AMD intros three more dual core Opterons
As reported earlier, Intel are releasing their new dual Core Xeon's. Now AMD are fighting back with the release of 3 new Dual Core Cpu's.
CHIP FIRM AMD released more dual core Opterons as it continues its mission to beat up Intel on the server front. The members of the X80 line, the 280 and the 880, are both 2.4GHz 1MB chips. The 180, a 939 based one will be launched in 30 days, but the ones announced today are available now.

Intel's dual-core Xeon makes Dell debut
Dell are to release Dual Core Xeon servers. They will not ship until October but with HP, Sun and IBM all jumpping on the AMD bandwaggon, this can only mean good things for Intel. Intel are to release thier sucessor to the current Dual Core Xeons next year, codenamed "Bensley" which will allow for 1066FSB among other things.
Dell plans to announce Monday the first server to come with Intel's dual-core Xeon processor, a significant step in the allies' effort to catch up with technology from chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices. Dell is bringing the new 2.8GHz chip to all of its dual-processor servers and to two workstation models. The products will begin shipping in October, said Neil Hand, Dell's vice president of worldwide enterprise marketing. Until then, he said, Dell is only taking orders from customers who agree to hold details under wraps.

ATI goes fromTSMC to UMC for 90nm R-5XX orders
ATI Technologies has placed orders with United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) to produce its R521, RV531 and RV516 graphics processing units (GPUs) using 90nm technology, according to industry sources. I am worried about the comment on the low yield rates as LR is unable to confirm it.
On September 21, ATI announced that TSMC is in volume production of the Radeon X1800 (codenamed R520), Radeon X1600 (codenamed RV530) and Radeon X1300 (codenamed RV515) series chips. However, the sources also indicated that low yield rates at TSMC has given UMC an opportunity to win 90nm orders from ATI. UMC will enter volume production of the R521, RV531 and RV516 chips for ATI from the end of this year, the sources noted.

Microsoft Vista To Boost 256mb Graphics Card Sales
Microsoft Beta testers have recently confirmed that Windows Vista works best with 256MB video cards and Digitimes is reporting that the video card makers should see increased sales after the launch. With Microsoft Vista being launched late in 2006 and with new graphics technology (DirectX 10 and High Dynamic Range rendering) coming down the pipes we feel the upgrade is worth it with no matter what.
Windows Vista, Microsoft?s next generation OS, is expected to help graphics card makers see increased profits from rising high-end card demand, according to graphics card makers in Taiwan. As the Vista OS requires higher standard graphics cards, demand for high-end product lines are expected to heat up, indicated the makers. Systems featuring the Vista OS will need graphics processor units (GPUs) that supports 256MB of memory, said the makers, adding that the adoption of Microsoft?s upcoming OS will help the current high-end line migrate into the mainstream market within a shorter time.

Google is looking for an individual to oversee search and advertising technologies, called GoogleTV, that will ''enhance users' television viewing experience,'' according to a job posting at Google's Web site.

China sets new rules on Internet news
China set new regulations on Internet news content on Sunday, widening a campaign of controls it has imposed on other Web sites, such as discussion groups. The government stated that all news must "be directed toward serving the people and socialism and insist on correct guidance of public opinion for maintaining national and public interests."
"The state bans the spreading of any news with content that is against national security and public interest," the official Xinhua news agency said in announcing the new rules, which took effect immediately. Established news media needed permission to run a news Web site, it said. New operators had to register themselves with government information offices.

Kids urged to teach the elderly internet skills
Children are being encouraged to teach their grandparents to use the internet to help close the digital divide. With the internet becoming a place to file for emergency aid, shop, and keep in touch with loved ones it makes common sense to help our elders.
A special website has been launched with tools, advice and activities to assist children to help their grandparents to get the most from the internet. "With the internet becoming the communication tool of choice for fundamental services like medical information and education, the digitally excluded will be significantly disadvantaged when trying to access services and information," said BT head of digital inclusion, Mike Hughes.

