The Video Game "Blitz" Lands Daunte Culpepper in Trouble

It was only a matter of time, but in a Blitz: The League you play a game based around fictional football league where players cripple their opponents, gamble and use performance-enhancing supplements. Any game that makes get Daunte Culpepper charges filed against him is worth checking out! If anyone has played this shoot me an e-mail and let me know what you think of it.

Bilder said "Blitz," which was released in October and has sold 350,000 units, fictionalizes real behavior that the NFL tries to downplay, such as off-the-field fights and wild parties. Its release came around the same time authorities in Minnesota launched an investigation after allegations surfaced of misconduct during a boat party attended by several Minnesota Vikings players. Quarterback Daunte Culpepper and three other players were charged Dec. 15 with three misdemeanors each for taking part in a party some thought bawdy. "It's further reinforcement that these things do happen," Bilder said.

ASUS Ready To Launch A9 Notebook

Asustek Computer is scheduled to introduce the A9, considered its first notebook series that has been completely researched, designed, developed, and manufactured by local engineers in China, to Europe and China in early 2006, according to company sources.

Asustek has almost completed development and verification by the company?s R&D and testing engineers in China of its A9 series, which features a 15-inch display and is aimed at the entry-level segment, company sources hinted. The whole process of product development is expected to take about nine months, the sources added. Asustek?s upcoming A9 notebook series may prove just how capable China?s R&D ability in the IT industry is, sources at Taiwan notebook makers commented. To lower production costs, domestic notebook makers have migrated production lines to China, with only R&D teams left in Taiwan, the sources said.

Opera Says It is Not for Sale

Representatives at the browser company deny an impending buyout from Google or Microsoft; analysts say Opera's mobile technologies make the smaller firm attractive.

Eskil Sivertsen, a spokesperson for Opera, said his firm has not received any offers from either Microsoft or Google, and reported that the company was not being actively shopped to prospective buyers. Sivertsen said Opera has been approached by potential suitors in the past, but that the company plans to remain independent. Neither Microsoft nor Google officials immediately returned calls seeking comment on the rumored offers, and most media representatives appeared to have left for the holiday weekend.

Microsoft Xbox 360 mod chips almost available

According to the website cdrinfo.com, a mod chip for the Microsoft Xbox 360 is likely to show up "within weeks." This is of course bad news for Microsoft, but good news for the millions of consumers looking to pay less. It is only a matter of time for a chip to come out, but is a blow for Microsoft and their improved methods against piracy and modding.

A member of a hacker group disclosed to press that they will finish the first mod chip of Xbox360 in a couple of weeks. "Everyone of us is endeavoring to develop a mod chip with complete functions. With the chip, gamers will access all functions of Xbox360. We think the chip will be available at market in a couple of weeks. But as the first attempt, the first batch of chips may be complex and they may not function very well." Information from another hacker group says pirate games for Xbox360 will be on sale in February or March in 2006.

Rumor: ATI to launch Radeon X1900 next month

Fellow tech writer Kristopher Kubicki has posted an interesting bit over at anandtech about the ATI X1900 and how he has figured out it is being lauched next month. It is interesting to see if ATI can pull off a full launch by then or if this is just a paper launch to beat nVidia out of the gate.

The X1900 is down in the document as sporting 48 pixel-processing pipelines and higher clock speeds than the X1800 - speculation from a number of websites suggests around 700MHz. Like the X1800, the X1900 will ship in two forms: a standard version and a CrossFire Edition, the latter a pre-requisite for running two X1900 GPUs co-operatively. Like all X1000-series chips, the X1900 will support DirectX 9 Shader Model 3.0 and ATI's 40-bit video processing system, Avivo. The X1900 is said to be pin-compatible with the X1800 XT, and, it has been claimed, will entirely replace the older part.

Microsoft settles with Google over executive hire

Microsoft has settled its lawsuit with rival Google over the hiring of Kai-Fu Lee, an expert in speech recognition technology and the man who founded Microsoft's China research lab in the late 1990s. Time will tell if Google's investment pays off!

