MSI 790FX-GD70 Motherboard Review

We wish we would have come away with a better feeling about the MSI 790FX-GD70 motherboard. There was nothing about the board that made us take a second look or that really stood out. In this market, it is hard to make a sale based on performance alone anymore. You have to have something else that will draw people in…

The performance of this
board was average. It kept up with the others, but did not really excel in any one area. Overclocking on the board was… well, we do not know since our board died while being overclocked with only the CPU voltage increased to 1.45V. We hope
to look at another board to give us a better idea in the near future after we get a replacement from MSI. From reading around
the web, we are not the first to see a board blow due to some cheaply made voltage regulators. The MSI 790FX-GD70 is not the motherboard to use if you plan on doing even mild overclocking.

The layout and setup of the board were of no issue. We did not have a problem with anything. There was plenty of room on the board to work with it. The CPU socket had plenty of room for any cooling solution.

The bundle that comes with the MSI 790FX-GD70 was pretty good. There were some nice additions like the header extensions. But, once again, there was nothing that would make me say “I gotta have this board!”

At $179.99 plus shipping the pricing for the board was a little high with everything considered. If we get a new board and it overclocks really well, then maybe we can re-think it, but overall, for what you get and the performance it gives it is not deserving of the price when you can get other boards that overclock well and perform better.

Legit Bottom Line: The MSI 790FX-GD70 motherboard left us wanting… wanting more for the price, wanting better performance and certainly wanting a board that we can overclock…