Apple iPod Nano Users Cry Foul on Nano's Screen
Some owners of Apple Computer's new "impossibly small" iPod Nano are quickly finding out that the new iPod is delicate. Hundreds of complaints about the screens scratching, cracking, and/or failing are coming to light all over the web. One angry customer who's screen broke after four days of use started the site flawedmusicplayer.com and suggests that Apple recall the Nano. Trouble so soon?
"I don't really care if the case on my Nano gets scratched but my screen has scratched up so badly that all the images are starting to become distorted," Cason wrote, echoing the sentiment of many others in the discussion. "I have only carried it in my small pocket in my shorts and nothing is in there to scratch it. I still can't figure how the screen looks like it has been rubbed with sandpaper when the entire time it has been safe in my pocket (with absolutely no items)."

Abit to migrate half of its capacity to ECS by end of October
This is a pretty interesting and newsworthy event. First, its no secret that ABIT has been having financial difficulties for more than a year now. There were the ECS and Foxconn rumors swirling earlier this year. Second, ECs has just completely made itself over, going from bottom of the barrel bundles at Fry's to pretty nice products in a short period. I think this whole situation bears watching. ECS might be becoming more of a "player" in the enthusiat market than any of us realized.
Abit Computer plans to migrate half of its motherboard capacity, mostly entry-level production, to Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) by the end of October, according to the company. Production of Abit?s high-end segment will continue to be manufactured at its Suzhou plant in China before agreements with new contract makers are reached, said the company. Abit is in talks with several companies for a property transfer of its Suzhou plant. If transfer agreements are settled, the new owners of the plant will help Abit manufacture its high-end product line, the company noted. Abit is looking to clear total loans of NT$4.2 billion (US$128.7 million) by the end of this year, before a new board of directors takes over the company.

Ipod Nano costs $90 to produce?
The Inq. has an interesting article that reports the findings of the firm iSuppli and their analysis of the Ipod Nano. Out of their report comes the findings that the parts used in the Ipod Nano total about $90, with the NAND flash memory making up about 60% of the price. The Ipod Nano is Apple's newest product and utilizes flash based memory to create a small, yet powerful MP3 device.

Activision to increase game prices by $10
We just heard that Activision is going to increase the price on their game titles by US $10 to "keep up" with Microsoft's upcoming Xbox 360. Right now all the talk is about console titles, but PC titles are rumored to be in the mix also. With the economy the way it is now a $10 increase might do more harm than good for investors and gamers both.
Activision CEO Bobby Kotick is determined to raise prices on video games. But analysts and investors question whether consumers will play along. Expanding on comments he had made previously, Kotick said this week that his company plans to boost the wholesale prices $10 per unit on top-line title games for next-generation consoles, such as Microsoft's upcoming Xbox 360 -- those titles sell for roughly $50.

South Korea Plans to Build Combat Robot for Battlefield
It looks like future wars are going to be fought by humans and machines fighting side by side. South Korea has announced plans for a mobile combat robot that is designed to kick ass without any emotions involved. No word on what processors or hardware these will use. I'm not sure AMD or Intel would be willing to send out a press release for that one.
According to design blueprints released during a meeting of science-related ministers, the robot will have six or eight extendable legs with wheels allowing it to move like an insect over uneven terrain. The robot will be armed with various weapons and will operate both by remote control and its own artificial intelligence system.

"Double Lifetime Warranty"
In my opinion, this is a great idea! First, a lifetime warranty on a video card is always a nice thing to have. Second, six months later, when you have to have the new "must have" video card, how nice is it to be able to sell your current card and be able to pass along that same warranty. On the other hand, when you buy a used XFX card, you don't have to worry if the person you are buying from is dumping a broken card on you. Pretty sweet deal.
Industry innovator XFX today introduced yet another exclusive: the XFX Double Lifetime Warranty, available on all of its Series 6 and Series 7 graphics cards purchased in North America (USA and Canada) on September 1, 2005 or later. However, for a limited time, XFX will also offer the XFX Double Lifetime Warranty to owners of Series 6 and Series 7 graphics cards purchased before the XFX Double Lifetime Warranty?s Sept. 1 debut.....
...To put the Double Lifetime Warranty into effect, the first owner (original purchaser) simply has to complete an online registration at xfxforce.com. If the first owner should sell or otherwise transfer the card, XFX will then honor the warranty for the card?s second owner, as long as they too complete XFX?s online registration.

