Chip-enabled ball makes goal-line decisions

No more disputes on the pitch? Yeah, right! But it’s a start.

LONDON ? An RF chip developed in Germany is being tested in Peru as a means to determine goal-line decisions in soccer matches.
The chip-enabled football was developed by sports giant Adidas, software company Cairos Technologies AG and engineers from Germany?s Fraunhofer Institute, according to a European Union R&D Web site. The chip operates by sending an RF signal to up to 12 antennas distributed around a soccer field. These are connected to a computer which then determines the exact location, and presumably orientation, of the RF chip in three dimensions. The chip sends a message to a wrist-worn device which tells the referee if a goal was scored.
