All testing was done on a fresh install of Windows XP Professional build 2600 with Service Pack 2 and DirectX 9.0c. All benchmarks were completed on the desktop with no other software programs running. We left the processor alone and only changed the memory divider during testing. This will look and see if running memory this fast is even worth it as the processor isn't being touched during the review.
The Processor Settings:
We used an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ as the processor and to reach PC2-8000 and PC2-8888 speeds as we had to overclock it. For the testing the OCZ PC2-8800 Gold memory we lowered the multiplier again down to 10 and increased the bus speed to 274MHz in the BIOS for an overall clock frequency of 2.75GHz with 5-6-6-15 timings.
In the overclocking section on the OCZ memory and for the Corsair DOMINATOR PC2-8888C4 modules we lowered the multiplier down to 10 again and increased the bus speed to 278MHz in the BIOS for an overall clock frequency of 2.77GHz with 4-4-4-12 2T timings for all the testing done at PC2-8888 (2.4V for Corsair and 2.55V for OCZ).
Memory Clock Values:
Usually when someone overclocks their processor they lower their memory divider to decrease the clock frequency of the memory. If you buy high dollar memory like this you don't have to lower the divider and we left it at 400MHz for all the benchmarking in this article on the DFI NF590 SLI-M2R motherboard.
