LG’s Flagship G5 phone Has A VR Headset Option – LG 360 VR

When it comes to cell phones, you typically have only two choices when it came to using Virtual Reality. You have the Samsung Gear VR, and Google’s Cardboard, which is literally just a piece of cardboard with plastic lenses that allows you to power the display using nearly any smartphone available. LG has instead designed their own VR headset specifically for use with its newest G5 smartphone.

The new device, LG 360 VR, uses the same Google Cardboard content as well as videos and pictures captured by LG 360 CAM (LG’s 360 degree camera), which is also a new accessory in the companion devices for the LG G5 phone series (“Friends” as LG calls them). The VR Goggles weight just 118g (4.16 ounces) and that makes them just one-third the weight of other competing VR goggles. It looks like LG was going for a portable, lightweight design for their immersive VR experience.

Inside the LG 360 VR are dual 970×720 OLED displays (639 PPI) that are both independently focus-adjustable. When wearing the goggles LG says that it simulates a 130-inch TV viewed from two meters away. The LG 360 VR headset uses a single USB-C cable to connect power and video, and as USB-C makes its way into other phones and tablets, LG’s VR headset could end up being compatible with other hardware, too. Word around the interweb is that you need an Android phone using the latest Snapdragon 820 processor to have the horsepower to run the LG 360 VR.

LG has not announced a release date for the 360 VR or any pricing details, but we are excited to see how the pair of goggles perform!
