Smiley Emoticon Turns 25
Today marks the official 25th anniversary of the first emoticon, also known as the smiley face. Carnegie Mellon University Professor Scott Fahlman claims to be the inventor of this emoticon, a colon followed by a hyphen and a parenthesis, where on this day a quarter-century ago, he placed it in a message that was posted on a message board.
Love it or hate it, the smiley is well embedded into our cultural syntax at this point and today marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of its first appearance. Carnegie Mellon University professor Scott E. Fahlman says he was the first to use the now ubiquitous keystrokes that gave birth to a whole range of emoticons.
