AMD Black Edition CPU may not help AMD-based motherboard demand

Although AMD has launched the Black Edition Athlon 64 X2 5000+ CPU with an unlocked multiplier, some motherboard makers are taking a conservative view over whether the CPU will help win back market share. The 5000+ black edition processor is available online for $127, but that doesn't seem like it is enough to compete with the better performing Intel Core series of processors that are just a bit more. Bring on Phenom!

Some motherboard makers have no plans to adjust their current shipment proportions since they do not think the Black Edition CPUs will lead to any increase in demand for AMD motherboard, noted the sources. Currently, motherboard makers are putting their hopes on AMD's next-generation Phenom processors, but even so, they are not expecting to see any real boost in demand for a couple of months, noted the sources.

Intel Opens FAB 32 - First High-Volume 45nm Microprocessor Manufacturing Factory

Production of a new generation of microprocessors for PCs, laptops, servers and other computing devices officially began today inside of Intel Corporation's first high-volume 45 nanometer manufacturing factory in Chandler, Ariz. Fab 32 is Intel's sixth 300mm wafer factory and its second factory to produce 45nm chips. Intel first produced 45nm processors in its Oregon development facility, called D1D, in January and is now moving into high-volume production with the opening of Fab 32.

Called "Fab 32," the $3 billion factory will use Intel's innovative 45nm process technology based on Intel's breakthrough in "reinventing" certain areas of the transistors inside its processors to reduce energy leakage. The 45nm transistors use a Hafnium-based high-k material for the gate dielectric and metal materials for the gate, and are so small that more than 2 million can fit on the period at the end of this sentence. Millions of these tiny transistors will make up Intel's faster, more energy efficient lead- and halogen-free processors for PCs, laptops and servers, as well as ultra low-power processors for mobile Internet and consumer electronic devices, and low-cost PCs. The first of the company's 45nm processors is scheduled to be introduced on Nov. 12.

AMD CrossFireX - Quad CrossFire Gaming Closer To Reality

Rumor has it that CrossFireX is getting close its launch date as presentations and performance information is starting to leak like an old rusty pipe. Once the AMD 790FX chipset series is launched and the motherboards start to show up on the market next month, we should start to hear more on CrossFireX.

Quad Crossfire X is quoted as upwards of 3x performance, whilst triple Crossfire is quoted at about 2.5x. If we were being snarky, we'd point out to you that you can get 2.5x Crossfire performance simply by loading up with 8800s rather than 2900s. Rimshot please.

Quanta insists OLPC shipments still on track

Despite reports citing executives from the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) Foundation as saying that production would be delayed, Quanta Computer has said that shipments of its first batch of XO notebooks are still on track for November. So, who knows if our post yesterday is right or this one. Sounds like something is up though.

An October 23 Reuters report cited chief technology officer (CTO) Mary Lou Jepsen of the foundation as saying that OLPC was "scheduled to go into production at a Chinese factory in October, but it is now slated to begin by November 12". Jepsen pointed to the discovery of last-minute bugs as the reason for the delay. Quanta responded claiming no knowledge of the "last-minute bugs".

SanDisk Sues To Enforce Memory System Patents

SanDisk Corporation today announced the filing of three patent infringement actions against 25 companies that manufacture, sell and import USB flash drives, CompactFlash cards, multimedia cards, MP3/media players and/or other removable flash storage products. The companies include leading enthusiast brands Kingston Technology and Corsair Memory, which are two of the largest memory manufacturers in the world! It looks like this patent infringement is all about flash memory, but it's interesting to see companies like OCZ Technology and Super Talent not being named.

The actions, filed in the United States District Court in the Western District of Wisconsin and in the United States International Trade Commission (“ITC”), allege that the defendants have infringed various SanDisk system-level patents, and seek damages and a permanent injunction in the federal court actions, as well as a permanent exclusion order from the ITC banning importation of the products into the United States.

Microsoft drops all legal challenges against EU antitrust order

Microsoft Corp. said Wednesday it has withdrawn the two remaining legal challenges to an EU antitrust order that it now says it will obey. The world's largest software maker yielded to European Union regulators on Monday, when it promised to obey key parts of a 2004 monopoly abuse ruling upheld by an appeals court last month.

The software giant said it told the EU's appeals court on Wednesday that it was withdrawing an appeal against the 280.5 million euros ($357 million) fine that regulators imposed in July 2006 for not complying with an earlier demand that it share technical information with rivals. That order aimed to help IBM, Sun, Novell and Oracle make software for server computers that would work smoothly with Microsoft's Windows desktop operating system - found on 95 percent of all personal computers.

$188 laptop faces production delay, shortage

The $188 string-pulley-charged XO laptop was scheduled to go into production at a Chinese factory in October, but it is now slated to begin by November 12, said Mary Lou Jepsen, chief technology officer for the One Laptop per Child Foundation.

AT&T sues Vonage for Patent Infringement

AT&T filed a lawsuit against VoIP provider Vonage on Friday seeking damages for alleged patent infringement. In a filing with the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin, AT&T alleged that Vonage wilfully infringed an AT&T patent related to telephone systems that allow people to make VoIP calls using standard telephone devices.

In the legal filing, AT&T said it tried to reach an agreement with Vonage to license the patent, but failed, which forced the lawsuit. Vonage announced on Oct. 8 that it settled its suit with Sprint Nextel for $80 million. As part of that agreement, Vonage agreed to license VoIP patents from Sprint, including more than 100 patents covering technology for connecting calls from a traditional phone network to an IP network.

While Asustek Computer is optimistic about the outlook of the motherboard market for the fourth quarter, Gigabyte Technology and Micro-Star International (MSI) have a more conservative attitude, according to the companies.

Gigabyte predicted that its motherboard shipments are expected to drop 5-10% sequentially during the fourth quarter as back-to school and year-end holiday demand are not as strong as usual. Demand in the OEM market will remain flat while its own-brand market will drop slightly during the fourth quarter, the company estimated.

Western Digital Reaches Density Record - 520 Gb/in2 areal density

Western Digital Corp. today announced that it has achieved 520 Gb/in2 areal density – the hard drive industry's highest demonstrated density to date using continuous media. The company revealed the milestone this week at the Perpendicular Magnetic Recording Conference in Tokyo after an earlier demonstration in California. Now we just have to wait till 2010, so we can buy one!

Following WD's growing investments in technology the past five years, the company achieved 520 Gb/in2 using its own perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR)/tunneling magneto-resistive (TuMR) head technology. This level of density produces a 3.5-inch hard drive storing 640 GB-per-platter and single hard drive capacities as large as 3 TB. Based on the industry's current density growth rate of more than 40 percent per year, those capacities are expected to be available in the 2010 timeframe.