The tug-of-war over Lee was seen as Microsoft's latest attempt to thwart Google's growing influence. The two have increasingly crossed swords in areas such as search, and Mountain View, Calif.-based Google won an important round this week when AOL chose it over Microsoft as a partner. Google and Microsoft were pursuing AOL to help them expand advertising, instant messaging and video offerings.

Micron Loses Some Memory Income, But Sales Level

Falling memory prices took a toll on Micron's (MU) bottom line, as the company reported a nearly 60% drop in profit from the year before. Shares are down a bit for the day, but have been pretty level this week for all the buzz going around about Micron.

In its financial results for the fiscal first quarter of 2006, Micron reported $1.36 billion in sales, with $63 million in net income, or 9 cents a share. That compares with sales of $1.26 billion in sales and income $155 million, or 23 cents a share, a year earlier. Micron CEO Steven Appleton cited in a statement accompanying the results a 15 % decline in the average selling prices of PC DRAM, the company's biggest product. But he said Micron's success in broadening its product portfolio significantly reduced the impact of the price erosion.

ATI Tech Earnings Drop: PC Division Down 10%

ATI Technologies' (ATYT) first-quarter earnings dropped from a year ago due to lower revenue, lower margins and a charge. ATI said revenue from its personal computer division fell 10% from a year ago to $466 million, while sales in its consumer segment rose 31% to $125 million. It is interesting to see the PC side down with the launch of their chipsets and new video card series.

Revenues for the first quarter were $591 million, a 26% increase relative to the fourth quarter of fiscal 2005. Gross margin percentage was 28.7%. Net income according to GAAP for the quarter was $7.6 million ($0.03 per diluted share). Non-GAAP adjusted net income for the quarter was $26.8 million ($0.10 per diluted share). "We are pleased with our overall progress in the quarter and remain intensely focused on technology leadership and operational execution," said David Orton, ATI's Chief Executive Officer. "Our PC business is benefiting from strong demand for the new X1000 series GPUs as well as significant growth in integrated chipsets. Our Consumer segment continued to record solid growth with handheld shipments up nearly 60% sequentially and surpassing 21 million units in the quarter."

Intel reschedules launch of Conroe and 965-chipset to July 2006, say mobo makers

Intel are already well into production of their 65nm chips, Dempsey for enterprise markets and Presler for the mainstream market. These chips are to be released early '06. Digitimes are reporting from "sources" that Intel is to push ahead the release of the Conroe cpu, so that it coincides with the release of the 965 chipset. This makes sence, as otherwise they would have a chipset on the market with no cpu to support it.

Intel will push up the launch of its desktop Conroe CPU and delay the debut of its 965-series chipset so that both will hit the market at the same time in July 2006 in a demand-boosting strategy, according to sources at motherboard makers in Taiwan

ATI X1000 Series GPU's Available in AGP Video Cards!

Gecube just announced the world's first AGP RADEON X1000 Series Graphics products with the launch of the ATI Radeon X1300 and RADEONR X1600 AGP based graphics cards. ATI told us they didn't think anyone was going to produce them, but that doesn't seem to be the case. No word on if the X1800XT or X1800XL will be launched in the AGP form factor.

The simultaneous release of the GECUBE RADEONR X1300 and GECUBE RADEONR X1600 deliver the latest generation of high performance graphics cards to users of AGP based systems allowing them to easily upgrade without replacing other key PC components such as motherboards. Both cards possess 256MB of DDR2 memory which enhances game visuals and real-time responsiveness, this coupled with extremely realistic colours at higher resolutions (1920x1440 and 2048x1536) give users a real gaming experience in an often surreal gaming world.

The Intel Pentium Presler XE Overclocks Easily to 4.26GHz

THe guys over at The Inq. (We don't sign NDA's) have announced that they have seen a Presler processor hit 4.26GHz with only an extra 0.025 Volts on the reference board and heat sink. I'm impressed with this number, but not at all with thevCPU temperature being at 91 C while sitting in the BIOS. With a new core and the move down to 65nm I was hopeful that Intel would move away from their temperature issues!

