New Samsung Flash Memory Chip is 80 Percent Faster

Samsung Electronics has started mass producing flash memory chips that both hold more data and work at higher speeds than competing chips, it said on Sunday.

The new chips, each of which can hold 2GB of data, will likely increase competition in the already highly competitive flash market and maintain the pressure that has seen chip prices fall by more than half in the last year. The read speed has been increased from 17MBps to 30MBps for high capacity cards and the write speed is almost doubled from 4.4MBps to 8MBps, said Samsung.

Nintendo Plans to Boost Wii Production

Finally acknowledging the shortage of Wii gaming systems, Nintendo promised production was being boosted to increase deliveries by next month. This, of course, is great news to those who have been stalking Walmart and Circuit City to get their hands on the hottest console out.

The Wii has pummeled its rivals in a head-to-head battle in next-generation video game consoles involving Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3, which has been plagued with production problems, and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360. Nintendo, which also makes Pokemon and Super Mario games, is planning to sell 14 million Wii machines for the current fiscal year through March 2008, having sold 5.84 million Wii consoles worldwide in the five months since its release late last year.

DRAM Market landscape altered in 1Q07

According to DRAMeXchange's report, the sales revenue of global DRAM brand makers for 1Q07 experienced an 11% sequential drop. Despite an 18% increase in the global output, the whopping 25% QoQ ASP decline brought forth a slowdown to the DRAM industry production value, which was last seen in 2Q05. The current market demand has apparently been unable to keep up with the increasing 12 inch fab output. It's amazing how the memory market has become this ugly. A 25% DRAM price decline in 1Q07 was noted, which is huge!

Revenue breakdown by regions shows Korean-based manufacturers enjoying a 46.26% market share, which was slightly higher than the preceding quarter. Taiwan makers, on the other hand, slid from 17.39% to 16.44% during the same period. This is mainly due to the ramp up from their Korean peers, and the fact that Taiwan makers are required to allocate a portion of their increased production to their respective joint venture partners.

"AJAX sort of deals with all of the old way of doing things. It makes it simpler, which is great, but underneath it’s still all this junky HTML, Document Object Model, CSS, all that stuff, where 30 years ago, we knew how to do that stuff cleanly with a dynamic programming language and a simple graphics model," Ingalls said.

New Hynix Plant Under Construction in Korea

Memory chip maker Hynix has broken ground on a new US$4.1 billion plant in Korea. Korea plans to make NAND flash memory at the new facility. Seems that Hynix had some land development road-blocks that are now resolved and the new plant construction is now underway.

Trouble winning an environmental permit at one factory location and a huge markup in land prices near another Hynix plot had put the decision in doubt earlier this year. The South Korean memory chip maker ran into so much trouble that speculation arose it would build in China instead. But on Thursday, Hynix said it had already broken ground on the 12-inch (300 millimeter) chip factory in Chongju, Korea.
