CiragoTV Platinum Real-World Performance
We found the GUI to be quite useful and functional albeit a bit drab to look at. Everything we wanted was there, but as with other Realtek-based players, the GUI just looked dated and old fashioned. This is in direct contrast to the Apple Computer’s Apple TV or even the Western Digital WD TV Live Hub that have very polished and visually appealing interfaces.

As far as functionality of the CiragoTV Platinum, we have to admit, the player really gets the job done. Not only did it play every one of our media files that we had on hand to test, it handled the Blu-ray ISO file and “passed through” the DTS and Dolbly 7.1 digital sound to our receiver. The Record functions works as well as the input that you give it. Don’t expect pristine quality from your vcr or standard-definition cable box.

The BitTorrent client worked fairly well and we would still be using it if it wasn’t for the fact that there was no way to “secure” your network from prying eyes. Since the client didn’t have any sort of Peer Block program built in, I was a bit hesitant to use the BT client on the CiragoTV CMC3200. For those who have more courage than I (or who live in a country with where all P2P is permissible), the client is a pretty good way to download directly to the device that will play your multimedia.
At almost $300, the 2TB CiragoTV CMC3200 has to be close to extraordinary especially when you match it up against the competition that is on the market today. The picture and video quality of the CMC3200 is very good – even excellent. The fact that we can record from a source and use a BitTorrent client makes the unit even more impressive. The sticker price is the biggest issue here. Without the 2TB hard drive, we are looking at ‘normal’ Realtek-based media player that doesn’t navigate Blu-ray menus.
Legit Bottom Line:
If the CiragoTV Platinum HD Media Player didn’t pack so many features and functions into their 2TB box, then maybe it wouldn’t be so expensive - or attractive. Those looking for a high-quality, versatile recorder that plays all your media with huge on-board storage need to take a close look at the Platinum CMC3200. Those on a budget looking for a bargain need to look elsewhere.
