Intel Core i9 12-core CPU Tipped for August Launch

Some details about Intel’s plans for the CPU market over the summer have leaked and the leaks are very interesting. If accurate this summer Intel will launch a new processor that sounds as if it might be the performance king for the foreseeable future. The top of the line CPU in the leak is said to be the Core i9-7920X 12-core unit reports TechCrunch.

The chip will have power consumption of 140W and a poster on Anandtech claims that the chip will be able to run 24 threads and have 16.5MB of L3 cache and 44 PCIe lanes. The clock speeds aren’t mentioned in the leak for that high-end processor. Word is that some of the new processors, and there are a handful of them, will support Turbo 3.0.

Turbo 3.0 is said to be a faster frequency boosting mode for single threaded tasks. There is no indication on pricing, but expect this 12-core beast to be very expensive. That high-end Core i9 part won’t ship until August, but the other processors on the list will land mostly in June.

Other chips listed on the Anandtech forum leak include a 10-core Core i9-7900X running at 3.3GHz base, 4.3GHz turbo 2.0, and 4.5GHz turbo 3.0. A Core i9-7820X 8-core unit running at 3.5GHz base, Core i9-7800X 6-core running at 3.5GHz base and lacking turbo 3.0, Core i7-7740K quad core at 4.3GHz base, and a Core i7-7640K running at 4.0GHz.