Hurricane Rita could mean $5 gas
Remember when gas spiked to $3-plus a gallon after Hurricane Katrina? By this time next week, that could seem like the good old days. Experts are guessing that gas could reach $5 a gallon if the storm hits mission critical oil-refineries. Better fill up your tank now just in case!
"We could be looking at gasoline lines and $4 gas, maybe even $5 gas, if this thing does the worst it could do," said energy analyst Peter Beutel of Cameron Hanover. "This storm is in the wrong place. And it's absolutely at the wrong time," said Beutel. Just about all of Texas's refinery capacity lies in that at-risk zone.

Intel chipset shortage extends to 945G
Digitimes are reporting that Intel are experiencing shortages with their 915 chipsets and now the 945G chipset. Good news mayby on the horizon as Intel earlier announced plans to invest more money in two of their exsisting manufacturing sites in the US to increase production capacity.
Intel?s chipset shortage has extended from its entry-level PCI Express (PCIe) 915 series to the high-end 945G line, according to motherboard makers. Tight supply of the chip giant?s 915 chipset has disrupted OEM shipments of high-end Pentium 4-based motherboards, as well as migration to DDR2, indicated the makers

Internet search leader Google is preparing to launch its own wireless Internet service, Google WiFi, according to several pages found on the company's Web site on Tuesday. The launch of a WiFi service would move Google away from its core Internet search service and into the competitive world of Internet service providers.

Rumor: nVidia G80 to use GDDR4 memory chips
After GDDR3 comes GDDR4 and Fudo over at The Inq believes that the nVidia G80 will be the first video card to use the new memory chips. Makes sense to us, but we don't know about the 1600MHz memory clocks.
This memory should start around 800MHz efficiently 1600 MHz if not even higher. However this memory will be different from GDDR3 so we dont think that each graphic chip out there supporting GDDR3 will be able to support GDDR4 memory. This memory will require some memory controller modifications, I guess so I don't expect that older cards will support this new and possible quite pricey memory.

Intel's 65nm process improves power consumption
An Intel press release claims their upcoming 65nm process will stretch the battery life of mobile devices. This is good news after the last process reduction did not go how Intel hoped it would. Our sources at Intel ensure us that the move to 65nm will be nothing like the move last year down to 90nm. For more information click the link below to read the full press release. Be sure to post your comments if you have any!
Intel's high-performance 65nm (a nanometer is one-billionth of a meter) process provides both power consumption and performance benefits over Intel's current industry-leading 90nm manufacturing process. The company's new ultra-low power 65nm process provides Intel chip designers additional options in delivering the circuit density, performance and power consumption required by users of battery-operated devices. "People typically embrace mobile platforms that maximize battery life," said Mooly Eden, vice president and general manager of the Intel Mobile Platforms Group. "Such products will be greatly enhanced by our new ultra-low power manufacturing process. We will design future mobility platforms to take full advantage of both leading-edge, 65nm manufacturing processes."

Office 12 makeover takes on 'feature creep'
Office 12 will be Microsoft's new update for their Office software. Office is now already a household name and most users are familiar with the layout and settings avalaible. Microsoft are trying to make the user experience easier, instead of looking through "1,500 commands located in scores of menus, toolbars and dialog boxes." they are to include a new easiler to use interface, along with more features.
For years, Microsoft has been trying to add features to Office without them getting in the way of people who already know their way around the software. Indeed, Office has become a case study for feature creep--the phenomenon in which a simple technology becomes complicated and unmanageable through the addition of new features. Office, which once had 100 commands neatly organized into menus, ballooned to contain some 1,500 commands located in scores of menus, toolbars and dialog boxes.

