CES 2013: Origin and CUPP Show off Hybrid x86 / ARM-Based Gaming Laptop!

Yes, you've read that right: ORIGIN and CUPP have shown off a hybrid x86 / ARM-based laptop at CES 2013 that's good for gaming. This 11.6 inch 1366x768 display laptop can actually run Windows 7 and Android 2.3.4 simultaneously! On the x86 side, the specs include an Intel Core i7 2.7GHz CPU, 4GB RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M GPU with 2GB RAM and 128GB SSD. On the ARM side it has a Texas Instruments OMAP 3730 running at 1GHz with 512MB RAM, integrated WiFi and unspecified storage. These specs are quite modest by today's standards, but are sufficient to run Gingerbread.

The laptop is somewhat bulky considering that it's essentially got two computers fused together inside which take up more space. Ports include Ethernet, VGA, HDMI, headphone and mic, USB 3.0 x 2, a USB 2.0 port and a Kensington lock. Note that this is a pre-production laptop, with CUPP developing a more powerful multi-core ARM version running the latest Jelly Bean version of Android. Origin is looking to add a touchscreen to give a better user experience with Android and Windows 8. Picture and further details courtesy of Engadget.

Having full ARM and x86 systems in the same machine opens up a whole bunch of new possibilities. You can do some CPU-intensive image editing in Photoshop, put Windows to sleep, press [Fn] + [Shift] to switch over to Android (and back), then upload that edited picture to Flickr using Chrome while sipping only a trickle of power. Or you can render a video in Windows in the background while checking on your social networks on Android. It's a pretty ideal setup for editors like us. Both systems share the same 11.6-inch 1366x768 display, keyboard and trackpad.
