Apple Launches iPhone in UK
Apple Inc.'s iPhone will go on sale in Britain and the UK on Nov. 9 will have the O2 network as its exclusive carrier, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said Tuesday. The 8-gigabyte model will sell for $536 (269 pounds), Jobs said at a news conference in London. Still, in many people's eyes, the iPhone’s most obvious weakness is that it does not operate on third generation (3G) mobile networks, which offer higher web browsing speeds compared with their 2G equivalents.
The iPhone will face tougher competition in Europe from Nokia and Sony Ericsson, who have already unveiled their range of phones with high-quality music and Internet browsing functionality. Steve Jobs, who said that he plans to announce "a few more" operators in Europe next quarter and when asked about lack of subsidies, said: "Sometime you get what you pay for too."
