Microsoft launches Deepfish, new Web browser for smart phones

Microsoft Corp. has unveiled an early version of a new Web browser for mobile devices that it said will make browsing full-sized Web pages faster and easier on small smart-phone screens. For now, a limited number of users with smart phones or Pocket PCs running Windows Mobile 5.0 or later can download Deepfish from the Live Labs Web site. Looks like all the Treo 650 and Treo 680 users are in the dark on this one!

Deepfish, as the software from Microsoft's Live Labs group is called, takes a Web page intended for a desktop Web browser and turns it into a small image that fits on a mobile phone's screen. Users can zoom in on the part of the page they want to read or click on

Apple TV Soon to invade a Living Room Near You

The long-awaited Apple TV home entertainment adapter has finally shipped, and for the first time reviewers and consumers can see for themselves whether Apple's iPod magic can extend into the living room.

Overall, reviews have been moderately good. The device gets high marks for its simplicity, easy user interface and design. But it has been knocked for having only 40 GB of storage, limited file support (apparently even some iTunes files won't work with the device) and iTunes movie pricing. Additionally, it has no support for Internet radio, and users can't purchase files from the iTunes store directly (it simply streams what's stored on your home computer)

Did Google airbrush Katrina history?

A congressional subcommittee accused Google on Friday of “airbrushing history” by replacing post-Hurricane Katrina satellite imagery on its popular map portal with images of the region taken before the storm’s devastation. An interesting read for those that thing 'Big Brother' is always watching.

“Google’s use of old imagery appears to be doing the victims of Hurricane Katrina a great injustice by airbrushing history,” subcommittee chairman Brad Miller, D-N.C., wrote Friday in a letter to Schmidt. Swapping the post-Katrina images and the ruin they revealed for others showing an idyllic city dumbfounded many locals and even sparked suspicions that the company and civic leaders were conspiring to portray the area’s recovery progressing better than it is.

Virus is cloaked as IE 7 Beta 2 download

If you receive an e-mail offering a download of Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2, delete it. A new virus is making the rounds that comes disguised as a test version of Microsoft's current Web browser.

The e-mails carry the subject line "Internet Explorer 7 Downloads" and appear to come from admin@microsoft.com. They include a blue, Microsoft-style graphic offering a download of IE 7 beta 2. Clicking the graphic will download an executable file called IE 7.exe. The file is actually a new virus called Virus.Win32.Grum.A, and security experts were still analyzing it Friday to see what it does. Sophos said it can spread by e-mailing itself to contacts in a user's address book. The virus tampers with registry files to ensure it gets installed, and it tries to download additional files from the Internet, said Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant for Sophos.

Apple's iPhone will be released on June 11

Ever since Steve Jobs' keynote at the Macworld Expo in January, we've known that the iPhone is being released sometime in June. But we haven't known exactly when. Now due to a couple information leaks we know that the launch is coming on June 11, 2007.

Cingular is confirming that the release date will be June 11. A customer service manager at Cingular (we called 800-947-5096 and were transferred to sales) gave us that date late Thursday, but, alas, said he didn't have any additional information beyond that. That date is no coincidence. It's the first day of Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, scheduled to be held in San Francisco from June 11 through June 15. (Incidentally, the agenda includes a focus on Leopard, the next generation of OS X that's supposed to be released sometime in the second quarter of 2007.)

Intel receives $275 million benefit from tax settlement

Intel said Thursday that it will receive a $275 million tax benefit from a settlement with the Internal Revenue Service. That is a nice little chunk of change!

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Intel said it reached a settlement with the IRS for tax years 2003 to 2005. The IRS also told the company earlier this week that it had closed its examination of returns for 1999 to 2002, according to the filing. As a result, Intel said it would reduce the current quarter's tax provision by about $275 million and reduce its projected income tax rate for 2007 below its previous forecast of 30 percent.

Cyberbullies scare schoolgirls into stripping online

Bullies, no longer content to taunt their victims in the playground, are turning to the Web. They are using e-mail, text messaging and social-networking sites in new forms of victimization, according to Canadian researchers.

Cyberbullies are even forcing their girlfriends to undress in front of Webcams and then sharing the images with others online. "They're pressuring each other. This (pressure) is particularly for girls to send pictures of themselves with their tops off," said Faye Mishna, a professor at the University of Toronto who has been researching the cyberabuse of children.

ProMOS: Six DRAM fabs coming on board

Given that its quarterly sales should have bottomed in the second quarter of 2007, ProMOS Technologies is delivering a positive prospect over its business outlook throughout 2007 amid the extending influence of Windows Vista, according to company chairman ML Chen. ProMOS is committed to its five-year expansion plan and is planning to house six 12-inch fabs in total.

Besides slow season impacts, weakening DRAM prices should suppress quarterly sales growth in the second quarter, Chen told DigiTimes. He was also cited by Taiwan Chinese media in saying that DRAM prices should rebound during May. Business prospects should show a positive trend in the second half of 2007 when seasonality upturns arrive and Vista extends its influence over the memory sector, he stressed. For ProMOS itself, the enlarging production scale on 70nm should also promise a better outlook for the company. After announcing volume production on 70nm, ProMOS reiterated satisfaction over 70nm production, noting that wafer starts should reach 15,000 wafers in April, up from 7,500-8,000 in March, according to company vice president of sales and marketing group Ben Tseng. For Fab 3, ProMOS's second 12-inch fab, as a whole, wafer starts are expected to reach 60,000 wafers by year-end of 2007, up from over 50,000 in April.

Microsoft Sells 20 Million Licenses For Windows Vista in First Month

Initial sales figures from Microsoft show its new operating system Windows Vista made a splash in its debut. In the first month of Windows Vista’s general availability, sales exceeded 20 million licenses, more than doubling the initial pace of sales for its predecessor, Windows XP. These initial figures reflect the broad interest in the security and usability enhancements in Windows Vista.

Windows Vista license sales after one month of availability have already exceeded the total of Windows XP license sales in the earlier product’s first two months of availability. In January 2002, the company announced sales of Windows XP licenses had exceeded 17 million after two months on the market. The more than 20 million copies shipped represent Windows Vista licenses sold to PC manufacturers, copies of upgrades and the full packaged product sold to retailers and upgrades ordered through the Windows Vista Express Upgrade program from January 30 to February 28.

"So how did the Ultra X-Pro 800watt power supply do? Price-wise, it's not cheap at $200, but not too expensive either. Performance is good, even with the 12v rails running on the high side. Connectivity is excellent, with plenty of legacy connectors. And, the brushed case looks good, giving the XPro the look of higher-end units. Ultra's AST technology is also a neat tool, and does its' job well."

Porn is a tough sell for bashful panda

Chuang Chuang the panda has been spending his days in front of a big-screen television watching panda porn. Authorities at the Chiang Mai Zoo in northern Thailand hope the images will encourage him to mate with his partner, Lin Hui, and serve as an instructional lesson in how to do it right. I think that this is silly and basic animal instinct should have the Panda ready to mate when the time comes! Forget the video porn and give the Panda a female Panda already!

“Chuang Chuang seems indifferent to the videos; he has no reaction to what he’s seeing on TV,” Kanika said. “But we’re continuing to show him videos and hoping they will leave an impression.”
