Intel to launch Core 2 Duo E4300 in 1Q 2007
Aiming to counter pressure from the launch of Socket AM2 Sempron processors by rival Advanced Micron Devices (AMD), Intel plans to further cut the prices for the complete line up of its entry-level Celeron D processors in late October following a planned price reduction for the majority of the lineup on July 23, according to sources at Taiwan motherboard makers. By the second quarter of 2007, Conroe-L CPUs will account for 11% of Intel's desktop CPU shipments, with the portion of Celeron D's to drop to 8%, the sources added.
Intel originally planned to position the E4200, which will represent the entry level of its Core 2 Duo CPU family, against AMD's forthcoming Socket-AM2 Athlon 64 X2 3600+ CPU. However, recent tests indicated that the E4200 could hardly outperform the Athlon 64 X2 3600+, prompting Intel to change its roadmap, the sources said, noting that the E4300 CPU will feature a core speed of 1.8GHz, as compared to a core speed of 1.6GHz for the E4200.
