ASUS ROG GeForce RTX 2080 Graphics Card Shown At Gamescom

By

ASUS announced GeForce RTX 2080 Ti and 2080 custom graphics cards overnight after NVIDIA introduced the RTX-20 series of graphics cards. ASUS will be offer RTX 2080 series cards in three series – ROG Strix, ASUS Dual, and ASUS Turbo. Each series meets the needs of different types of gamers with updated designs and new cooling technologies. At 2018 Gamescom we got a chance to visit the ASUS Booth and ran across the ROG STRIX RTX 2080 graphics card that was on display. No one at Gamescom is allowed to show systems running the RTX 2080, so the handful of AIB cards that we have seen are for eyes only.

The ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 2080 (Turing GPI) uses a brand new GPU cooler design that uses axial-tech fans with IP5X dust resistance and the the latest ROG innovations. The size of the fan hub has been reduced to allow for longer blades, and a barrier ring increases structural integrity and downward air pressure through the large heatsink array. This means that more air flows across the fins and noise levels are not increased. This should cool the cards Turing GPU with 2944 CUDA Cores and 8GB of GDDR6 memory nicely.

The image below shows that the ROG STRIX RTX series cards are fairly wide. ASUS has moved the STRIX cards up from a 2.5-slot footprint to an even larger 2.7-slot footprint increase the size of the heatsink. The overall surface area of the cooling array is 20% larger for the STRIX cards compared to the GTX-10 series.

ASUS MaxContact technology on this new cooler allows for 2x more contact with the Turing GPU for better thermal transfer. ASUS claims that all this improved heat dissipation will allow end users to have more overclocking headroom and less noise as the fans will run at lower fan speeds while gaming.

At the end of the card you can see it has two 8-pin PCIe and just below them you can see some white fan headers. The ASUS ROG Stricx RTX 2080 has ASUS FanConnect II that has two hybrid-controlled fan heaaders for optimal system cooling. The length of the card is 300mm, so it’s a decent sized card.

This model is sold under part number ROG-STRIX-RTX2080-O8G-GAMING and can be pre-ordered at Newegg for $869.99 shipped. ASUS said it has the reference cards base clock speed, but is unable to provide the cards boost clock speeds at this point in time.