Star Wars worm infects gamers downloading off warez sites
Virus writers have developed a worm that spoofs the behaviour of internet search engine Google, varying the results displayed to suit the requirements of hackers. the search engine's address - even if they make a mistake, such as "www.gogle.com". The program links to profitable websites and supports all 17 languages of Google, which is pretty advanced if you ask me! You might not want to download any games off of Shareaza and Imesh!
The worm spreads across file trading networks, targeting users of the Shareaza and Imesh P2P programs. P2Load-A copies itself to the shared directory of these programs as an executable file called Knights of the Old Republic 2, a reference to a well-known computer game related to the Star Wars saga. If this file is run, it displays an error message informing the user that a file does not exist and offering to download it. Meanwhile, unknown to its user, their Windows PC will have become infected.

Microsoft sues more resellers over piracy
Eight companies in five states have been targeted by Microsfot for selling pirated software. The lawsuits were filed in Arizona, California, Illinois, Minnesota and New York against companies that allegedly sold counterfeit copies of software such as Office 2000 Professional and Windows XP, Microsoft said in a statement Monday.
The lawsuits are part of Microsoft's continued crackdown on software piracy, which the company acknowledges cuts into its earnings. According to the Business Software Alliance, of all the software installed on personal computers worldwide in 2004, 35 percent was pirated, resulting in $33 billion in losses. Tips from users who called Microsoft's piracy tip line (1-800-RU-LEGIT) and information derived from the company's Windows Genuine Advantage program helped identify some of the accused sellers of pirated products, Microsoft said. The software maker also used its own "secret shoppers" to gather evidence, it said.

Tropical Storm Rita sends crude over $66 a Barrel
The price of crude oil is up $3 a barrel by mid-morning trading due to concerns over tropical storm Rita. Rita is moving toward the Florida Keys with sustained winds of about 60 mph and a storm surge of up to 8 feet. I topped off my tank of gas at the corner station at $2.57 a gallon when I saw prices start to spike. Nearly all Oil stocks are at historic highs today, so hopefully you have oil in your portfolio.
Approaching Tropical Storm Rita prompted officials to issue a mandatory evacuation order Monday for residents in the lower Florida Keys. Forecasters expect Rita to strengthen into a hurricane as it churns toward the Keys and the Bahamas. At 8 a.m. ET, Rita's center was about 235 miles southeast of the Bahamian capital, Nassau, moving west at nearly 9 mph, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center reported. Maximum sustained winds were clocked near 60 mph.

Rumor: ATI Radeon 1800XT to go faster than 600/1400 MHz
Fresh off the rumor bus we have Fudo and he believes that ATI's Radeon X1800XT will clock better than the expected 600MHz core and 1400MHz memory. This is great news for overclockers and gamers who want the best possible performance.
Most of our colleagues have already reported that the Radeon X1800XT will be shipped at 600MHz core and 1400MHz memory, but we have to say that we always used 600+ and 1400+ numbers. It turns out that there is aheadroom to clock this chip even faster.

Is Silicon Valley Losing Its Edge?
A report claims that Silicon Valley needs to beef up its infrastructure and schools, and cut taxes on manufacturing if it's going to keep up with other U.S. technology hubs.
Silicon Valley is going to lose its competitive advantage if it can't improve public education and traffic flow, contain the cost of housing, and reduce the effect of sales tax on manufacturing, says a report scheduled for release Sept. 21 by the Silicon Valley Leadership Group. Silicon Valley must compete with concentrations of high-tech industry in Research Triangle Park near Raleigh, N.C.; Boston; Fairfield County, Va.; Austin; Seattle; San Diego; and Portland, Ore.

NASA moon program expected to run $100 Billion
With the shuttle fleet grounded and the International Space Station staffed by a skeleton crew, NASA is set to unveil plans on Monday to take people and cargo to the moon. It is being reported that the initial funding estimate will be $100 Billion for the return trips to the moon.
Even before the official announcement, there is criticism from Capitol Hill over the reported $100 billion cost of the lunar program, given U.S. government commitments to the Iraq war and the recovery from Hurricane Katrina. The new $100 billion lunar program would begin in 2018 by landing four people on the moon for a seven-day stay.
