Countdown to AMD’s Radeon Vega Architecture Preview

By

Across several social media platforms, AMD has released a teaser video for the Vega Architecture Preview. The video, titled “After the Uprising,” features a boy walking around hitting a red snare drum along with the beat of the background music. There is a sign by a Somnum Industries at the beginning of the video with a sticker with a fist symbol with the Radeon written below a “BETTERRED” hashtag. The boy walks through a city that appears to be in shambles with signs all around with writing such as “Give the people full control,” “Join the Radeon Rebellion,” and “VR is not just for the 1%.” He makes his way into a warehouse and he sees drums all like his as a smile makes its way onto his face before the screen blacks out into announcing the Vega Architecture Preview.

Some Radeon fans have taken a step back to wait for the Vega release as most recent mainstream Radeon RX series GPUs (Radeon RX 480 for example) have a tough time competing with Nvidia’s current lineup. In AMD’s current Radeon lineup we have the Radeon RX 480 (which is at the top of the RX 400 series) retailing for around $180 USD and up to around $300 compared to Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1080 cards (top of Nvidia’s mainstream graphics cards) which retail for $550 to around $700 USD. Even when comparing the Radeon RX 480 to Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1060 GPU, (compared due to similar price points considering the GTX 1060 retailing at approximately $200-300 USD) we can see that the Radeon RX 480’s clock speeds range from around a base of 1.1GHz to a boosted 1.3GHz whereas Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1060 card’s clock speed has a base of approximately 1.5GHz and a boosted clock of around 1.7GHz. Regardless, AMD has delivered an affordable GPU that performs well enough to run our favorite titles.
