Ikea TRDFRI Smart Lighting to Get Voice Control Capability

By

You can buy just about anything from often difficult to assemble furniture down to swedish meatballs at Ikea. The company also sells smart and green lighting that you can add to any existing outlet with its TRDFRI line of LED bulbs. These bulbs work with a special gateway to allow you to control the lighting via a remote control and dim them via a remote if you want.

The company has announced that its TRDFRI line will also get a new trick this summer when they are updated to allow control via voice commands from devices like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple Siri and HomeKit. This means that if you are an Amazon Echo user, you can expect a new skill that will let you use your voice to turn off lights reports TechCrunch.

TRDFRI users will still be able to control their lighting via the app or remote control. The TRDFRI lighting components are surprisingly cheap making them one of the better options on the market today. You can get the gateway needed for control for $29.99 and the bulbs start at $14.99 with the hardware embedded to allow them to be controlled.

Ikea has plans for more smart home technology over the next few years. Once the voice control capability rolls out, I would assume that the future smart home gear would support voice control as well. Ikea’s smart home products work with other brands of gear.
