The $100 Laptop Seen in Different Colors

Available in fetching orange and yellow, or shades of blue and green, here's the $100 laptop, which was unveiled at the Seven Countries Task Force Meeting yesterday. Almost immediately, pictures of the machine hit the net. Still looks a little too cheap for my tastes and why do they always show pictures of minorites on the displays of these laptops? Why not show the OS or an educational application for crying out loud. People aren't going to use these as $100 picture viewers.

Still, OLPC is concentrating minds on supplying ICT needs for poor people in developing countries. Many analysts expect the mobile phone to be the internet access of choice in developing world. They are cheaper than PCs - and there are far more of them. And new PCs prices are coming down all the time - although admittedly, the day when Dell or HP or Lenovo sell a new laptop for $100 is some years away. Microsoft is taking a different tack, by offering cheaper software licences to poor countries, and by offering a different mode of consumption. This week it announced its ideas for a pay-as-you-go PC, specifically for developing countries.

Quiet DRAM market show signs of an upside

DRAM transactions on the spot market were notably quiet, with both DDR and DDR2 prices remaining flat. The market for NAND appeared vibrant amid earlier price rises and capacity adjustment by the leading players, with 2Gbit NAND continuing to lead price growth. With AMD's just released AM2 platform we should find that it will stimulate the demand for 800MHz memory in the coming weeks when suppies start to run low at the memory companies.

DRAMeXchange notes that any risk of a price downside should be limited, amid a limited supply of DDR on the spot market. Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC) was said to have reduced its supply. Motherboard makers have only a constrained supply, after posting a bullish outlook for the period through July. DDR2 is showing only limited price fluctuations, but overall demand for DDR2 remains weak, DRAMeXchange stated. The firm anticipates that a new AMD CPU, with support for DDR2-667, should stimulate some "performance" users to upgrade their platforms and stimulate demand for DDR2.

Nintendo warns of weaker profits

Nintendo has posted a 19% drop in annual profits and warned that results for its current financial year will be weaker than previously expected. Nintendo needs to bring out the Wii console quick because at $199 it's bound to sell no matter how good the performance.

The firm's sales for the past financial year fell 1.2% to 509bn yen, hit by falling demand for its outgoing GameCube console and supporting games. Strong sales of its DS handheld and titles such as Nintendogs failed to make up for the shortfall. It is planning to launch the Wii console in the final quarter of the year, competing against Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3.

PC game spending hit $1.4 bln in US

U.S. spending on video games for personal computers hit $1.4 billion in 2005, according to an estimate released by market research firm NPD Group on Wednesday. Online subscriptions to PC games and gaming Web sites accounted for about $344 million of those annual sales, said the NPD.

Faster Internet connections are making it easier for consumers to play games online and to download game content that had once only been available in stores, said NPD, which last year began tracking online subscriptions. Subscriptions to play specific online titles -- such as "World of Warcraft" from Blizzard Entertainment and Vivendi Games -- reached roughly $292 million in 2005, with about 1.4 million paid subscribers.

Google to distribute online video ads

Google Inc. will begin distributing online video ads for the first time later this week, continuing the Internet search engine leader's effort to diversify beyond the static written messages that generate most of its profits. The video expansion, announced late Monday, will affect thousands of Web sites that rely on Google to post ads related to the surrounding material on a page. For instance, a news story about housing might prompt Google to display an ad for real estate agents.

Google isn't allowing the video ads to appear on its own Web site ? a heavily trafficked destination that produced 58 percent of its $2.25 billion in revenue during the first three months of this year. Despite that restriction, Google's push into online video advertising represents a significant step for the Mountain View, Calif.-based company as it explores new ways to propel its rapid earnings growth. Google began distributing graphical ads two years ago and during the past year has been dabbling in print and radio marketing.

Vonage Debut Turns Ugly - Currently Down 14 Percent

The Vonage IPO got off to a rocky start today, with shares falling 14% in furious trading. The Holmdel, N.J., Net calling shop priced its initial public offering late Tuesday at $17 a share, raising some $531 million. But Vonage tanked soon after Wednesday morning's opening, hitting $14.50 on the New York Stock Exchange with 21 million shares changing hands.

