Massive Derelict Spacecraft Discovered in Elite Dangerous

Elite Dangerous is a video game that is essentially a space trucking simulator, but every now and then something really cool happens that makes the game into something else. Kotaku reports that gamers have made a very interesting discovery after following clues to discover a massive spaceship that was just floating derelict in space.

The ship had no one on board, but there were logs that could be scanned allowing players who discovered it to piece together an idea of what had happened to the ship called the Zurara. The logs also included audio files that can be listened to. Apparently the ship is part of a tie-in with a novel that started three years ago.

While it’s unclear what the purpose of the ship and its storyline are right now, there are rumors that the massive ship is linked to some larger overall storyline that has to do with the game’s major factions and perhaps the aliens discovered in the game. An image of one of the ship logs reads that the ship was attacked by invaders of some sort who were defeated, but not before they destroyed the ship’s main reactor. With the reactor dead the ship had only 20 minutes of air leading the remaining crew to wait for their death or kill themselves. This sort of discovery makes me want to try the game out, but apparently this sort of thing is incredibly rare.
