Netflix was quick to embrace Ultra HD 4K streaming of its original content, and it looks like Netflix is getting ready for beyond 4K content. According to The Hollywood Reporter, season three of House of Cards was shot and finished in 6K! That would be a screen resolution of 6144 x 3160 pixels, which would be 9.4 times as many pixels as traditional 1080P HD content! Four in ten American households with traditional television now also subscribe to some form of streaming service like Netflix, so this is great news for television makers that are looking to accelerate the sales of 4K Ultra HD TV models.

It should be noted that the master copies of House of Cards that Netflix received were reportedly only in 4K, but Netflix is having the production house Encore create and store 6K masters as an archive. The 6K archive masters reportedly came in at 5.5TB per episode, compared to 2.5TB for the usual 4K master. Yes, that would be 5.5TB per one-hour episode! Storage costs are a concern for the studios, but we’ll sure they can figure it out and still be profitable! By the time 6K TVs hit the market Netflix wanted to ensure they had some content and we can’t wait for more 4K streaming content and now we can look forward to 6K content down the road!
