, according to market research firm NPD.

Apple patches keep coming: 31 Patches Released
Apple kept its rush of year-end security patches coming Monday, issuing a flurry of fixes for its Mac OS X operating system and the test version of its Safari browser. Monday's patches included a whopping 31 updates for the Apple operating system. The Mac OS X patches fix components ranging from the Address Book and iChat software to under-the-covers operating system components such as ColorSync, the IO Storage Family, and the Perl, Python and Ruby programming languages.
Most of these flaws theoretically could be exploited by attackers to run unauthorized software on the Mac, although some of them had other security implications, such as allowing an attacker to gain access to sensitive information or download files to the computer without authorization. These updates are for the Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5 operating systems, known as Tiger and Leopard, respectively.

NVIDIA 780i SLI Motherboard Review Coming Soon
NVIDIA released their 780i SLI motherboard this morning, but you might have noticed we don't have a review of it posted. We got the board last week while we were in New York for AMD's Analyst Day and when we got to loading up the Operating System we found our system was having some issues. It seemed to work fine with 2GB of memory, but when 4GB of memory was used in either 2 x 2GB or 4 x 1GB configurations we were left with numerous blue screens of death and warm booting issues. We have contacted NVIDIA and have a new board on the way. Right now we are benchmarking the board with a 2 x 2GB kit of OCZ Reaper X PC2-6400 memory, but it's tough as we reboot between benchmark runs. Here is a picture of the 780i system that is giving us such a hard time.

Just in time for the big guy's annual holiday sleigh ride, NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA), the world leader in visual computing technologies, today introduced the Company's next-generation NVIDIA nForce® 780i SLI media and communications processor (MCP), designed specifically for 1333FSB Intel QX9650 (Yorkfield) processors. The new nForce 780i SLI MCP brings a multitude of new functionality to Intel platforms, including support for the new Enthusiast System Architecture specification and PCI Express Gen 2.0. It is also the first motherboard solution to support the Company's new 3-way SLI™ technology, the industry's preeminent multi-GPU platform solution based on NVIDIA® GeForce® graphics processing units.

Intel reportedly to postpone X48 chipset launch due to X38
Intel was originally going to launch the X48 chipset in January next year, however the company may postpone the chipset launch by 1-2 months because one of the first-tier motherboard makers still holds a large volume of X38 chipset inventory, according to sources at motherboard makers.
The motherboard maker fears that the X48 chipset will slow down clearance of its X38 chipset inventory and has negotiated with Intel to delay the launch of its X48 chipset. However the delay is expected to hurt makers who do not have an overstock X38 chipsets. Each motherboard maker has already received X48 A1 test samples from Intel and sent back 10 motherboards for debugging. The original mass production schedules were set between the end of 2007 and beginning of 2008. In addition to DDR3 1600 memory support, the X48 chipset will also support Intel XMP (extreme memory profile) technology, to automatically optimize performance with memory modules that support XMP.

Nintendo Says Wii Production Won't Meet U.S. Holiday Demand
Nintendo Co., unable to meet holiday demand for its Wii video-game console, will offer rain checks through retailer GameStop Corp. to shoppers who can't find one before Christmas. Plants in Asia are running at capacity to make 1.8 million players a month, a rate the Kyoto, Japan-based company plans to maintain after the Christmas shopping season, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said this past week on a conference call.
Nintendo has increased capacity twice from an initial 1 million a month in November 2006. Nintendo will ship 17.5 million consoles worldwide in the year ending in March, Fils- Aime said. ``We're doing everything we can,'' Fils-Aime said. ``We understand and sympathize with the frustration of consumers. We get calls, I get personal calls, from consumers asking why we don't just manufacture more. If it were that easy, we would.''

Confirming what many in the chip world had suspected for some time, CEO Hector Ruiz and other AMD execs fessed up that bugs in its new quad-core Barcelona server and Phenom desktop chips will delay these key next-generation technologies. The fastest versions will be delayed at least three months.
The technical problems will delay general availability of the fastest version of the chips for three or four months. Customers willing to settle for slower clock speeds will be able to get the processors sooner; for example, AMD will ship a 2 gigahertz version of the Barcelona first, instead of the expected 2.5 gigahertz speed. In either case, the chips will be close to a year late; the original target date was the first quarter of 2007.

Google working on ad-based Web encyclopedia
- Google Inc. is working on a new Internet encyclopedia that will consist of material submitted by people who want to be identified as experts and possibly profit from their knowledge. The concept, outlined late Thursday in a posting on Google's Web site, poses a potential challenge to the nonprofit Wikipedia, which has drawn upon the collective wisdom of unpaid, anonymous contributors to emerge as a widely used reference tool.
The Googlepedia, as some observers are already calling the new offering, will differ from Wikipedia by identifying who wrote each article and striving to reward the authors by giving them a chance to make money from Google's lucrative advertising network. Critics say Wikipedia's cloak of anonymity has made its articles more vulnerable to mischief and other abuses that have led to inaccuracies.

Activision sued over 'Guitar Hero' for Wii - Mono Sound!
Activision is quickly finding out what it means to have the holiday season's top-selling video game: Lots of lawsuits. Already faced with legal threats from a rock group over a cover of a song that appears in Guitar Hero, Activision has now been named in a class-action suit that alleges that the company engaged in "deceptive and unlawful" conduct by selling the Wii version of Guitar Hero III, which only outputs mono sound, not Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound as claimed on the box.
The suit, brought by plaintiff Samuel Livingston of San Diego and represented by the law firm KamberEdelson, LLC, "seeks actual damages, individual restitution, equitable relief, civil penalties, costs and expenses of litigation, including attorney's fees, and all further relief available." The suit claims that Activision has not rectified the problem for "any purchaser" of Guitar Hero III, nor has it taken steps to point out the issue to future purchasers. By noting that the game is still on store shelves this holiday, the suit alleges that Activision is continuing to engage in deceptive practices. Activision has said that it will voluntary replace the Wii discs with properly working versions, but not until 2008.

Intel said to increase chip market lead
Intel Corp., the world's top chipmaker, is set to increase its share of a growing global semiconductor chip market this year to 12.2 percent, research firm Gartner said on Friday.
Intel's revenue grew more than twice as fast as the market average, boosted by strong gains in laptop chip sales. Last year Intel's global market share was 11.6 percent. Among top vendors, Toshiba's revenue was expected to surge 28 percent in U.S. dollar terms, surpassing Texas Instruments, STMicroelectronics and Infineon. Of those three, only STM was able to slightly raise its revenue, Gartner said.
