HP asking Intel to ease restrictions on Atom processors
Hewlett-Packard (HP) is in negotiations with Intel seeking a slackening of its current restrictions which limit the use of Atom series processors only in netbook PCs with up to 10.2-inch panels, according to Taiwan-based notebook makers. HP hopes to use Atom in new mini-note PC models with larger screen sizes.
In light of competition from Asustek Computer and Acer in promoting netbook PCs, HP's 2009 roadmap shows that the company hopes to enhance its netbook lineup by offering an 11.6-inch model in the second quarter of 2009 and an 13.3-inch model in June 2009, the sources pointed out.

How Many Seconds Are In A Minute? 61 Seconds Tonight!
Always short of time? Not enough moments in the day? Tonight you'll get an extra second to enjoy 2008. Use it wisely; perhaps an extra long smooch is called for. These so called leap seconds are occasionally added to align atomic time with astronomical time and ensure that the Sun remains overhead at noon, which is obviously still important.
"The difference between atomic time and Earth time has now built up to the point where it needs to be corrected, so this New Year's Eve we will experience a rare 61 second minute at the very end of 2008 and revelers... will have an extra second to celebrate."

Yahoo & Intel Team Up for Internet-Enabled TV
Yahoo! and Intel announced that they will premiere their joint Internet-enabled TV prototypes at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Both companies have built a substantial business in the this new media market with their ventures into home connectivity and home theater and see CES as an opportunity to show off their new ventures to the television consumer.
What exactly are they trying to achieve? For Yahoo, it's establishment of the Widget Channel, a software foundation that can house programs for browsing photos, using the Internet's abundant socially connected services, watching YouTube videos, or digging deeper into TV shows--and through which Yahoo will be able to show advertisements. For Intel, it's a foothold in an industry whose microprocessors have typically been cheaper, less powerful, and less power-hungry.

AMD to trim about 600 jobs, 100 more than planned
Advanced Micro Devices, the second-largest producer of personal-computer processors, will cut about 600 jobs, 100 more than previously planned, as it struggles to return to profitability.
The cuts will result in an expense of about $70 million in the fourth quarter, including $34 million from severance costs and the continuation of some employee benefits, the company said Monday in a regulatory filing. Sunnyvale-based AMD said earlier that the job reduction would cost $50 million. The company, on course for its third-straight annual loss this year, is striving to keep up with larger rival Intel as demand for PC chips slumps. Intel has captured market share by adopting newer technologies more quickly.

Microsoft outlines vision of pay-as-you-go computing
Microsoft has applied for a patent on metered, pay-as-you-go computing. U.S. patent application number 20080319910, published on Christmas Day, details Microsoft's vision of a situation where a "standard model" of PC is given away or heavily subsidized by someone in the supply chain. The end user then pays to use the computer, with charges based on both the length of usage time and the performance levels utilized, along with a "one-time charge."
A computer with scalable performance level components and selectable software and service options has a user interface that allows individual performance levels to be selected," reads the patent application's abstract. The patent application was filed June 21, 2007. "The scalable performance level components may include a processor, memory, graphics controller, etc. Software and services may include word processing, email, browsing, database access, etc. To support a pay-per-use business model, each selectable item may have a cost associated with it, allowing a user to pay for the services actually selected and that presumably correspond to the task or tasks being performed," the abstract continues.

Have a Safe and Happy Holidays
I just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Holiday and to be very careful while traveling as the weather across the nation isn't the best this week. I was driving to pick up some web server parts yesterday afternoon and it was raining, but the ground temperature was below freezing. That caused the roads to ice up even though it was warm enough to be raining. I was driving home on Interstate 70 and cars were wrecking all around me. I even managed to snap a picture of a box truck that slid on an overpass and sat across two guard rails. It was so bad there was even a 13 car accident about 10 miles past where I was driving that claimed a life, so be careful and see you back on the site in a couple days!

Intel insists Atom only for Intel chipsets
NVIDIA's recent move to try to extend Intel's Atom ecosystem to its recently announced Ion platform appears to have been knocked back by Intel, according to a response primarily directed at PC manufacturers as seen by Digitimes. Not good news for NVIDIA, but you never know what will happen in the months to come.
Nvidia's push for the Ion platform, which combines its GeForce 9400 mGPU with the Intel Atom CPU, is heavily reliant on Intel being willing to abandon its current Atom pricing system. Under the existing scheme, Intel will only sell Atom CPUs and corresponding chipsets in a bundle, but if hardware vendors are unable to buy just the Atom CPU, the Ion platform becomes too expensive for most applications. Nvidia executives recently visited local PC makers, in an attempt to drum up support for allowing its MCP7A and MCP79 chipsets into the Atom ecosystem.

EA to offer 'Spore' DRM-free
Starting Monday, Electronics Arts will sell its popular video game Spore free of any digital rights management restrictions. It's part of a slew of titles which EA will offer on Valve's Steam distribution platform.
Prices for the DRM-free versions are said to be on par with what the games would sell for in a box in a retail store. It's a move likely to win EA some points with gamers after the disastrous public response to its DRM policy for Spore. Originally the company locked the game using DRM software called SecuROM to no more than three machines, which it later upped to five.
