Conclusion and Final Thoughts
When I looked at the prototype Colossus that BitFenix sent a few weeks back I was impressed with it. I’m still impressed with it, and I still have one of the concerns that I did with the production version as I did with the prototype, its weight.
The Colossus is just that colossus. The case with a full system is over 50lbs -- that’s heavy. The heft is mainly due to the steel construction and the added weight for the coatings and all the lighting. The doors themselves weigh in at about 6.5lbs each, and combined are very close in weight to what some full aluminum mid-towers weigh empty. The case is built solidly, so it should last a long time; I just don’t see it as a LAN rig.
I still dig the case lighting, and I’m normally not one for lighting up a case. BitFenix did a very nice job with the light effect modes. The added ability to choose the color and, more importantly, shut it off, just adds to the flexibility.
The release date for the Colossus was set for mid September, and BitFenix has said it will carry an MSRP of $169. I looked but could not find the Colossus on sale anywhere. In that price range the Colossus is going to be fighting with some already heavy hitters like the Cooler Master HAF-932 and HAF-X, Antec DF-85, and the upcoming Corsair 600T. All have similar features and closeness in price. The big thing the Colossus has going for it is its external looks. The Colossus comes essentially pre-modded with the LED effects and not a plain Jane exterior. This is stuff that some gamers want, but don't have the time, money, tools and skill to cut up a case and have it come out looking good.
Legit Bottom Line: In all, BitFenix's first case is a solidly built and sturdy case, but is a little on the heavy side. The Colossus should do rather well for anyone but the LAN going crowd.
