NVIDIA's GT300 'Fermi' GPU Architecture Leaked

Theo over at Bright Side of News published some updated information on the upcoming NVIDIA GT300 GPU this morning that is well worth a look. Theo claims that with the GT300 you can expect to see configurations with 1.5 GB, 3.0 GB and 6.0 GB of GDDR5 memory!

Beside the regular NV70 and GT300 codenames [codename for the GPU], nVidia's insiders called the GPU architecture - Fermi. Enrico Fermi was an Italian physicist who is credited with the invention of nuclear reactor. That brings us to one of codenames we heard for one of the GT300 board itself - "reactor". When it comes to boards themselves, you can expect to see configurations with 1.5, 3.0 GB and 6GB of GDDR5 memory.

  • 3.0 billion transistors
  • 40nm TSMC
  • 384-bit memory interface

NVIDIA's Developer Relations Team Issues Statement on Batman: Arkham Asylum AA Support

The crew inside of NVIDIA's Developer Relations Department released a statement dealing with the allegations AMD made about how NVIDIA interfered with anti-aliasing (AA) support for Batman: Arkham Asylum on AMD cards. Always good to see the PR departments inside AMD and NVIDIA trading blows!

Batman: Arkham Asylum

A representative of AMD recently claimed that NVIDIA interfered with anti-aliasing (AA) support for Batman: Arkham Asylum on AMD cards. They also claimed that NVIDIA’s The Way It’s Meant to be Played Program prevents AMD from working with developers for those games. Both of these claims are NOT true. Batman is based on Unreal Engine 3, which does not natively support anti-aliasing. We worked closely with Eidos to add AA and QA the feature on GeForce. Nothing prevented AMD from doing the same thing. Games in The Way It’s Meant to be Played are not exclusive to NVIDIA. AMD can also contact developers and work with them. We are proud of the work we do in The Way It’s Meant to be Played. We work hard to deliver kickass, game-changing features in PC games like PhysX, AA, and 3D Vision for games like Batman. If AMD wants to deliver innovation for PC games then we encourage them to roll up their sleeves and do the same.

Google Earth animated with real-time human and vehicular traffic

Google is in the news yet again; this time for Google Earth! Students from the Georgia Institute of Technology have used motion capture data and CCTV video feeds to animate Google Earth with live feeds! It's crazy that this is possible, but cool at the same time!

Augmented Google Earth

Mmm, real time dynamic maps of the Earth. It seems nowadays that supervillainy just isn't as hard as it used to be. Back in the days of Hugo Drax, you had to be a filthy rich eccentric to ever get to spy on the whole world, whereas today all you need is Google Earth and some Georgia Institute of Technology students. Using motion capture data and the veritable litany of CCTV cameras people have surrounded themselves with, the team have succeeded in mapping and animating the real time movements of cars, people and clouds. A proper unveiling is coming up at a symposium next month, by which point they might have added weather patterns, birds and river motions to that list, but for now you can enjoy the video demo after the break.

AMD Announces Open Physics Initiative

AMD and Pixelux Entertainment announced a joint development agreement that is part of the AMD effort to greatly expand the use of real-time physics with graphics through the open source Bullet Physics engine. By encouraging development of physics middleware built around OpenCL and Bullet Physics, AMD and Pixelux offer a route toward physics simulation that spans game consoles, PCs and other hardware platforms. The latest graphics technologies, like the ATI Radeon HD 5800 series of GPUs, offer incredible visual fidelity and high performance physics simulation by taking the next step in realistically animating how rendered game objects move, deform and break.

ATI Stream Logo

“Proprietary physics solutions divide consumers and ISVs, while stifling true innovation; our competitors even develop code that they themselves admit will not work on hardware other than theirs,” said Eric Demers, chief technology officer for graphics at AMD. “By working with Pixelux and others to enable open support of physics on OpenCL and DirectX 11 capable devices we are taking the exact opposite approach.”

GIGABYTE Radeon HD 5870 Graphics Card in CrossFire X @ TweakTown and other reviews from around the web can be found by visiting our forums!

"As our third retail HD 5870 rolled into the labs it was time to check out CrossFire X. Some may wonder what CrossFire X is. Well, it's like CrossFire, but with an X. On a serious note, though, in a single GPU setup it means we're going to be dealing with three cards today. If you're packing a dual GPU setup it tends to mean you're dealing with four GPUs which is something we intend to attack when the HD 5870 X2 shows up on our door step. Since we already know how a stock HD 5870 is going to perform, we thought it was the perfect time to take CrossFire X for a spin. Unlike our first CrossFire article, because we haven't had a look at what GIGABYTE are giving us we'll take the time to have a look at the package they’re offering before getting into the card itself."

AMD's Ian McNaughton blasts NVIDIA over PC Game Issues

AMD's very own self-proclaimed bad boy Ian McNaughton took a direct swing at NVIDIA and The Way it's Meant to be Played program today in a blog post that is worth taking a look at. Ian calls out some issues with several TWIMTBP titles, which is something you don't see being done everyday. If you already own or are thinking about getting Batman: Arkham Asylum, Need for Speed: Shift or Resident Evil 5 then you might want to see what Ian is upset about.

Ian McNaughton

AMD prides itself on supporting open standards and our goal is to advance PC gaming regardless whether people purchase our products. Unfortunately, not everyone shares our philosophy. Nvidia has recently sampled some newly released The Way it is Meant to be Played titles, including Batman: Arkham Asylum, to press in hopes that they would use these titles to benchmark against the HD Radeon 5870 and 5850. There are some known issues with these proprietary TWIMTBP titles.

NZXT Beta EVO Case Review @ Hi Tech Legion and other reviews from around the web can be found by visiting our forums!

"Computer cases seem to quickly be heading in the direction of this philosophy, with more and more wild, interesting looking case designs. The question is, however, are these exotic cases meeting all of the functional needs that we have for the computer case, especially when considering the higher costs of cases these days. When evaluating the usefulness of a case, performance and features need to take precedent or at least be on even playing field with the appearance, unless of course the point of the system is to be radically unique, but then it wouldn't be mainstream. NZXT has always been able to develop good case designs while keeping the look interesting, but one of their less expensive creations really has caught a lot of people's eyes, based on price and what it has to offer. The NZXT Beta EVO is a well constructed case that offers exceptional cooling features for the money. The NZXT Beta EVO takes the functionality of the case back into the forefront, with tool less drive installations and excellent cable management access holes. The interior space is quite roomy for the price point and exterior size, even being capable of holding two full size, dual expansion slot graphics cards."

NVIDIA DX11 Card GT300 - Q4 '09?

With ATI's release of the 5870 DX11 cards, everyone is looking to NVIDIA for their answer. Looks like it could be coming in Q4 with the GT300. Will it beat out the best of ATI?

November is looking to be an exciting month as we hear rumblings of a launch of AMD's Radeon HD 5850 X2 and HD 5870 X2. In fact almost all of the news lately has been about AMD's new DX11 40nm GPU. The question on everyone's minds was the same - Where is NVIDIA? We are happy to report that we were correct in our earlier predictions that the GT300 is farther along than many other sites were predicting. We hear that NVIDIA has made an official statement on the state of the GT300 yields. It seems that the GT300 has been taped out long ago and that yields are fine. This statement comes from a senior product manager for the GT300, but we also have this from our own sources [who have been saying this all along].
