Free Capacity & Final ThoughtsCapacity
The ST1 and ST2 have a free capacity of 3.66GB and 7.30GB respectively. As usual, a small portion of our drives is used for formatting and is therefore unavailable for data storage.Real World Testing
To give you an idea of how fast these drives are, we copied a 1GB zip file onto each drive and recorded how long each took to write.
The ST1, with the slower of the two write speeds, took about 2:25 to copy the file.
The ST2, with almost double the write speed, completed the transfer in just 1:21. Considering that 1GB is a large portion of either of these drives, I’d say sticking to transferring small files on these drives is a good idea.
Final Thoughts & Conclusions:
Although these two drives did not live up to the advertised speeds, these are still two quick little USB 3.0 Flash drives. With a price tag of $9.37 shipped for the Super Talent USB 3.0 Express ST1 4GB (ST3U4ST1K) and $16.07 shipped for the Super Talent USB 3.0 Express ST2 8GB (ST3U8EST2), these aren’t much more expensive than USB 2.0 drives. So, for the extra speed, it might be worth an extra few dollars over a USB 2.0 drive. It also looks like the Super Talent USB 3.0 Express ST2 also performs better and has a longer five year warranty (versus 1-year on the ST1).
I feel that my primary use for these drives would be to move or back up small files, such as music, Word documents, and photos. These drives would be perfect for a college student who requires a small capacity drive to back up class files. With a one year warranty on the ST1 and a five year warranty on the ST2 and quickly rising flash drive speeds, this could be a great drive to grab until the prices of the larger, faster drives fall.
Legit Bottom Line: The Super Talent Express 3.0 ST1 and ST2 drives are both quick low capacity drives, ideal for those who backup small files on a daily basis.