Vonage managed to accumulate 1.6 million users and booked $119 million in revenue in the first quarter ended in March. But to keep the top line growing, Vonage needs to spend a lot more money, which is among the reason it turned to the public market for financing. As one of the nation's biggest advertisers, Vonage has racked up massive marketing expenses. In the first quarter Vonage spent $88.3 million on marketing, up 59% from a year earlier. As of March 31, Vonage had an accumulated deficit of $467.4 million.

Are you ready for solid state storage?

Samsung is apparently, and it's quite amazing how low key they've kept the project. No sooner that the announcement was made that another was made that actual product would be available by June, for the Korean market anyway. The new NAND flash equiped laptops will feature 32GB of pure flash based storage. And all that while drawing significantly less power and putting out much less heat than traditional hard drives, not to mention being able to operate in complete silence.

The SSD reads 300 percent faster (53MB/s) and writes 150 percent quicker (28MB/s) than normal hard drives. As a result, multiple application programs can operate simultaneously and large volumes of data can be edited and reproduced more efficiently. The Microsoft Windows XP operating system will boot up 25-50% faster on the SSD than on other drives—good news for those in a hurry. Moreover, the typical 1.8-inch hard disk drive weighs around 50 grams; whereas the SSD is 20 to 30 grams lighter, depending on the package type.

US predicts busy hurricane season with 8-10 hurricanes

The 2006 Atlantic hurricane season will be very active, with up to 10 hurricanes, although not as busy as record-breaking 2005 here in the United States. This is big news as the hurricane season greatly impacts the pricing on everything when a big storm hits. I have to sit back and wonder how much of this is directly related to human-induced global warming...

"For the 2006 North Atlantic hurricane season, NOAA is predicting 13 to 16 named storms, with eight to 10 becoming hurricanes, of which four to six could become 'major' hurricanes of Category 3 strength or higher," said retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Symantec sues Microsoft for stealing trade secrets

Symantec Corp. sued software rival Microsoft Corp. on Thursday, accusing it of misappropriating trade secrets to develop its own competing features and products, including the next version of Windows. I have a strong feeling that Windows is not going to come out when scheduled date in 2007.

The lawsuit filed in federal court in Seattle charges the world's biggest software maker with misappropriating intellectual property and breach of contract related to a licensing deal with Veritas, which Symantec acquired last year. It also seeks an injunction that would block the further development, sale or distribution of Vista -- the already- delayed next version of Windows -- and other products until all Symantec intellectual property is removed.

Mosel Vitelic To Stop DRAM production

Mosel Vitelic has decided to stop DRAM production by the end of the first half of this year and gear up for the development of the solar cell market, according to company chairman ML Chen. Solar cell production is expected to be Mosel?s chief business by the fourth quarter of 2007, but until then pure-play foundry services for driver IC and power management (PWM) ICs will be the company?s major sources of revenues, Chen revealed during the company?s investors conference yesterday. On Wednesday morning, Creative shares rose as much as 9.3 percent to S$10.00 on thin volume, buoyed by news of the patent infringement suit, which relates to a system developed to organize and access songs. At midday, the stock was up 7.7 percent at S$9.85. Apple shares fell more than 4 percent on Tuesday in active trade on Nasdaq, due partly to the patent lawsuit and on concerns its business may be slowing. "The lawsuit will be a long process, and even if they win, any damages awarded will be a one-off gain. This does not change Creative's business fundamentals and the fact that there is nothing much to look forward to on the operations front."

H-P earnings up 51 percent

Hewlett-Packard Co.'s fiscal second-quarter profit rose 51 percent Tuesday as the printer and computer company benefitted from cost-cutting, gains in PC market share and higher revenue. This is a shocker to some, but expected after all the cost cutting H-P has done in recent months.

For the three months ended April 30, HP earned $1.46 billion, or 51 cents a share. Sales rose 5 percent to $22.6 billion.
