id Software Talks About AMD Ryzen CPU Enhancements and 8K Gaming
AMD has posted a video clip that has id Softwares CTO, Robert Duffy, talking about how DOOM runs well on AMD Ryzen 7 processors out of the box and he believes there will be additional CPU headroom. He notes that the additional cores allow then to turn up more things and noted that having more cores is very beneficial to streaming. Live video encoding is tough on a true quad-core processor, but on Ryzen 7 with 8-cores/16-threads that isn’t a task that is going to make your gameplay suffer. He pointed out that AMD Ryzen has good performance out of the box on DOOM at 1080P and 1400P resolutions, but that they are working on making sure it is also good at 4K and 8K resolutions.
“We’re working on the next generation of idTech right now, and we’re definitely gonna optimize fully for Ryzen. The new engine tech that we’re working on is far more parallel than idTech 6 (DOOM 2016 engine) was. We plan to really consume all the CPU that Ryzen can offer.” – id Software CTO, Robert Duffy
Near the end of the interview Mr Duffy said that id Software is working on optimizing for Ryzen CPUs and the plan is to consume all the CPUs that Ryzen has available. That is pretty exciting to hear!
He also mentioned the upcoming AMD Vega GPU when he was talking about the upcoming release of Quake Champions when he talking about that game being optimized for both AMD CPUs (Ryzen) and AMD GPUs (Vega) when it is launched. AMD Radeon RX Vega is expected to be released by the end of June 2017 and Quake Champions is a PC exclusive title due to the super-fast 120Hz target refresh rate for the shooter. id Software is laying the ground work to make Quake Champions one of the best competitive PC game titles to come out in recent memory.
Quake Champions will be a free-to-play game and doesn’t have a release date as of yet.
