With the upcoming launch of the Athlon 64 FX-53 processor the price of the Athlon 54 FX-51 will more than likely go down a bit and sales will increase. Since the 940-pin Athlon FX-XX series processors require registered memory you'll soon be shopping for some memory modules that can work with your new processor. OCZ jumped in on the registered memory market back in September when AMD launched their Athlon 64 FX processor. Since then many enthusiasts have been swearing by these modules on their FX system, so we got a pair for testing!
The OCZ modules come paired together after being fully validated on the Asus SK8V motherboard to ensure maximum stability and performance. The modules we have (model #OCZ4001024ELERDC-K) are a pair of 512 MByte, two-bank memory modules that have real copper heat spreaders clamped on.
The modules are rated at DDR400 (400MHz) with timings of 2-3-2-6; 1T, and require 2.6 Volts for operation. The label shows the timings, but we were thrown off by what the label showed. RAS to CAS is usually the 2nd number not the 3rd, so if you set your timings by the label the module will not work. (Just some helpful info!)
The above image shows how the OCZ modules arrived. Included in the package was a really nice case sticker, and the modules. No instructions included, but those shouldn't be needed for plugging in some memory. The OCZ modules are lifetime warrantied, which we will actually use later in the review!
