Google Welds Gmail to Google Drive to Offer 10GB Email Attachment Capacity
Email has in many ways been stuck in the stone age, particularly when it comes to attachments, with limits of between 10-30MB or so, depending on the provider. Now, Google has cleverly welded together their Google Drive cloud storage launched in April with their Gmail service to fix this limitation. Starting today for users who opt in to Gmail's new compose experience, they will be able to attach files stored in Google Drive to their emails.
These will actually be links to the files, which remain stored in Drive and can be up to a gargantuan 10GB in size! One effect of this, is that the latest version of the file will always be available. Whether this is a benefit or not depends on the purpose of the attachment and the recipient's needs.
Like a smart assistant, Gmail will also double-check that your recipients all have access to any files you’re sending. This works like Gmail’s forgotten attachment detector: whenever you send a file from Drive that isn’t shared with everyone, you’ll be prompted with the option to change the file’s sharing settings without leaving your email. It’ll even work with Drive links pasted directly into emails.
