February 29 News from Around the Web

Happy Feb. 29!! Find TweakTown's review of the VIA EPIA-SN Mini-ITX Motherboard and other news from around the web in our forums!

"Our first look at the EPIA boards really opened our eyes; while others were criticizing the board for its lack of CPU power, EPIA was never intending to take the place of high-end CPUs. In fact, its aim is to make its way into the silent PC and HTPC market, and with the newest generation of features. Today’s test candidate is VIA’s newest EPIA kid on the block. For quite some time there has been criticism that no graphics card upgradability was offered, but today that changes thanks to the EPIA-SN."

Microsoft cuts Vista prices to urge upgrades

Microsoft Corp said on Thursday it plans to cut prices of its Windows Vista operating system sold at retail outlets in a move aimed at pushing customers to switch to the newest version of Windows. Take-Two says it has more takeover offers

Electronic Arts is not alone in its interest in buying Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. SEC filings show that Take-Two says it has received other offers, but has spurned those as well as the original $2 billion offer EA made last Friday and announced last Sunday, the Journal reports .

EA issued a public statement on Sunday saying that it had made an earlier offer to Take-Two that was rejected and that it was boosting the per-share price it was willing to pay to make the deal worth $2 billion. But Take-Two quickly issued its own announcement, saying it thought EA's offer was too small and that it would prefer to wait to have any negotiations with anyone until after the April 29 release of Grand Theft Auto IV, which is expected to be a hit.

Intel sets pricing for 4-series chipsets; adds P43 to lineup

Intel has set the pricing for its upcoming 4-series chipsets which are to be launching in the second quarter this year, while also adding one more member, the P43, to the lineup, according to sources at Taiwan-based motherboard makers.

The P43, a cut-down version of the P45 chipset, will not support dual x8 PCI Express slots as the P45 will offer, and will support DDR3 memory only up to 1066MHz compared to DDR3 1333 MHz for the P45, the sources indicated. However, the P43 will be available at US$34 in 1,000-unit tray quantities, lower than the US$40 quoted for the P45, said the sources. Intel also plans to launch an entry-level IGP chipset, the G41, in the first quarter of 2009 with pricing for this chip to be decided later, the sources noted.

AVG upgrades popular security suite

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is one of the most popular products on CNET Download.com, with 61 million downloads. On Thursday, publisher AVG Technologies, formerly known as Grisoft, plans to introduce the full version of AVG Anti-Virus 8.0. This upgrade will feature significant changes to the program, integrating the previously stand-alone tools of AVG Anti-Spyware, AVG Anti-Rootkit, and recent AVG purchase LinkScanner as well as showcasing an entirely new interface.

According to Larry Bridwell, AVG's Global Security Strategist, the guts of the program have been overhauled, too. The code rewrite, he stressed, addresses several deficiencies including system slowdowns caused by real-time shields. The integration of LinkScanner, he said, will help warn users of unsafe links, search results, and downloads before they clicked on them. On-demand definition file updates will be made available to users of the free edition for the first time, as will instant messaging protection for users of MSN and ICQ.

HP refocuses as Deskjet turns 20

Two decades ago, Hewlett-Packard launched a printer that would create global demand for what would become one of its most profitable products: ink. HP marks the 20th anniversary of the Deskjet today and is seeking new markets for its printers and ink, including retail chains and corner drug stores where Americans are increasingly turning to have their digital photos put on paper.

Now, inkjets sell for less than $100 and provide all-in-one services, including high-quality photos. HP has sold more 200 million Deskjet printers, each with a big hunger for ink. But with home-based photo printing on the decline, HP is now marketing its inkjet technology to retailers like Target and Costco, urging them to scrap their old "wet lab" chemical-based photo printing and go with "dry lab" inkjet machines that shoot out 1,500 prints an hour.

Sprint raises stakes in the $99.99 unlimited battle

Sprint Nextel upped the ante in the $99.99 all-you-can-eat rate plan battle Thursday by introducing a service that includes unlimited voice as well as unlimited data and slew of premium services. The company announced the new plan called "Simply Everything," which will give customers unlimited voice as well as unlimited data, text, e-mail, Web-surfing, Sprint TV, Sprint Music, GPS Navigation, and push-to-talk service for $99.99 a month.

The new pricing plan is available to existing and new customers on both Sprint's CDMA network as well as its Nextel iDEN network starting on Friday. Current customers will not have to renew or extend their contract to switch to the service. Sprint is also offering discounts for families subscribing to the high-end rate plan. Families will get a discount of $5 per month on every "Simply Everything" service that is added to the same bill for up to five additional lines. This means that two lines would cost $194.98 or $99.99 plus $94.99. A third line would cost an additional $89.99.

February 27 News from Around the Web

OCModShop posted their Gigabyte GA-945P-S3 Motherboard Review today. Find this and other reviews by visiting our forums!

First and foremost, this review is a long time coming, why? Because, I had to buy a CPU and memory just to test the darn thing. But once I did, I finally got up and running quite quickly. I purchased a Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 and 1 gig of appropriate memory. I then placed this equipment into my favoritest (and my wifes) case, the Antec P180b. But the board itself is quite affordable for any level of computer builder. Gigabyte has provided us a board that has big time functions but not a big time price. A newer series board with all the bells and whistles for a new operating system (Vista), a host of easy to use BIOS menus and some other extras that you don't find in more expensive boards. Yes, the GA-945P-S3 is a value at the price.

EU Hits Microsoft with Record Fine - $1.35 billion

The European Commission fined Microsoft a record 899 million euros ($1.35 billion) on Wednesday for defying sanctions imposed on the software giant for antitrust violations, far exceeding the original penalty. The Commission, executive arm of the European Union, has now fined Microsoft 1.68 billion euros for its original violation and for failing to comply with sanctions, more than any other firm. It said no other company had ever ignored sanctions.

After fining Microsoft 497 million euros in 2004, the Commission fined the company another 280.5 million euros in July 2006 for failing to comply with the sanctions. The latest decision picks up from where that fine left off, for the period from June 21, 2006 until October 21, 2007. After that, Microsoft agreed to reduced royalties and to provide needed information.

Microsoft enters virtualization market with Windows Server 2008

Microsoft Corp released the latest version of its Windows operating system for powerful servers on Wednesday, thrusting itself into the red-hot market for virtualization technology that allows one computer to act like many machines. Windows Server 2008 marks Microsoft's first major challenge against VMware Inc, the leader in virtualization, by building the technology into its core operating system.

For the time being, Microsoft will ship Windows Server 2008 with a test version of its "Hyper-V" technology, which adds an extra layer of software that sits between the operating system and hardware, but it expects to add the full feature to the software within six months. Along with Windows Server 2008, Microsoft will also take the wraps off the upgrade to its SQL Server database software, due out in the third quarter, after delays pushed back its launch. The company will also highlight the latest version of its developer software, Visual Studio 2008.
