Over the years computer manufacturers have increased the number of CPU core counts in modern computers. Stanford Researchers have passed a new mile stone by reaching over 1 million CPU cores in a super computer. In fact they broke 1 million by a large margin with 1,572,864 compute cores or processors. One would ask what do you do with over one million CPU cores? Stanford is using them to simulate fluid dynamics. Researchers at the Center for Turbulence Research set a new record in supercomputing, harnessing a million computing cores to model supersonic jet noise. Work was performed on the newly installed Sequoia IBM Bluegene/Q system at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories.
