AMD Launches Contest to Celebrate 40 Yrs
Today AMD is celebrating its 40th anniversary and to celebrate how far they’ve come since the days of summer love and bell bottoms they want to give back to their fans – and your readers – for helping them reach this important milestone. In a series of contest giveaways that will take place over the coming months, AMD will be giving away more than 80 prizes ranging from smoking hot AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition processors to ultrathin notebooks to Xbox 360s.

For the first half of the contest, we challenge AMD enthusiasts to submit a video (no longer than 60 seconds) wishing AMD a happy 40th anniversary in the most creative way possible. All imaginative manifestations are welcome, but the one requirement is that the video must somehow say, “Happy 40th Anniversary AMD.” Three grand prize winners will each receive a high-end ATI Radeon HD 4890 graphics card, and 40 first place winners will receive an ATI Radeon 4650 graphics card.

HP's MediaSmart Server LX195 Starts at Just $400 Thanks to Intel Atom CPUs
On Wednesday, details emerged of HP's MediaSmart Server LX195, a home server packing a 1.6GHz Atom 230 processor that's priced at $400 with 1GB of memory and a 640GB hard disk drive. To date, HP has been using Intel Celeron and Advanced Micro Devices' Sempron processors.

Earlier this month, Acer rolled out the Acer AspireRevo, a small, slick box that augments the Atom with an Nvidia Ion chipset to boost graphics performance. This is expected to be priced well under $300 for some models. Asus was one of the first to bring out a head-swiveling Atom-based desktop--the Eee Box, which has been updated recently with ATI graphics. By design, Atom is a more power-frugal and, as a result, a slower processor than Intel's mainstream Core 2 chip architecture. HP, for example, markets its MediaSmart server as a storage hub, which typically doesn't require much processing punch. And Atom is cheap--the Atom 230 is $29, whereas comparative Celeron chips are about $34 but draw much more power. And mainstream Core 2 Duo desktop processors start at about $110.

Apple building chip design capability: report
Apple Inc is hiring new employees from the semiconductor industry and is building the capability to design its own chips, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. The iPhone and iPod maker hopes its efforts will lead to new features for its devices and enable it to share fewer details about it plans with outside chip vendors, the report said, citing people familiar with Apple's plans.
Apple has been hiring engineers to create multifunction chips that are used in cell phones, the Journal report said. Sources familiar with Apple's plans don't expect internally designed chips to emerge until next year at the earliest, it said. Last year, Apple acquired P.A. Semi, a designer of low-power microchips, in a move analysts said bolstered its ability to customize key parts for its iPhone, iPod and Macintosh product lines.

World Health Organization Raises Alert - Pandemic Imminent
The World Health Organization raised the influenza epidemic level from 4 to 5 on Wednesday, signalling that a pandemic is imminent, and urged countries to implement their pandemic plans.
The annoucement came as the number of people infected with swine flu increased rapidly across the world Wednesday, and health officials scrambled to get more information about the virus -- which has no vaccine. "It's a virus that we've never seen before," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. "There's no background immunity in the population, and it is spreading from human to human, all of which has the potential for a pandemic."

ARCTIC COOLING Announces Alpine 64 Pro for AMD CPUs
The Swiss low noise cooling solution provider ARCTIC COOLING today announced the launch of the Alpine 64 Pro, a new product of the acclaimed Alpine 64 series for AMD CPUs. Same as other Alpines, the Alpine 64 Pro offers outstanding price/performance ratio for mainstream users. The Alpine 64 Pro comes backed by a 6-year limited warranty. It will be available in May 2009 with an MSRP of just $10.90 here in the United States.

The Alpine 64 Pro features a lot of high standard components. The 92mm fan comes with PWM function, which controls the fan speed, and thus, lowers the noise level to a minimum according to the CPU load. The PWM function guarantees sufficient cooling at the lowest noise level possible and saves energy simultaneously. Together with the patented fan case, low noise impeller and the vibration absorption, the Alpine 64 Pro is as quiet as 0.4 Sone at full speed (2,000 rpm).

EVGA GeForce GTS 250 Video Card Review @ motherboards.org and other reviews from around the web can be found by visiting our forums!
EVGA offers the best support on the planet for most of their cards. A 2-year warranty may not seem like much but the fact remains that few people have video cards longer than 2 years, especially for those that want the higher end cards and need a hold me over card until the next generation of cards are released or they can afford a new card with the features and performance that the GTS 250 would offer. This card really blew me away in terms of overclocking as I was able to overclock the card to 958MHz stably without visual artifacts. The Step-Up program is a nice touch especially if NVIDIA releases a new card between now and 90 days from now or if you want to upgrade to a GTX275/285. This card is online for a price of $149.99 currently from Newegg and it performs pretty well in standard testing and game play. Its overclocking abilities are what make this card stand apart from its peers as it excels in that arena, earning it an Editor's Choice product.

PC Game Darkest of Days Runs PhysX Technology
Darkest of Days is a historically-based first-person shooter (FPS) where gamers will travel back and forth in time to experience some of history’s “darkest days” and fight through some of the most epic battles in history. To ensure the battles are as realistic as possible, developer 8monkey Labs turned to NVIDIA PhysX technology in order to create environments that were interactive, expressive, and as natural as possible.

“It was critical to the success of Darkest of Days that these epic moments in world history are experienced in eerily accurate detail, and NVIDIA PhysX technology helped us achieve that goal,” said Mark Doeden, Art Director at 8monkey Labs. “Our Marmoset Engine brings these battles to life with a completely unique look, and the PhysX technology was instrumental in making the game feel alive and real.”

AMD Loses Market Share in Video Cards For Q1 2009
Jon Peddie Research (JPR), the industry's research and consulting firm for graphics and multimedia, today announced estimated graphics shipments and supplier market share for the first calendar quarter of 2009. According to JPR the graphics card companies did better in Q1 2009, but AMD and SiS lost market share. JPR claims that AMD video card sales are down 27.5%, which is much higher than I expected.
In Q3 and Q4 of 2008 the channel stopped ordering GPUs and depleted inventory in anticipation of a long drawn out worldwide recession. But, no recession, no matter how severe results in zero sales. The world continued to turn and the consumers continued to buy, albeit they bought less. So by Q1'09, inventories were depleted and the channel and OEMs had to start buying. The net result was Intel and Nvidia were the big winners, breaking an eight year seasonal trend that dictated negative sales from Q4 to Q1.

AMD Athlon X2 7850 Black Edition AM2+ CPU Review @ OCC and other reviews from around the web can be found by visiting our forums!
"While the AMD Athlon X2 7850 might not be as fast as the triple and quad core processors in raw power, it does hold its own - beating out the Athlon X2 7750 in the majority of the tests, as well as the Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 in some as well. Overall, I was impressed with the increased performance of the X2 7850 in the dual core sector. With all of the top end processors released lately, the mid-range has been forgotten, and it is nice to see a refresh available for those who need a budget conscious processor. If you are in the market for a dual core processor, or looking for a great priced processor for that family computer, then the AMD Athlon X2 7850 will fit that bill nicely."

Conficker virus begins to attack PCs: experts claim
A malicious software program known as Conficker that many feared would wreak havoc on April 1 is slowly being activated, weeks after being dismissed as a false alarm, security experts said. Conficker, also known as Downadup or Kido, is quietly turning thousands of personal computers into servers of e-mail spam and installing spyware, they said.
Conficker installs a second virus, known as Waledac, that sends out e-mail spam without knowledge of the PC's owner, along with a fake anti-spyware program, Weafer said. The Waledac virus recruits the PCs into a second botnet that has existed for several years and specializes in distributing e-mail spam.
