Xbox LIVE Gold Free Today Through Monday

All Xbox LIVE regions except Europe will have free access to Gold services from November 20th at 12:00PM ET / 9:00AM PT until November 23rd at the same time. Europe's getting it too, of course, just a couple days later, and for a slightly longer time period--from November 25th to November 30th. If you want to see if Xbox LIVE Gold is worth paying for, now is your chance, though these promotions occur several times throughout the year.

XBOX LIVE Gold

Microsoft wants you on Xbox LIVE for the weekend with, of course, a view toward forever, and it's prepared to temporarily waive the cover fee to grab your attention. Xbox LIVE Gold-tier membership usually costs $50 a year and provides access to features like online multiplayer, Facebook, Twitter, Last.FM, and Netflix for starters. Xbox LIVE Silver members who pay nothing save the time it takes to register a free account are by contrast left to nibble on skeletal features like online gamer profiles and friends lists, but otherwise have to stand at the window looking in.

Xbox Modders Unite in Class Action Suit

Texas-based law firm AbingtonIP is organizing a class-action suit against Microsoft over the company's ban on modified Xboxes. The law firm says that Microsoft conveniently timed these bans to coincide with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Halo 3: ODST and as a result, Microsoft earned tons of subscription revenue and game sales before banning the users. Of course the question is, was this action illegal? The firm is recruiting plaintiffs looking for people who have had their Xbox banned from Xbox Live and haven't been given a refund for their remaining subscription.

"Although modification of Xbox consoles is arguably against the terms of use for Xbox/Xbox Live, Microsoft 'conveniently' timed the Xbox console ban to coincide with the release of the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 game and less than two months after the release of the very popular Halo 3: ODST game," says the firm. According to AbingtonIP, Microsoft has also misapplied the ban, locking out users who had modified their Xboxes for reasons other than piracy. It's also been obtaining information from Xbox consoles without the permission of the owner, it claims.

November 20 News from Around the Web

Sapphire Radeon HD 5970 OC Review @ OCC and other reviews from around the web can be found by visiting our forums!

"Overall, I was able to run the card higher than the clock speeds on the HD 5870 for a nice increase in performance, but to do so brought out the fan noise that ATI reference cards always bring to the table when you bump up the fan for additional cooling. I was able to reach clock speeds of 890MHz on the core and 1260MHz on the memory, with power consumption peaking at 486 watts on the system under load with temperatures that reached 69 degrees Celsius. The vapor chamber cooling does its job keeping this behemoth cool! Not too bad on the clocks and temperatures, but as an enthusiast you always want more performance with less power."

Sony Ericsson goes see through

SONY ERICSSON is launching an elite addition to its Xperia range, the new phone, named Pureness still has many aspects left unknown, but seems to be a promising release from Sony having a revolutionary, clear screen. Though it will be launched in the UK at an event being held at Selfridges in London next week, it will likely have a pretty painful price tag for most.

SONY Ericsson Xperia Pureness

The Pureness is essentially a pretty standard candy bar feature phone, but it does have a transparent screen and also includes a 24-hour concierge service to ensure you're always booked into the best restaurants, health clubs, concerts, plays, events and nightclubs.

Fake Payment Request Attack Ramps Up

Trojan-holding emails are far from new, but there is one style in particular that is more widespread than most, one to request a verification for payment to a major company, but instead carries a Trojan. Beware of any email that asks you to download a file you did not request yourself, that is allegedly from a company.

E-mail security company Cloudmark reports seeing more than 1.6 million of the attack e-mails, which bear a subject of "payment request from" followed by a company name such as eBay or J. P. Morgan Chase and Co. The body of the message says that to decline the payment, the recipient must download and install an attached "transaction inspector module."

Convection is when moving air transfers heat to or from a surface. This is the method used by most laptop coolers to keep your CPU, GPU and other critical components from overheating. There are three major factors to effective cooling (or heating), namely temperature difference, surface area, and air flow. Any differences in these factors will lead to differences in performance, even for the same cooler. The Benchmark Reviews team tries hard to provide you with fair and repeatable testing. The Antec Notebook Cooler 200 uses all three factors to achieve effective cooling with minimal power. Our tests show which of those factors makes the biggest difference. FAA Confirms Computer Glitch Delaying Flights

This is a developing story just hitting the newswires. If you are flying today, be ready for delays or even cancellations if things escalate.

