Chip sales rise to record $20.5 billion

Global sales are up, but analysts are concerned that the strong increase will lead to slower growth next year. Global sales of semiconductors rose 10.5 percent to a record $20.5 billion in August from the year-ago period, and increased 2.1 percent from July, the Semiconductor Industry Association said on Monday. The previous record for one-month worldwide chip sales was $20.4 billion in November 2005.

Most analysts and sector specialists expect the global chip market to increase revenue by just less than 10 percent this year from $235 billion in 2005. The number of individual chips produced, which is a better indication for expected demand for electronic devices, was up 24 percent in January to July. SIA said that inventories had indeed risen both at semiconductor manufacturers and electronics manufacturers in recent months, but they “remain in line with requirements for the holiday build season.”
