Google's Self Driving Cars Record 300,000 Miles With Zero Accidents
The last time we reported on Google's driver-less vehicles, they had managed to get a license in Nevada racking up 140,000 miles without an accident. Well it seems they have doubled that, with Google's self driving cars having passed the 300,000 mile mark. Any accidents or mishaps with the dozen or so driver-less vehicles have happened when someone was driving it, simply put the computer's driving record is 100% spotless. While it seems a bit awkward to think of a day when we would no longer need to drive our own vehicles, I certainly look forward to it. Imagine the productivity one could achieve on daily commutes. Let's hope Google's self-driving car project continues to prove that it is a safer alternative for the future.
We’re encouraged by this progress, but there’s still a long road ahead. To provide the best experience we can, we’ll need to master snow-covered roadways, interpret temporary construction signals and handle other tricky situations that many drivers encounter. As a next step, members of the self-driving car team will soon start using the cars solo (rather than in pairs), for things like commuting to work. This is an important milestone, as it brings this technology one step closer to every commuter. One day we hope this capability will enable people to be more productive in their cars. For now, our team members will remain in the driver’s seats and will take back control if needed.
