Elpida delivers DDR3 SDRAM memory modules to Intel

By

Despite most observers believing that DDR2 will only rise to the mainstream memory in 2006, major memory makers are all gearing up for the launch of DDR3 chips. With double the performance of DDR2 the current DDR3 modules are looking pretty darn good. Too bad DDR2 is only just now starting to catch on!

After announcing the development of DDR3 chips in August, Elpida announced on November 14 that it has started shipping 512MB and 1GB DDR3 DIMMs to Intel and the company stressed that this new generation chip should help deliver twice the system performance of DDR2 architecture. Samsung was the leader among industry players when it introduced its 512Mbit DDR3 chip prototype in February of this year, while Germany-based Infineon Technologies also announced its 512Mbit DDR3 chips during June. However, Samsung has not revealed much more since then and Infineon stated that it will focus on developing higher density DDR3 chips.
