Intel shipping updated dual-core Itanium 2 - Montvale 9100 Series

Intel is shipping an updated version of its dual-core Itanium 2 server processor, called Montvale. But don't expect to see a dramatic improvement in performance from the new chips, despite the addition of several new features. Beyond Montvale, Intel is working on three future versions of Itanium. Tukwila, which will be manufactured using a 65-nm process and pack four processor cores on a single silicon die, will be released next year.

Made using the same 90-nanometer process technology used to produce the existing Itanium 2 9000 series of processors, Montvale -- formally known as the Itanium 2 9100 series chips -- offers incremental improvements, including a faster front-side bus on some models and features that lower power consumption in certain situations and improve reliability. "Essentially, this is a follow-on product to the current one," said Eddie Toh, regional platforms marketing manager in Intel Asia-Pacific's Server Platforms Group.

October 31 News from Around the Web

Happy Halloween everyone! Celebrate by visiting the forums and checking out all the news from around the web, including this review of the MSI P35 Platinum mobo from Boot Daily.com!

MSI took some creative liberties on this board and implemented the now-staple passive cooling system which uses heatpipes to cool the north and south-bridge chipsets. The overall look of the particular cooler it uses leaves things looking a bit curvaceous and different. PC enthusiasts will appreciate the look assuming they’re using a case with clear side panels. We find the look to be very unique and helps the P35 Platinum stand out a bit from the pack.

Seagate Shutting Down Northern Ireland Hard Drive Plant

Seagate Technology, the world's largest maker of hard drives, said Monday it is shuttering one of two manufacturing facilities in Northern Ireland, resulting in a cut of 780 employees, about 1.5 percent of the company's global work force. Seagate established operations in Limavady in 1997 to manufacture high quality, super-polished aluminium substrates for use in Seagate hard drives. The plant was the only internal supplier of substrates which are used in a variety of Seagate hard drives such as for desktops, servers and X-boxes. It looks like the work here is moving to Malaysia.

The company is closing a 10-year-old plant in Limavady in County Derry that manufactures substrate materials used in disks for hard drives, Seagate spokesman Woody Monroy said. Monroy did not know how much money the company would save from the move but said it is part of Seagate's ongoing effort to streamline operations. He said Seagate expanded substrate manufacturing at its facilities in Singapore and Malaysia last year while external suppliers have lowered their costs.

Asustek complains of Intel laptop processor shortage

Taiwan's Asustek Computer complained on Tuesday of a shortage of Intel central processing units (CPUs) for laptop PCs, but said it didn't expect the problem to affect its sales.

"The biggest shortage in notebook components is in CPUs, Intel CPUs. Intel isn't meeting demand," said Jerry Shen, president of Asustek, answering questions at an investors conference in Beitou, Taiwan. Asustek forecasts it will ship between 4.2 million and 4.4 million of its own-brand laptops this year, not including its popular new Eee PC. The company has targeted shipments of up to 400,000 Eee PCs this year.

Trouble on horizon for 'white box' PC makers

Apple might be the flavor of the moment in the consumer PC world, but hundreds of thousands of customers every year continue to choose plain vanilla "white box" PCs. Those purchases go on as Hewlett-Packard and Dell churn out millions of name-brand PCs every quarter, Acer enjoys double- and triple-digit growth rates, and Apple continues to be the darling of the hardware business.

But the growing popularity of notebook PCs spells big trouble for the future of white-box manufacturing. The "white-book" market has dwindled from an already-small 8.5 percent share to a 5.6 percent share between 2003 and 2006. That comes while notebooks have, over the same period of time, become the dominant PC form factor for top vendors Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Lenovo, and Acer, accounting for two-thirds of consumer PC sales.

Notebook component shortage may hit notebook ODMs in 2Q 2008

The notebook industry may see components shortages in the second quarter of 2008 if upstream suppliers fail to accelerate their expansion, according to industry sources. Sources indicated that serious shortages in the third quarter involved power management (PWM) ICs, graphics cards, high-capacity hard disk drives, panels, batteries, and mechanical parts.

Notebook shipments from Taiwan makers will reach 25.98 million units in the second quarter of 2008, approximately the same as the volume for the third quarter of 2007, according to Digitimes Research. However, so far component suppliers have been slow to expand their capacity to meet strong demand, the sources revealed.

Graphics card demand to boost in 2Q08

Although recent market observations noted that the graphics card market is facing problems due to the trend of notebooks replacing desktop PCs, and IGP (integrated graphics processor) performance continuously improving, sources at first-tier graphics card makers remain optimistic and believe that the market should see a boost in the second quarter of 2008.

With Windows Vista SP1 and more DirectX 10-based games scheduled to launch in 2008, demand for DirectX 10-based graphics cards should see a boost, noted the sources.

Bad NVIDIA - SLI Doesn't Work in Crysis!

Crysis hasn't been out for more two days and a number of people have already found out that SLI technology doesn't yet work on the new DirectX10 game title. Granted, Crysis is only in beta, but it would still be nice to see SLI supported from the start. NVIDIA made a statement today that the final Crysis game will support SLI via a patch, so keep waiting! In other Crysis and NVIDIA news it seems that the Forceware 169.01 64-bit beta drivers aren't playing nice with the 64-bit version of the game. Looks like they have some more work to do on the 64-bit software.

"Although SLI is not supported in the demo, the final Crysis game with a patch will provide full SLI support." - NVIDIA

DirectX 10 Demo of Crysis Coming Out Tomorrow on NZone.com

PC gamers will soon be able to play the most advanced video game ever created. The Crysis demo—available tomorrow from nZone.com—includes the complete first level of the game, representing about 45 minutes of game play. NVIDIA does not have an exact eta yet for when the Crysis demo will hit tomorrow, but trust me we asked! Be sure to follow the link below to see three screen shots from the demo and to find the download link!

“Originally we set two extreme and mutually exclusive goals: 1) pushing the boundaries of interactivity and non-linearity, and 2) achieving a realistic experience where you forget you’re playing a game. With the deep technical expertise of NVIDIA’s world-class support team, we achieved these two seemingly impossible goals, defining the heart of Crysis. We developed Crysis on NVIDIA graphics processors and we recommend GeForce 8800 graphics cards for the best experience.”

Senate Passes Internet Tax Moratorium

he Senate on Thursday night approved a seven-year extension of a moratorium on state and local taxes on Internet access. The Senate voice vote came a little over a week after the House passed a bill calling for a four-year moratorium. The tax ban, first approved in 1998, is set to expire Nov. 1.

Attempts in both the House and Senate to make the ban permanent in recent weeks were unsuccessful despite strong support for the idea. Sens. Tom Carper, D-Del., and Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., in a joint statement called the agreement "a commonsense victory both for Internet users and for state and local governments."
