ASUS ROG 34-inch Curved G-SYNC Monitor Seen At Computex

By

We have seen curved displays for many years, but it looks like they are actually going to be coming to market here in 2015! Way back in 2008 we showed you an Alienware 43-inch curved seamless display (made by Ostendo) that boasted a massive screen resolution of 2880 x 900 with an aspect ratio of 32:10! The display was bulky (15-inches thick at the middle) due the use of DLP projection and LED backlighting, but the word part is that it cost around $7,000 when it was finally released months later. It’s been nearly a decade and curved HDTV’s and displays are making a comeback.

ASUS announced that they are showing off the ROG 34-inch Curved G-SYNC Monitor at Computex 2015. This monitor features a 3440 x 1440 screen resolution (21:9 aspect ratio) and a pretty thin profile thanks to the IPS panel. The panel has NVIDIA G-Sync technology inside to ensure a lag free gaming experience and that is a good thing as this panel is only 60Hz. Having a 60Hz refresh rate might scare away some people, but it really all depends on the price. We know this monitor will not cost anywhere near $7,000, so at least it is a huge step up from where we were started out at CES 2008 with the first curved gaming display that we saw!

This 34-inch 3800R curved display features wide-viewing angles, a 3440 x 1440 native resolution, and 21:9 aspect ratio. It features NVIDIA G-SYNC display technology to deliver smooth, lag-free visuals. G-SYNC synchronizes the displays refresh rate to the GPU in any GeForce GTX-powered PC to eliminate screen tearing and minimizing display stutter and input lag. This results in sharper, more vibrant images; and more fluid and responsive gameplay. It has extensive connectivity options that include DisplayPort and HDMI.

The refresh rate on this unit is 60Hz. To reach beyond this refresh rate a panel needs to be developed in this aspect ratio and resolution as well as designed to operate at this high refresh rate. Beyond this due to the increased resolution there are bandwidth limitations with the current DP implementation. As the unit support G-SYNC the G-SYNC controller currently can not support the new DP 1.3 specification which would allow for near 4K or 4K+ resolutions at refresh rates higher than 60Hz.
