Microsoft helps Intel with its i915 chipset inventory woes

By

Although Intel is experiencing heavy GP chipset (915GM) inventory pressure as it transition to the Napa platform, industry players noted that the chip giant may gain relief from Microsoft, which has approved the 915GM chipset – as well as the desktop 915G IGP chipset – for supporting the Vista operating system (OS).

Due to the transition to the Napa platform, 915GM inventory levels have swelled, with the 915GM-supported Dothan CPU inventory levels reportedly reaching four million units. However, Microsoft has now revised its guidelines so that the 915GM can be certified as Vista capable. Originally, Microsoft’s Vista approval guideline required graphics chips to pass the test on Windows Vista Display Driver Model (WDDM). Since the 915GM did not meet the requirement – it only supported the XP Display Driver Model (XPDM) – Microsoft revised its requirements and now any chipset that supports DirectX 9.0 can gain Vista-capable approval.
