DRAM module makers bidding high to secure DDR2 supply

By

Several DRAM module makers are offering up to 20% higher than spot prices to secure long-term DDR2 supply due to tight supply and expected stronger demand, DRAM makers said. When AMD’s socket AM2 comes out and when Intel’s Conroe ships you better believe that DDR2 sales will take off.

Although DRAM makers are ramping up capacity for DDR2 memory, supply for the segment is not stable, as the memory is produced using 90nm technology and several DRAM makers have yet to complete their learning curves. In addition, some DRAM makers? 8-inch wafer fabs are not yet able to volume produce DDR2-667 while most of the new demand is for the segment, the makers noted. To add pressure to the situation, AMD will roll out its new DDR2-667-supporting platform in the next month or so, while demand for Intel-based systems supporting DDR2-533 and DDR2-667 is expected to rise rapidly, sources said.