***UPDATE*** The FAA is claiming the problem has been remedied but delays may still be prevalent as Airlines try to play catch-up

A computer glitch is causing flights to be delayed nationwide Thursday, the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed. The problems are with retrieving flight plans from FAA computer systems, a spokeswoman said. "We are having a problem processing flight plan information," the FAA's Kathleen Bergen explained in a prepared statement. "We are investigating the cause of the problem. We are processing flight plans manually and expect some delays." The technical difficulties weren't affecting air traffic control's systems, she said. Controllers "have radio coverage and communications with planes," according to Bergen. The problems were first reported Thursday morning out of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta.

Update from Intel's NAND Solutions Group - 34nm SSD Firmware Issue

I just noticed that the Intel NAND Flash memory group issued a new statement just now citing "by end of November" for a firmware fix for the screwed firmware version (02HA) that came out back in October. They also listed some instructions on what to do for those of you that own 34nm drives. I personally updated my drive from 02G9 to 02HA the day the firmware came out, but was lucky my upgrade went smoothly and didn't brick my drive.

Intel X25-M Trim SSD Drive

Intel has confirmed an issue with the firmware update process for 34nm (G2) Intel X25-M SSDs (80GB and 160GB). This predominantly affected Windows* 7 (64bit) users during or immediately after the upgrade process to 02HA firmware using the firmware update tool (version 1.3). Intel plans to release a fix for this issue by the end of November 2009.

Dell is not shipping i7 Studio XPS laptops

Consumers were able to purchase a Dell Core i7 Studio XPS 16 in September, though Dell cannot provide the machines due to "design problems" which remain to be seen in even the review samples of the notebooks. The shipping dates for the machines were originally one week after purchase, but are continually being pushed back still. You can see thread after thread about the delays on the Dell community forums, I'm sure there are plenty of people as curious as I am on the reason for the delays, as you can still purchase the i7 variation of the laptop.

After talking to the nice people in customer service, it seems that Dell can't give anyone any clues as to when the i7 Studio XPS machines will be shipped...Dell's site claims that there is an estimated delivery date on 4th December but few people think that Dell will come close to meeting that date. Others have been told 12th December.

DFI Patent Dual System Platform, Hybrid is Disclosed

Due to the serious issue of global warming, in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, saving energy has become the responsibility of every global citizen. DFI is committed to developing energy saving products, not only to provide consumers a better platform, but also to do the best for the earth. Therefore, Hybrid platform was invented. Besides saving plenty of energy, Hybrid platform also brings consumers the benefits of time saving, space saving, and money saving. In addition, it is simple to use. Via a control panel, two systems can be easily switched and using condition can be known.

DFI Hybrid platform Motherboard

Hybrid platform, adopts the latest DFI patent technology. That is, a board combines a powerful platform of the current mainstream (P45 + ICH10R) and a green platform (NVIDIA ION). In other words, Hybrid has two platforms which operate completely independently. What is more, files can be shared between platforms. Through integrated hardware switch chips as well as network switch chips, Hybrid platform features a KVM and LAN switch on board. So Hybrid platform can be used with a monitor and keyboard/mouse, or with two sets of devices to work separately. This product will bring you the following four benefits: First, energy saving. More and more users need to turn on their computer for a long time; however at the same time they worry about high consumption of energy. While general energy-saving system can not satisfy users in terms of performance, DFI launches Hybrid platform to solve this problem. This platform can be turned on for 24 hours and will not result in high electric bills, but also renders high performance to meet users’ requirements.

Intel's six-core Gulftown is performing well

Intel's future six-core processor 'Gulftown' has begun popping up with some exciting overclocking results consistent among dozens of samples. Another highlight of the chip is the memory controller performance, expect triple channel DDR3 2133 or better on a desktop platform. And for the dual socket platform, replacing the skulltrail platform, just wait for dual gulftown's with six channel DDR3 2133 memory in parallel, that with overclocking capability upwards of 4.2GHz from a stock 2.4GHz is sure to have enthusiasts waiting patiently. AMD should watch out, as this architecture is another big leap in the right direction for Intel.

Good news, most of the samples hit close to 3.5GHz with regular voltages, and around 4GHz with basic "push up" measures (we'll avoid saying "overclocking" among the vendors). And this is with six cores and 12MB cache per chip, a full 50 per cent increase in both categories from the current LGA1366 45nm processors, with roughly the same thermal design power (TDP) rating as well. Oh yes, also don't forget the encryption acceleration as well as little reductions to latency penalties all over the system.

AMD VP visits Taiwan to seek more support from motherboard makers

AMD senior vice president and general manager for Products Group Rick Bergman arrived in Taiwan on November 16 to talk about AMD's latest roadmap with Taiwan PC, motherboard and graphics card makers, as well as seeking more support from them for equal competition with Intel as Intel has agreed to abide by a set of business practice provisions, according to sources from motherboard makers.

