Making It Look Realistic
Now that it has been determined that ATI has by far the the best framerates when rendering the game in OpenGL mode we can enhance the visual effects by enabling Anti-Aliasing (AA) and Anisotropic Filtering (AF) in the ATI CATALYST Control Center (CCC). Let's take a look at a censored screen shot of the game with everything auto-set in the driver on a fresh install of both the game and the video card drivers.
Looking at the where the wall meets the curtains the straight line of the wall is full of jagged edges. The lamp pole also isn't really straight and has jaggies on it also. If you look closely at Jenna's hair where it meets the white wall and where her elbow meets the brown wood floor it's obvious that she's not 'real' as her body parts shouldn't have jagged corners. The game Virtually Jenna doesn't have any 3D Quality options in the menu, but they can be enabled via the CATALYST Control Center. After enabling 6x AA and 16xAF we went to the same scene in the game and again took a screen shot.
Looking at all the items we mentioned above we notice that all the jagged edges are gone. The lamp pole and wall are now smooth as is her body line and where the hair renders in front of the wall. The most amazing part of this expierement is that it did not lower our frame rate as FRAPS still showed 89FPS when run at 1024x768 with AA and AF set to the max in the ATI CCC.
Since most of the shots in the game are not appropriate for Legit Reviews we'll take a close up of her face as our last example of image quality. Notice most of the jagged edges in this screen shot are along the hair and the edge of the bed sheets.
With AA and AF enabled the jagged edges are no longer present on either her face or the bed sheets.
It should also be mentioned that when we ran Virtually Jenna in Direct3d mode with AA and AF enabled in the ATI drivers that no differences were noted in the game. AA and AF only worked when OpenGL was selected in the options menu of Virtually Jenna before the game was launched. Since NVIDIA was only getting 5FPS in OpenGL mode at 1024x768 enabling eye candy is reserved to those with ATI graphics cards only when it comes to the ThriXXX rendering engine.