I changed the default x13 multiplier not to x14, but to x15 and, when I rebooted the system, the magical 4.0 GHz clock frequency status appeared, yet I only upped the default CPU voltage by 0.025 volts. The CPU temperature as per hardware monitor jumped from 80 C to 90 C, and then pretty much stayed there over those 15 mins as I checked all the new BIOS options, some of which I saw for the first time on an Intel board. Anyway, let's go all the way to a nice, more harmonious x16 multiplier - yes it worked too, and I got an even nicer 4.26 GHz clock with an extra 0.025 volts on top.

Europe: 19" and Larger LCD Screens Recieve 14% Import Duty

The EU plans to impose a 14% import duty on imports of larger LCD screens, leading analysts to forecast a huge hike in sticker prices. I don't see how people can just go out and add an import duty on something just because they want to, but what can you do. Just remember it all started with the Netherlands!

Last year the Netherlands became the first EU member state to impose a 14 per cent tax on DVI screens as a result of a EU directive signed in 2004. Imports shifted largely to Germany, which still allows zero duty imports. Eventually the Dutch State Secretary of Finance intervened and decided that LCD monitors classified solely as a computer monitor would not have to be taxed. This is now going to change again in all EU member states. LCD DVI computer screens larger than 19 inch - monitors which often also can be used to watch television - are likely to be taxed.

Dasher.B Reindeer Worm Hits the Internet

Computers running Windows 2000 and those that have not been updated with MS05-051 face the greatest risk. Be sure you are patched up!

The Dasher.B worm exploits a flaw in Microsoft Windows Distributed Transaction Coordinator, or MDTC, security companies said Friday. Microsoft announced and patched the hole in the component for transaction processing in October. However, initial glitches with the update may have left some users without a properly implemented fix. Three versions of Dasher--B, C and A, which emerged earlier this week--have infected at least 3,000 systems worldwide.

Google and Microsoft back internet research lab

Some might have said it would be a cold day in hell when Microsoft and Google team up, but it seems both companies are helping fund a lab that will help make basic web software run much better. It costs $7.5m to keep the lab running and with companies like Google, Microsoft, and Sun footing the bills it is just spare change to them.

Google, Microsoft and Sun are contributing to the lab because all three have enormous data operations that currently demand huge numbers of people to keep running. The development of the software powering these huge operations typically takes place in a very haphazard fashion. The lab aims to replace the patched up programs with more formally tested software that does the same job with far less human oversight. By making it easy to set up and run web-wide services, the lab also hopes to remove the technology barriers that prevent new competitors taking on giants such as Microsoft, Yahoo, Google and Amazon.

Illegal File Sharing Drops

I wonder how a research firm figures this stuff out? Of course, what they don't say is that there is an error margine of +/- 10%.

According to research firm NPD Group, illegal peer-to-peer file sharing has dropped for the first time since the RIAA began its legal assault in 2003. Since that initial victory, P2P usage has only gone up -- until the June U.S. Supreme Court ruling against Grokster. In June, an estimated 6.4 million United States households downloaded at least one music file, but by October that number had dipped to 5.7 million, an 11 percent decrease. NPD says the change is the first significant drop it has seen that is not related to "seasonality," such as students returning to school.

Intel Corporation and the BMW Group today announced a comprehensive partnership that includes technology, co-marketing and Intel?s sponsorship of the BMW Sauber F1 Team. Under the multi-year agreement and long-term technology partnership, Intel will support BMW in standardizing the IT infrastructure in the worldwide BMW Group data centers and in providing more than 3,000 dealers worldwide with innovative IT solutions. To support the expanding mobility of its staff, the BMW Group will also convert its corporate notebooks to Intel® Centrino® mobile technology-based systems and significantly increase the use of Intel-based PDAs within the company. The two companies have also agreed to develop an industry specification that would allow for seamless integration of third-party devices (including phones and portable music players) into BMW vehicles.
