HD Tach v3.0.4.0

HD Tach is a low level hardware benchmark for random access read/write storage devices such as hard drives, removable drives (ZIP/JAZZ), flash devices, and RAID arrays. HD Tach uses custom device drivers and other low level Windows interfaces to bypass as many layers of software as possible and get as close to the physical performance of the device possible.

Benchmark Results: The Western Digital Scorpio Black 500GB notebook hard drive looks has slightly better performance than the Seagate Momentus 7200.4 hard drive that we looked at last year.  The Western Digital Scorpio Black 500GB was able to reach 87MB/s read and 77MB/s write. The random access time was at 14.9ms with a CPU usage of just 1%.  The burst speed of this SATA II drive was also observed as being a respectable 230MB/s.

Comparison Chart: The Western Digital Scorpio Black 500GB doesn't really compete with enthusiast 3.5" hard drives like the Western Digital VelociRaptor or any of the SSDs in this benchmark. Remember that the Western Digital Scorpio Black 500GB is a traditional 2.5" notebook hard drive and when compared against the competitions offerings it falls right in the midlle. The Seagate Momentus 7200.4 has been noted as one of the best laptop drives on the market just half a year ago, so to see the WD Scorpio Black beating it in every test in HD Tach is a good sign for WD.
