Godfrey Cheng Resigns From AMD After 12 Years

Earlier today we learned that Godfrey Cheng has resigned from his position as the Director of Client Technologies at Advanced Micro Devices. Godfrey worked at ATI Technologies and AMD for a total of twelve years. He worked very closely with Legit Reviews when he was the Director of Technical Marketing and launched the highly successful Fusion APU last year. Godfrey was heavily involved with the AMD APUs (codenamed BRAZOS, LLANO and the upcoming TRINITY) and those products have been the highlight of AMD's consumer processor line since introduced. It looks like Godfrey wants a new challenge, so we are sure that he will quickly find one! The bad news for AMD doesn't stop there though, the WSJ reports that Samsung has hired several former AMD employees including Patrick Patla (former AMD vice president), Jim Mergard (a 16-year AMD veteran) and Brag Burgess (The Bobcat processors chief architect) in the past week. Also, keep in mind that Eric Demers, AMD's CTO of graphics, left the company just six weeks ago to become the VP of Engineering at Qualcomm. All these exits are coming just months after Rory Read became the new CEO of AMD. Rick Bergman the companies Products Group General Manager leftAMD to pursue another opportunities back in September 2011. It really makes you wonder what is going on over at AMD right now as in the past six months a large number of key people have left the company. This often happens when a new CEO takes the helm, but all these departures has certainly gotten our attention.

After almost 12 years with ATI Technologies and AMD, I tendered my resignation last week. This may come as a shock to many of you but it is the right time to make a change. I really appreciate the opportunities that have been afforded to me at this company and I have enjoyed working with each and every one of you guys over the years. All good things must come to an end. For me, despite the great years that I have been with ATI Technologies and AMD, I am in need of change and new challenges. This is the main reason for my departure at AMD.