Although some market watchers expect the settlement of all antitrust and IP disputes between the two firms will encourage more vendors to adopt AMD's products, the sources believe Taiwan makers are unlikely to change their views simply because of the settlement, since Intel currently still has the majority share of the motherboard market. Market demand for products is still the major index upon which motherboard makers make their decisions, the sources noted.

AOL to Spin Off From Time Warner

For those wondering- yep, AOL is still around. Now they are breaking from Time Warner on December 9th with trading available December 10th under the ticker symbol "AOL".

AOL TW Logo

AOL will officially be spun off from Time Warner on December 9, with trading to begin the next day. Shareholders of record at 2 p.m. PST on November 27 will get one share of AOL for every 11 shares of Time Warner on the day of the long-expected spinoff of the Internet service. At Time Warner's current market cap of $38 billion, that gives AOL an implied value of $3.2 billion--a fraction of Google's $20 billion valuation of the portal in 2005, when it invested $1 billion in the property. And it's even lower than the $5.5 billion valuation Google gave the company last January, when it wrote down its investment.

SSL Flaw Could Have Been Used to Hack Twitter

A flaw in the protocol used to secure communications over the Internet could have been used to hack Twitter accounts. This bug was made known back on November 5th, at that time, it was thought that it would not affect any major web applications, but IBM researcher Tom Cross has recently changed his tune, to one of great concern. The good news is that web sites can simply disable the client renegotiation feature of SSL, which reportedly is what twitter.com has done.

Twitter.com was susceptible to the bug because it did what's called client renegotiation under SSL. Client renegotiation gives the Web site a way to ask the Twitter user for an SSL certificate after a user is already connected to the site. It's a useful tool for sites that let users log on using smart cards or for sites that restrict access to a select group of predefined Web surfers, but until the flaw is fixed, client renegotiation also opens the door for SSL attacks.

Windows XP Users Are Slow to Move to Win 7

Unsurprisingly, Windows XP users have been slow to adopt Windows 7 as compared to Vista users. Many of XP holdouts have been wary of upgrading due to problems with Vista - perceived or real - and are sticking to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" axiom.

Win 7 Logo

Windows Vista users are flocking to Windows 7, but a considerable number of holdouts are resistant to upgrading from Windows XP, according to an InfoWorld survey that was taken over the past several weeks. Thecus N0204 miniNAS Pocket RAID Storage Device Review

Don't let its small size fool you - the Thecus N0204 miniNAS comes with RAID 0, 1, and JBOD support, which means that you can optimize your storage for speed or security. Never before has there been a NAS storage device this small that can be purchased for under $150. Read on to see how it does with a pair of Kingston SSDNow 40GB V Series 2.5" drives in RAID 0!

Thecus N0204 miniNAS

For a first time user, setting up a NAS can be a real pain in the butt if you don't know what you are doing. Thecus has tried to solve this problem with the one-click install option, and to be honest, it works really well for someone that might not feel comfortable with setup. For power users, the manual install option can be had, which gives advanced users the chance to customize some settings right from the bat. Once the basic setup and networking is done, the specific settings are done on the web interface, which is easy to do when referencing the user's manual that we linked above. It will take you a good couple hours to get it up and running the way you want, but once it is up and running you can stream music, pictures and other media formats around the home/office with ease and you have a place to backup your precious data. If you are wanting a small 2-bay NAS and don't mind using 2.5" laptop hard drives then the Thecus N0204 miniNAS is an easy choice. Nothing on the market today can touch it when it comes to pricing, features or the small footprint that it occupies. As long as you don't expect full size NAS performance then you won't be let down by this device!

ATI Radeon HD 5970 Graphics Card Will Cost $599.99 Shipped!

Many of our readers have been curious about the price tag that will be on the upcoming ATI Radeon HD 5970 graphics card, but that question was answered over the weekend. ZipZoomFly seems to have jumped the gun and published pricing information on the HIS H597F1GDG Radeon HD 5970 2GB GDDR5 PCI Express x16 (2.0v) Video Card. It looks like $599.99 is what you will need to hand over to own one of the dual-GPU powered single slot graphics cards. NVIDIA's GT300 powered Fermi graphics card are expected to arrive in Q1 of next year, so the Radeon HD 5970 will be the fastest graphics card around! The card appears to have 2GB of GDDR5 memory and should be launching this week if the rumors are true.
