Congested Wi-Fi Networks Boosted by up to 700 With WiFox Software
Public Wi-Fi networks tend to be congested places, with so many users that performance can often be sluggish to the point of unusability. Now researches at North Carolina State University have devised software algorithms to dramatically boost performance. Called WiFox, the new software was tested on a real Wi-Fi system in the lab that could handle up to 45 users. It typically boosted performance by around 400% with 25 users logged on, rising to a maximum of 700% with the full 45 users. "One of the nice things about this mechanism is that it can be packaged as a software update that can be incorporated into existing WiFi networks," says Arpit Gupta, a Ph.D. student in computer science at NC State and lead author of a paper describing the work. "WiFox can be incorporated without overhauling a system."
